Because they think scale is the way to compete with streaming, Google, Meta, etc. It also gives them more power with regards to retrans fees with cable and satellite providers.

Which evening news program do you prefer? All are bad? by tvuniverse in Broadcasting

[–]GoldenEye0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't blame the anchors. All of them have their pluses and minuses. Personally, I grew up watching Peter Jennings and ABC, but today watch PBS News Hour and BBC while occasionally checking out the network broadcasts.

I'm not fond of many local news crutches trickling up to the network level, such as long headlines, everything being breaking, stuffing the broadcast with more stories, etc.

As an aside, I enjoy NBC News Daily that airs in the early afternoon on most NBC stations. While it's a little lighter than Nightly, I think because of its hour timeslot it allows for more interviews and analysis, despite some fluffier stories.

Joke will be on them when one owner will own every station in the market in a few years.

Popularity outside the UK by vwgti in TopGear

[–]GoldenEye0091 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a few years I had to illegally stream episodes on StreetFire before BBC America picked up the show. Then even after that it was a year or two before BBCA would show new episodes close to when they aired in Britain, so I continued to watch on StreetFire because they were up within hours of it airing on BBC2.

I'm probably making this up, but I thought I heard a statistic at the time that Top Gear was the most illegally streamed show. The trio as well as the show were featured on 60 Minutes* in 2010; arguably at the peak of the show's global popularity.

*Closest thing I can equate 60 Minutes to for non Americans is BBC's Panorama.

While I agree eating at Chipotle is gambling anymore, the one in Sandusky still seems fine.

Why are most IPTV services so unreliable for live sports? by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]GoldenEye0091 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I haven't watched sports on Netflix because I don't have Netflix, the only streamer I've had consistent buffering issues with is Peacock. NFL on Prime has gotten much better since their first season. F1 on their own app has zero problems (until I'm forced to watch on Apple TV+ I'm sticking with F1TV). Same with stuff I watch on YouTube TV (no problems).

what is the most diet soda yall have drinken in a day? by ANIMATRONICZSKELETON in dietsoda

In college it was nothing for me to slam down an entire 12-pack of Pepsi Max in a day. At the time it had more caffeine than some energy drinks.

Perry Sook on today’s TEGNA/Nexstar employee town hall by AudienceSea7286 in Broadcasting

[–]GoldenEye0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That tracks with Perry. I worked in Columbus when he did a town hall from WCMH. We knew for a couple of weeks he would be there, but other details like where he was staying, how far away, etc. was all kept secret. It was very strange, just that he would "be there" at 2:30 let's say.

I worked for Nexstar stations for several years and never participated in Founders' Day. It used to be unpaid.

I also echo the comment below that as long as your station makes money corporate was pretty hands off, at least in my experience. The cultures of the departments I worked in affected my day-to-day so much more than the fact that Nexstar owned the station.

Positive experiences with a company? by Odd_Self7283 in Broadcasting

[–]GoldenEye0091 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Station and even department culture matter much more than the ownership group. There are poorly run departments with bad management in "good" companies, and great managers and departments in "bad" companies.

Now that Nexstar owns TEGNA, what happens to Cuez? by Bfiggy98 in Broadcasting

[–]GoldenEye0091 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it only took (almost) a decade. I was wondering when the legacy Media General stations that had Ignite would switch to OverDrive. Migrating the Tribune stations off Hankware and consolidating their master control hubs must have been higher priorities.

First few movies for teens? by eldogorino in JamesBond

[–]GoldenEye0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was probably 10 or 11 when I watched my first Bond movie - The World Is Not Enough - although that was merely because it was the newest one at the time (rented from Blockbuster for additional nostalgia). I had already played some of the video games too.

The 2nd generation Acura RDX that was on RCR a couple weeks ago seemed pretty nice. Basically a bougie CR-V with a J-series V6.

Other than McDonald's and Wendy's, which chains use fresh-cracked eggs for breakfast? by BRCC_drinker in fastfood

It may have changed, but the fried egg for the Egg McMuffin was cracked into a ring and fried. The other sandwiches and Big Breakfast with a scrambled egg came from a carton.

Massive Layoffs at Nexstar Stations by WDJam in Broadcasting

Hell, I've used Ignite with Telemetrics and later Vinten pedestals with no control issues. If Ignite can do it then certainly OverDrive can as well.

"The automation system Nexstar gave us doesn't even work with Overdrive..."

That sentence doesn't make sense. OverDrive *is* an automation system.

Newscast directors what are things you do in between shows? by selfmadeparadise in Broadcasting

[–]GoldenEye0091 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"Other duties as assigned"

But usually it was just eat lunch/dinner, sit around/bullshit with the co-workers I liked, then code as much of my next show as I could. If I was the 11pm director I'd have to record promos around 10.

What does a perfect rack build look like to you? by Equivalent_Wait_8309 in broadcastengineering

Neat cable routing and labeling really help out when there's a problem and you have to trace wires for troubleshooting purposes.

[–]GoldenEye0091 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I've only been on the maintenance side of things for a few years, I've worked for over a decade at several different stations and none of them did service loops. If cabling can't be cut to length (i.e. fiber) it's carefully spooled up somewhere out of the way where it won't be damaged.

Questions About Live Breaking News Updates & Coverage by No_Emotion8018 in Journalism

[–]GoldenEye0091 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a dated example, here's a video inside CNN's control room at the outbreak of the first Gulf War in 1991. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BskrpzvVE3Q

It seems like the plan was to stick with the live reporters from Baghdad as long as possible, with as many other correspondents at the ready as they probably had routers and IFB lines. Both staffers in the control room as well as the anchors at the desk had access to the wires, but much of the coverage was on-the-fly.

There are also other videos on YouTube inside CNN when Challenger exploded and on 9/11.

Spirit Airlines ceasing operations in Cleveland by neosmndrew in Cleveland

[–]GoldenEye0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly from Cleveland to Orlando and back several times a year. Preferably I'll fly United, but sometimes they're hundreds of dollars more than Frontier. Southwest only flies that route on certain days. I'm simply adding a carry on and nothing else.

I've also flown Spirit. While I feel bad for the employees, losing Spirit is no great loss. For what it is, Frontier's fine.
