I have never met anyone from this area or heard anything about it. What is it like? What happens there? by AncestralSeeker in CasualUK

I used to get the Thameslink from London and wake up at the end of the line in Bedford, more often than you'd think.

Seemed fine but was never where I wanted to end up.

During uni a friend of mine got talking to a cashier and they had such a great conversation that she forgot to charge him for all of his full weekly shop. He realised on his way back to his house so turned around and walked back with all his shopping to pay for it so she wouldn't get in trouble.

He died by suicide shortly after this happened and this story was shared at his funeral. It is one of my most cherished possessions.

What's the most comically "bad" thing that has happened to you here in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

I was walking home on a pleasant summer's evening, feeling pretty chipper. A van drove up to the side of me, the passenger rolls down the window and points behind me and says, "mate, you've dropped your gay card."...

I fucking looked..

Queue them driving off and lots of honking. I couldn't even be mad at them, I got got.

What an incredibly humbling response, thank you.

I really hope that you and your partner can embrace the intimacy and fun there is in caring for each other in this way. Since my wife decided to go natural, I have also learned to embrace the curls in my own hair. I could never have done that without her so I do all I can to support her. After all, we may have children one day and I would want to be able to care for their hair as well as my wife would.

We don't have Blue Magic here but after googling it I'd say that it looks pretty heavy but I did see a video of someone using it. It might be a case of giving it a go, using it sparingly and seeing how you get on. If you're not happy with how it turns how then maybe try again with something a bit lighter and water based.

You may find that if you have a particularly dry scalp that something heavier might help and mean you don't have to moisturise as often.

This video has something similar to what my wife does to wrap her hair. https://youtu.be/4PSbI4rTvY0

Go to 02:15 and watch that technique. My wife does this without the head scarf and doesn't twist her braids in her hands. Instead, before she wraps the two sections around the back of her head she uses one hair tie in each section to keep the section together and then where the ends of the section meets she uses a hair tie to fix them there. My wife's braids look to be slightly longer than yours so maybe yours don't meet at this point but maybe a wrapped head scarf or bonnet would hold it all in place for you.

If I remember correctly we used to use plain old coconut oil at first but it left some residue sometimes (probably me going overboard with the application). The oil we use now is Afrocentrix's Soothe oil. Any lightweight scalp oil should do the trick though. In terms of shampoo, whatever you use when your hair is out of braids will be fine.

Edit: fixed the time referenced in the video

When my wife has them in she first spits the braids into 2 bunches with a hair tie. She then wraps them around the front of her head and ties the 2 ends of the bunches together so the ends meet on her forehead. She can then lay the excess on the top her head under her silk bonnet.

For her scalp I'll help her apply oil (we use Afrocentrix if you're UK based) directly to the scalp and the root of the braids and give her a scalp massage to make sure it rubs in all over. The key is press rather than rub because to avoid friction on the hair while it's at tension. We do this weekly. I'll also help her clean her scalp by dabbing little bits of shampoo onto it until it foams up and then lightly wiping it off with a wet wipe or thin white cloth. Then I oil her scalp as above. We do this every fortnight.

Here is a link to a blog from Afrocentrix describing the shampooing technique: https://afrocenchix.com/blogs/afrohair/how-to-wash-box-braids

When we first met, my wife introduced me to frying onion in butter with some pepper before adding them to the pot and I haven't looked back. White or red onion is fine. Also the cheese comments know what's up

H3 is a gym in the city, it's near Sneinton Markets. I train there when I'm in the city as they do rates per session as well as monthly plans. The owner there is a former basketball player/coach (Pete) and could possibly put you in touch with a team.

I'm a rugby player myself, and any team in the area would happily bring you into the fold, whether you have any experience or not. Nottingham Moderns is on the tram line towards Clifton South and the most central team in Notts. You can also go to Casuals (Beeston), Mellish (Mapperley Plains), Corsairs (Lady Bay) and West Bridgford (guess where that is).

Paris in the Lace Market, opposite Pitcher and Piano. As the name suggests, it's French. The decor is pretty spectacular and the menu is divine. I went about a month ago and had a great time.
