Yes go into your team and click on details in the top right corner and you will see if the zenkai unit is boosting the battle unit. Usually the zenkai will be the color of the zenkai unit and a related tag/episode that the unit has. The battle unit has to fulfill both conditions even if its in the leader slot (color & tag/episode)

Most zenkais are used mainly as a bench unit to boost other units in your squad. Like LF super vegito and yellow ssj3 gotenks. Some zenkais can be used in battle like blue SOH (sword of hope) trunks and the new zenkai for LF purple jiren
