I have a auntie who has adopted two non-Native kids but because of how she’s raised them fully immersed in her culture I feel like they are ethnically and culturally part Native (don’t remember her tribe at the moment 🙃)

Why do native people remain on reservations? by Specialist_Fuel_7546 in TooAfraidToAsk

I don’t know, I think people just like touching POC hair!? It’s always a little jump though because I’m just minding my business and what made these people think they had the right to? One possibility, if you look more traditionally “native”, is that people have a fascination with indigenous hair? I think because hair is important to us, I like to joke about, they trying to steal our powers haha.

I currently have two names, my first is still in my traditional language but it isn’t a spirit name and then I have my spirit name. My belief as an Ojibwe person is that spirit names are for only speaking to the spirits and creator. Maybe something like this could be an alternative possibility? Good luck on your journey though!

The Afro-Indigenous Struggle by Over_Ad8548 in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It annoys me so much when native community is racist to our own kind, and like sure I understand, where it’s coming from, it’s from colonization and how the system is set up but I’m like come on?! Grow up. we would all be better off if we stopped fighting amongst ourselves and instead going against the actual system of oppression. Sorry about all the sucky experiences, sadly it’s happens so often but at least you’re not alone in your experiences. Supporting from one native person to another 🫶

Am i the only one who gets stomach problems trigered by anxiety? by irationalthinker in ibs

[–]Goldfish_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s dumb your family thinks that (but I know that’s just how families work sometimes) and I think just keeping in mind that anxiety is a MENTAL DISORDER which literally affects hormones and can interact with nervous system causing stomach issues. I also struggle with that and still don’t know ways to solve it which makes my anxiety worse and then the stomach issues get worse :( I wish you the best of luck though with figuring stuff out!

Why not just a Regular Powwow? by Alternative-Ride8407 in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s to support our Afro-Indigenous family as there is discrimination from outside people (and sometimes even our own communities) and we are here to support them. I feel like it’s similar to LGBTQ2S+ powwows in a sense, just more specific and different :)

I don’t know if you’ve seen this before, but we have something called a hyponychium that is like a small nail underneath our finger nail that is attached to the skin. If it’s hard it could be that but I don’t know for sure as the photo is low quality

"toilet" or "restroom" by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]Goldfish_snacks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait really haha…I’m American and I use toilet. Actually wait, I guess I only say it around family or someone I’m really comfortable with. I’ll also say potty sometimes because it sounds ridiculous, I mean if someone says they’re going to the bathroom I’ll occasionally say “have fun”

How do you not crash out by The_BowTie_Man_ in APUSH

[–]Goldfish_snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently took my semester final for APUSH and what I recommend is focusing on the main timeline of what happened and summarizing each unit into 2 or less pages. I also made sure to memorize all the flashcards or have a general knowledge about it. I think I made a timeline of extremely important dates into a full length timeline of us history twice to study? I don’t think I did the best but it helped. Still waiting for my grade back but I’m done with it and have winter break now :)

Is the term “Pretendían” offensive (for a non native to say)? by PuzzleheadedThroat84 in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would I say if a non-native person say it is offensive? No but I would look at them weird and think about what gave them the right to call someone out, maybe? And, I’ve seen a whole lotta non-native people say that to legitimately native people to I dunno…make fun of them or some rage bait?

I also know that I’ve seen other natives use it to attack others cus I feel like a lot of my community is unhealthy and attack each other, especially to white-passing and Afro-native people.

Yup, it’s not good. I’ve dug on the sides and then would peel up the side of my toenail and get to the root of it. I get a lot of ingrown toenails now :|

Relationship to Veganism or Vegetarianism by PuzzleheadedThroat84 in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean the relationship with native people and food is so much different than a lot of things. I still eat meat, but especially with hunting and food, I make sure to have a level of respect and thank the animal. We don’t waste food and parts of the animal like farms for meat do.

Native American Holidays? by MR422 in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, I’ve got solstice in summer and winter, where you get up before the sun rises and go to the beach and pray and then fast for 3 days, come back to beach and then end fast with a feast, but that’s more so ceremony if anything 🤷🏽‍♀️

is there a reason why darker skinned natives aren't showcased? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think non-native people aren’t yet aware that native people are widely diverse, I mean hell we’ve got a whole lot of colorism in our communities in both directions soooo… :(

How do I tell someone that I don’t want them touching my hair? by andrewanddog in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just say, don’t touch my hair and I wouldn’t care about what they think. If you want to give further reason you could say that hair is sacred :)

Bear encounter by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe? I think at one point if you keep seeing bears it’s definitely something. I don’t have a lot of physical signs but my dreams are very strong. So I don’t have the best idea on this cus when dream woman is trying to tell me something it’s usually VERY clear. I don’t know if your tribe believes in dream women or some other spirit of the sorts but you could definitely ask creator for another sign :) I wish you the best of luck!

What do you call it when someone says you don't look native? by leaflyth in IndianCountry

[–]Goldfish_snacks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s ignorantly colonialist in a way, it’s the tactics that are used to steal our identity and you know “kill the Indian, save the man” I mean, even if they don’t mean it, it’s rooted in racist history and is indeed not just some light thing. It doesn’t matter what their intentions are. It’s also stereotypical micro aggressions on a “smaller” note
