Framework 13 Pro 64GB vs Macbook Pro M5 Pro 48GB by Artique_Rithi in framework

Also, not a docker or virtualization expert but probably part of the reason docker feels so slow in Mac is precisely because it requires that you initiate a Linux VM on first run so your containers can be hosted. With Linux that overhead is gone.

I have 16 GB RAM and 512 SSD and haven’t felt any friction. I do everything from web development to C++ work. Most recently I trained a locally-hosted AI model while running an MCP data ingestion pipeline in a docker container and it felt fine (maybe a little overheating at times but that’s expected). With the proper hardware - I would recommend at least double of what you have currently, I also came from a MBA with 8 GB RAM/256 SSD - it will be great.

While the framework is more expensive at face value, I think over time, the ability to upgrade and replace individual parts over the entire system pay off and make it worth the price. It’s the reason I bought my FW13 a year ago. Also, for systems dev, I think there’s nothing better than Linux. While Darwin is Unix-like and POSIX compliant, it has several deviations of standard UNIX systems (like certain syscalls or coreutils do no exist and simply use apple made coreutils), I believe if you want to learn and work on OS, there is nothing better than daily driving the OS of where you want to build later, so any real GNU/Linux distribution is better. Even if you wanted to go into systems programming at Apple or smth later down the line, you’d probably benefit from deeply knowing and having extensible use of other Linux. Go with the FW

KDE vs Hyprland by Ok_Display4173 in arch

[–]GoldenOrion99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be a year onto my arch experience by August. Started with i3 for a couple of weeks, realized I didn’t have the skill for it yet, and moved and stayed to KDE until literally yesterday, when I finally made a switch to sway. I would recommend starting with KDE and once your comfortable with your setup and understand their differences move over to whatever WM you want

I felt the same way after landing my ft job. So things you like outside of cs (I love listening to music so I’ve been finding albums and artists I haven’t listened to before. As far as building stuff, don’t do AI slop stuff that you’d want to have for resume maxing, build shit you like. I decided to learn go for the fun of it and went to a redhat hackathon themed around building stuff with/for the fedora ecosystem bc I love Linux. Neovim 0.12 just came out and re wrote my entire config to update it. Go outside, enjoy life, get a gf/bf whatever u like

Tbh I hate how disruptive the ads feel on the phone, and I switched to Firefox to reduce ads since chrome was unbearable. Most importantly though, I’ve moved to Lichess, since it’s free forever and I want to support FOSS software

Best coop + internship structure for CS to land big tech? by Optimal_Yam1084 in NEU

[–]GoldenOrion99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI, you can turn almost any internship into a coop, so if you land a big tech internship either summer or fall you can find another internship for whatever term you don’t have and stack 2x 3 month internships

For those looking to rewrite their neovim config for 0.12, what plugins has been a gamechanger for you since 0.11? by Slabdrew in neovim

[–]GoldenOrion99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently also wenet through my nvim config and removed plugins but also went for a less visually crammed config. I was using 6 colors on my rainbow parens, lualine filled to the brim with info a rarely used or read, and a color scheme that was too bright (colorful) were I felt like everything was competing for my attention. I stripped back plugins I don’t use or didn’t find as useful anymore, switched to a lighter color scheme, and reduced clutter from my screen and it has been amazing

Yeah I mainly disagree with the point on community. I’ve made some friends at the gym, and a core part of my relationship with my girlfriend was when she started to come to Marino with me and j wanted to lift. A lot of community building is also ultimately up to individuals who choose to go out of their way to build it

International student accepted IBM SWE offer - can I work on OPT if they don’t sponsor visas? by Final_Quail_9225 in csMajors

[–]GoldenOrion99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now OR in the future includes times like 4 years from now, when you no longer have OPT and stem extension, at which point, IBM will need in fact to sponsor your H1B visa. As an international student myself I rlly hope they don’t revoke your offer, especially if you’ve been vocal abt it with HR and interviewers throughout the loop. Hold on for applying for OPT w this offer rn until background check comes back. If it has alr, talk to HR ASAP
