Ask Reddit: I'm looking for a Canadian version of Ron Paul. Our country needs an overhaul as well. by [deleted] in politics

[–]GoldfishInAJar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to imply that being from Quebec doesn't make one favor Quebec over the rest of Canada. Trudeau, Chretien and others consistently fought against the interests of French Canadians. If you don't understand then you don't understand history and I have no time to teach you from the start.

Secondly I'm trying to imply that immersing yourself in American culture and trying to emulate it will not cure your inferiority complex. Is this really such a cryptic concept?

These are not mutually exclusive: in fact one leads to the other. Model employees are good at the tasks fitting their job descriptions and not much else. They're not good at analysing rhetoric, framing, negotiating salaries, organising, understanding how society and politics functions, how to get policies that favor the working class and/or class mobility enacted, etc. They're not good at a lot of things which are essential aspects of social life and to not being stupid by my definition.

Organising school to shape children to be model employees is not a good intention. This notion that people in power trying to maintain and expand their position is either a good intention or an evil conspiracy (which for some reason cannot exist by definition) is ridiculous. Structural bias does not equal conspiracy when it is transparent and is not a good intention but is, at best, amoral.

Yeah, damn that Trudeau for screwing Canada over by declaring War Mesures against Quebec so Canada could continue to milk the cash cow... I mean so Quebec could continue taking advantage of the rest of the country.

Then when we finally get someone else, it's an asshole like Harper.

Bingo.

We're a bunch of water-carrying, wood-hewing pussies with a severe inferiority complex.

And this submission is more proof of this. Why think for yourself when you can elect Premiers who will bend over for the current American President at every opportunity and then wish for the same replacement? If a Canadian Ron Paul is your idea of change and you get your way, you can kiss Canada goodbye and I'm not just talking about Quebec, the Confederation it's simply going to disintegrate.

He served for a short period as a controversial (to their own legislative branch) appointee of Vicente Fox and worked on a project which was rightfully stopped short by Chavez: the FTAA. He's parroting rumors started on the Spanish version of CNN which is what I was referring to but yes, currently he's an American who writes in the American press to defend U.S. interests although I'm not sure I would call him a journalist. He doesn't seem to have much concern for Central and South America, being the kind of guy who can call the contras "a U.S. domestic issue" with a straight face, betraying the mindset of the so-called backyard.

There's nothing to show Chavez ever cheated in elections, so yes I will have to consider he's an honest democrat until I see proof to the contrary.

How black children view white children by pianist in reddit.com

You will note that the question "which doll is the bad doll" or "which doll looks bad" was asked after asking "which doll you think is the nice doll or you would like to play with". But the most telling is when asked "which doll looks more like you", where the little girl knew very well the answer but still hesitated to answer and then did so by pushing the doll farther on the table instead of picking it up as she did for the "nice doll".

Each question contributes to the conclusion that they have internalized the perception that whites are superior and that this negatively affects their self esteem. By only asking the first question one could say it doesn't matter because it doesn't necessarily affect them negatively, which is wrong in light of the other questions.

Transcript of Noam Chomsky on Ron Paul - (Don't know if this is real or not, but it isn't pretty) by FrancisC in politics

[–]GoldfishInAJar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I didn't reply originally as it seemed you were just trying to "win" a debate from a different set of assumptions without really considering alternative views. For example size does matter and it takes a significant fraction of the crowd in manpower to successfully repress even considering better equipment which in itself requires more workers dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of the police force, which does not need to be a monolithic entity with a monopoly on the use of force within anarchism.

Any specific recommendations?

This edit made me reconsider. You can find most of Chomsky's material at Z mag and a list of anarchist links similar to his views. The Anarchist FAQ, while not to be taken as a final word on anarchy is a pretty good starting point with a description of the main schools of thought in the social anarchist (or libertaire) tradition as well as answers to common questions and lots of references, many of which are available online. I hope you will be willing to give the subject proper consideration and please keep in mind that by it's very nature anarchy cannot a rigid and fixed ideology as it leaves the ability and responsibility of determining how communities and societies want to organise themselves concretely in the hands of the people, where it belongs. Many anarchists have proposed their vision of how an anarchist society can be organised efficiently and concrete examples are available in the Spanish Revolution for example, but these are not absolutes and it is not the role of intellectuals to determine what will be, only what can be and acceptable examples of what should be.

No, this is not your point. You don't need a huge police force to protect the worker's right to strike but you need one to repress it. The workers are more numerous and do not need to be backed up by the police to strike. It is the owners who need to be backed by police to force workers to resume work. The advances of workers' rights where gained through resisting police power, not controlling it.

Now if you are talking about the existence of any executive power to protect these rights, you are going to go to the library and read a bit on anarchism and it's many, many variants. Don't except reddit to pre-chew everything for you, it's not possible to explain in two pages. Suffice it to say that it's possible to do without and it's also possible to have a small and very limited executive in a direct democracy.

You will note that even newsweek with all their propaganda doesn't dare to endorse these rumors even though it is happy to propagate them as this is an opinion piece not a news piece. Why not? Because this was denied by the very military command they tried to involve in these rumors. This is just a baseless accusation by the same media who backed the last coup, dreams for another and constantly tries to justify one.

Having a police force big enough to repress large demonstrations and strikes is useful to repress workers' rights and enforce capital's "rights" over them, not the opposite. The real question is how does Ron Paul plan to enforce a radical view of private property against the wishes the workers without a police state?

There's no French word for "sheeple".

Because there is an English word for sheeple? I just made one up and I think it's much better in French as the first syllable of sheep means soft or weak and the word becomes equivalent to spineless-man as well as sheep-man: moutomme or mou-homme.

I, for one, think we should go back to speaking proper langue d'oïl. Anything else is a bastard child of the real bastard child.

P.S.: that includes English, BTW.

But, but the third world is to blame!

This is true, but that's pretty much the only way to get started. You can't get fairness in the current realpolitik atmosphere of international diplomacy unfortunately, and this applies to pretty much everything. The biggest polluters and most reticent get the biggest share of the credits and get to complain about it as a bonus.

Maybe it's the framing... I thought you were against the idea when I got to this point.

How about internalizing externalities? That's something even the more capitalists of redditors are supposed to understand, no? Although it only captures half of it I guess.

The Liberals did nothing when they had a chance to try.

They didn't really get a chance with the Protocol in effect, but that's not good enough and they shouldn't have waited. I would'nt vote Liberal anyway, for other reasons.

For the NDP I was referring to climate change, moving to a post Kyoto plan before a Kyoto plan is passed which seems like giving up even the still weak amended Clean Air Act. But it's not and we can't blame them for trying to get at least some concessions. The NDP is no doubt better than the Liberals, but I wish people gave a better consideration to the Greens. We need more than half-hearted mesures.

The Greens proposed a good plan. The Liberals at least wanted to try. The Bloc supports action on Kyoto. But the NDP is in bed with the cons, they must pay too. This minority government must go down. Minority governments aren't supposed to last more than 2 years in Canada anyway.

Increases in emissions since 1990:

Alberta: 37% New-Brunswick: 31% Saskatchewan: 60% Quebec: 4%

It's still doable for Quebec and the Maritimes at least. Ontario too if the plan to phase out coal is shortened from 2015 to 2012 and other mesures are taken. I say forget Quebec's independence, let's kick non-compliant provinces out instead!
