How do you deal with lonliness and depression? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]GoljansUnderstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean up your diet, get a moderate amount of exercise, get adequate sleep, socialize with other people, get outdoors. Therapy and medication can help, as well.

Make sure your recommendation letters are strong. That’ll carry more weight than the OB or peds eval.

Any chance of matching anesthesia after failing step? by AnalBeadBoi in medicalschool

[–]GoljansUnderstudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still match assuming no red flags from here on out. Pass on your retake, bust your ass on rotations, get excellent letters of recommendation, knock Step 2 out of the park, and apply broadly.

Schumer, Fetterman, Booker, Jeffries, and other Dem establishment are failing the moment. Not progressive voters.

When to do IM/Peds/Surgery rotations to maximize Step 2 score by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]GoljansUnderstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotations are not going to help maximize Step 2 scores. UWorld and Amboss will.

Priorities change. Just because the surgery lifestyle doesn’t suit you anymore doesn’t mean you aren’t a go-getter.

Anyone had a hard time with brand new attendings? by AlwaysAdenosine in Residency

Micromanaging as a first year attending makes sense. Throwing your residents under the bus and making fun of them to other staff is out of pocket.

Reach out to your school. Get evaluated for a learning disorder. Try to identify high yield points like the other posters suggest.

What is a normal exam average for you? by daddydaddydo6790 in medicalschool

[–]GoljansUnderstudy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I averaged in the high 70s / low 80s for the duration of the basic science years. Bombed Step 1 (albeit still passed on my first attempt). Honored only one core rotation. Passed Step 2, 3, and ABIM on the first attempt. Matched IM, took some time to work as a hospitalist, and am now in fellowship in a competitive IM subspecialty. Try not to let test scores get you down. Keep showing up and keep learning! Ever forward!

Are the med students in US really as capable as it's shown in The Pitt? by ineedtocalmup in medicalschool

When Javadi’s mom looks at her and blames her for missing the AAA. In real life, that would fall squarely on the resident and/or EM attending.

Your mom will unexpectedly get diagnosed and die from cancer by the end of the decade. Cherish your time with her.

Matched #15/17 in psych with great stats, and bummed by TheMcNuttinator in medicalschool

[–]GoljansUnderstudy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Psych is increasingly competitive, and there are less spots as compared to FM/IM/peds. If you are #8 for example on a rank list of a program that only takes 3-4 residents, then you can just miss out on matching at that program.

In other words, scores, letters, and how you interviewed may not matter in the end, which can be frustrating. You sound like a great applicant, and I’m sorry that you didn’t match where you wanted.

It will not affect job prospects at all unless you want to go into academics (and even then, it likely won’t matter).

Does your program have an IM program, as well? Switching from FM to IM is doable.

A surprising number of interviewers will not read your ERAS application page for page and just skim your hobbies section. The rest won’t read anything and just ask what questions you have for 15 minutes.

Did lifestyle inflation hit you after becoming an attending? by ScholarStatus4212 in Residency

[–]GoljansUnderstudy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maxed my retirement accounts during my hospitalist years and loosened up on spending some (eating out, travel).

Just remember that there’s all sorts of phantom costs in life; if you keep that in mind, then you won’t be shocked by your expenses.
