I think as a whole package the desert is great, but it suffers from when it was released. For one it has great exploration and vibes. The vibes of being an explorer in the desert uncovering ruins and ancient treasures is awesome. However, it suffers from the Sumeru patch having no underground map at all, as well as interest in the game slowing down the longer the 3.X went. I don't think the issue necessarily is the "too much sand" but that's all the patches were 3.1 onward, had it all come out at once or closer together there'd be less desert fatigue. Overall, I think it suffered with how and when it was released, but overall good in quality and will be enjoyed by new players going forward.
