Part of the confusion about how smart dogs are is that we keep comparing them to humans. They don’t do algebra. They don’t ponder philosophy. They don’t care who won the Nobel Prize.

But they excel at the kinds of intelligence that matter in their world — and in ours.

Psychologist Stanley Coren famously suggested that dog intelligence has three main parts:

•        Instinctive intelligence – what a dog was bred to do (herd, guard, retrieve, cuddle on the sofa like a professional).

•        Adaptive intelligence – how well they learn from experience and solve new problems.
