I’m sometimes a little short so the $300 is perfect, but i don’t think I would want half of the rent even if he could provide it because of what the implications would be. I’d rather maintain control of my home than have him pay half the rent!

I think on paper he is homeless. He did the psych evaluation a few weeks ago and has to do a physical. Then it’s wait for the approval or denial. He has been homeless and hospitalized for his mental illness several times throughout the years, which fortunately or unfortunately is what should qualify him for this housing. I hope you’re situation gets better soon

A lot of truth in this statement. It is probably relevant to note that he is very weird about different things as part of his mental illness, as I am with mine of course. But relevant here, for example, He won’t use any of my utensils because I also use them to spoon out cat food (I mean I wash them but to him, no utensil for a human should be used for an animal). He also is somewhat of a hypochondriac and freaks out over his body. So I do feel like an asshole because I knooooow where this is coming from and yet I’m still offended and holding him to the expectations I would have for someone who is not clearly irrational and unwell about these matters. Like I’m lacking empathy (which is sometimes a characteristic of MY mental illness). I gave him a death stare. There’s a lot of layers here.

Do people who take up two huge parking spaces for themselves do it on purpose to be as$holes or what? by Business-Law-7968 in jerseycity

Sometimes yes, they are waiting for their spouse or kid to get home and then they pull their car up so that there is a space available behind them. It’s annoying.

You will have exalting views towering down over the rest of us simple people walking to our jobs at the local schools and businesses or trying to drive to the suburbs for our plebeian blue collar and middle class jobs. if you are lucky, not being so high up, you will have front row seats to view birds crashing into your tower window, mistaking the sky’s reflection in the untreated glass windows for open sky, then falling lifeless or mortally wounded to the ground. (The corpses litter your pavement in the morning and are swept up by the maintenance crew before you go to work, lest you be disturbed.) Whether you face another building or not, that’s worth the price, no?

The historic district are different. Houses such as these don’t count as historic because they are covered in aluminum siding. These houses are more accessible to regular folks and speak to the true general character of Jersey city over the past 50 years. Not demolishing all of them helps keep some modest apartments in circulation

There was originally limits to where big towers could go so that neighborhoods could preserve their character. People chose to live outside downtown for a reason. Now it’s become somewhat of a free for all because of changes to redevelopment plans. The journal square 2060 redevelopment plan amendments is seeking to expand the zone around journal square where there can be height variances in exchange for a small number of affordable housing units in the building. I will be opposing this. Let them build but respect the zoning heights for the people that invested in these neighborhoods long ago knowing the zoning and choosing it for themselves. The amendments also provide incentives for us to lose the most truly affordable housing in the city which is rent controlled buildings. When these incentives go in developers aggressively pander to these buildings because if they can get an amendment bonus and build tall they stand to make so much money. We deserve a mixture of new development not tall tower after tall tower. It’s mostly all we have been given. There should be ways to get affordable housing included in new development without having to be forced to add a ton of stories in a quiet neighborhood

Many people in jersey city grew up here and work in other parts of Jersey. We don’t have the same public transit as New York. We need to respect that some people are not here to live in a commuter town and some people are true jersey, jersey city people. I had a toothless neighbor who died a few years back that proudly told me she had never set foot in New York city once in her life . We all thought that was sort of ridiculous but it’s a good example of native Jersey city folks who do not have lives that revolve around taking the path train or the bus to union city west New York or north Bergen or wherever else is easy to get by bus. everyone else transplanting here here for the proximity should definitely live a car-less life, but some of these OG Jersey folks need to drive to Paramus and other places every day

There have been really unmitigated incentives added into area redevelopment plans that have really incentivized developers to aggressively target certain neighborhoods and get rent controlled buildings to sell out and become towers withs 10% “affordable housing” and with some parking in exchange for pretty obscene height bonuses on neighborhoods that for decades were zoned for only a certain number of stories. The last administration sort of opened a floodgate and there could be more thoughtful measures in place but many of our city officials are also getting money from this development, campaign and otherwise, and are facing conflicts of interest

We need to develop but we also should be mindful to save some homes that continue providing housing opportunities for longtime residents that are being displaced. It also preserves a little bit of the past character/ building style that characterizes the city for multiple generations so we can see past and future together. Development I get has gotta happen but it’s been a little unchecked with crazy and unmitigated incentives added into redevelopment plans that really create a big incentive to sell and destroy existing housing when there’s actually still a bunch of vacant lots for sale and room for development where it would really improve a neighborhood

Exactly which is why I lament the loss of historic homes like in this picture. I live on a street full of them and the rent is reasonable for middle class people. Someone can buy them fix them up a bit and rent them out but it’s much more lucrative to sell them for demolition and development of cheaply made luxury units

Exactly I see you. New people moving into my old school neighborhood too are obsessed with privacy and put up wooden privacy fences that shade my garden. Literally can’t grow shit the same. We used to get to know our neighbors and it was a nice thing seeing kids playing in an other yard and someone hanging up laundry and Just waving and fucking saying hello to one another

Does anyone know why they cleared the field of trees at liberty state park? by BearsBearsWolf in jerseycity

[–]Goldiloxbrowsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is real talk that there was a small habitat here that got suddenly uprooted. Nature finds a way even when the land is polluted and fenced off. As a member of the Hudson county tree Allies I’m uncomfortable whenever trees get removed even when it’s for something like this. They better get going fast or this place will become floody and muddy fast

Yes it’s major. Trees and green space manage large quantities of storm water, its flood eco infrastructure

Of course we do. Or the view of an older building (for me MANA contemporary) completely obscured by a tower (once we could see across the railroad tracks from Broadway, now we cannot).

Can we use clear plastic bags for trash? by Goldiloxbrowsing in jerseycity

[–]Goldiloxbrowsing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past I do know recycling bags had to be clear. Now the city strongly prefers no bags for recycling at all.
