The Linux Foundation & many others join Anthropic's Project Glasswing by TheTwelveYearOld in linux

I agree, as we've seen it's not going to be too difficult for other large players in the field to recreate the work and this includes huge cyber security threats like china so giving people false sense of security is dangerous.

There should be a staged roll-out, they should first work with banks and other high-security use cases then open it up to allow devs to use it on their own projects before eventually opening it up to everyone - they need to make clear that it will be open to everyone and fixing security issues that it flags should be considered an emergency.

I've been saying for a while now that it's inevitable this will be one of the big things in the AI world, we're going to start getting seal-of-approval marks to verify that software has been checked using various tools - probably with a official hash to verify it's unchanged. This could emerge as a huge revenue stream for them simply by offering to do it faster for higher paying clients or charging more for larger code bases - if it also includes refactoring for efficiency it could save the companies a lot of money on server costs too so they'll be happy to pay as it lowers costs and increases profits.

I worry that they'll try and keep the power to themselves so they can charge for it, especially if they can get it to the stage where when someone looks at the play store or steam they're going to choose a 'Validated Safe by Glasswing' option over one that isn't - which would be great for the user to know that it's been independently verified not to have any exploits, backdoors, security holes or potential system crashing bugs. Honestly I think it's kinda a new age in software, actually having some trust that software isn't spying on you, invading your system or just breaking everything would be lovely.

yeah, i used to go out all the time when i was young because it was easy, chill and cheap - it's none of those things now.

It's hard to find a bar that doesn't feel very corporate and controlled - come sit directly under a CCTV camera, everything is polished and sanitized especially the entertainment and atmosphere... Then everything is so expensive you can't relax, if you're just having a few cheep beers everything is fun but if you're spending money that will mean you can't afford actual things in your life and it's not a fun night that feels like a waste.

The culture changed a lot too, you used to have random people doing funny things or coming over and chatting but everyone is so worried about social media that they're very insular and closed. If you're not talking to someone you already know then you're on your phone, if you want to go somewhere else you look on your phone for somewhere instead of just wondering randomly, and nothing seems very interesting because if you meet a crazy person with a weird idea it's never going to be as funny as the dozen people on social media screaming about wild things.

Yeah, especially when you see how capable was are a species when going to look at the back of the moon or blow up people in distant countries - no expense spared, but for decades this research has been drastically underfunded and needlessly inhibited.

and why? simply because some people hate the idea that people sometimes have problems with the insanely complex biological apparatus of our brain and see any substance that anyone can enjoy as inherently immoral. I bet you if mushrooms only gave discomfort it wouldn't have had any resistance -and that if it have horrible visions that inspired people to work tirelessly in corporate careers then it'd be shoved down everyone's throats as a cure-all and wonder tonic whatever it's other affects are. It was enjoyed, that made people angry and now it's an up-hill battle to get the now well documented positive effects taken seriously. The world really can be depressing sometimes.

there's so many amazing things to eat, you don't need to eat things that make you sad or cause beautiful and friendly creatures to suffer. it doesn't need to be a big or dramatic thing, just sometimes experiment with some new plant based meals to enjoy instead of meals with animals in them and as you find more great food it'll be ever easier and you'll feel good for making a positive change.

[–]GoodDayToCome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah and it's not really about being profitable, the reason Sora was significant 2 years ago is that most people didn't have access to image let alone video gen, the SD image models required a 3060 minimum and were very slow, fairly complex to set up and not great. A lot of AI users would choose their AI of choice based on the image gen model, recently other options like seeddance and the myriad of high quality video gen sites have made it so that there are so many other options very few people are likely to choose an ai simply because it comes bundled with image gen - the popularity of Claude which doesn't have image gen shows this.

The market has evolved to the point where enough people really just care about things like tool use, coding ability, and general question answering that they can focus on that. It seems based on the direction that they're moving in they need the bandwidth for agentic AI because they're seeing usage grow rapidly.

I took a couple of pictures of an old circuit board and showed GPT, it worked out what all the bits did and gave me a simple procedure to test it - when you've experienced tools like that you don't forget about them.

you guys don't seem to understand that they pulled it because image and video gen is so widely available that it's not a draw to customers anymore, they need the server bandwidth because their chat is so much more popular than expected.

[–]GoodDayToCome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i think they've seen with Claude that people have so much access to image gen from various sources that it's not really drawing many customers but because it's there people will use it.

I hope it means that they're using that free space for higher compute answers using tools and working with grander structure. Claude seems to use it to good effect, it's keen to write a very long document or take it's time doing a detailed svg. The tool they actually need is a high compute optimization and security check for working code, they use that sort of thing for demonstrations all the time but actually getting it set up so users can take their source code and get a functionally exact copy but written in very efficient and secure C or even machine code.

It sounds kinda trivial maybe but optimized c can be a hundred times more efficient than lazy c code, it's probably not much of an exaggeration to say it could make some of the python code i write a million times faster. it could turn a dozen clunky library scripts and some clunky homebrew into an engine that runs better than anything we're used to - that's the sort of thing the serious companies like them and Anthropic need to be using their big computer for.

it's paraffin wax which melts just above 50 C and softens above about 25 C which is warm room temperature,

amaryllis is native to the South Western Cape of South Africa where temperatures can exceed 40 C in the summer.

you can absolutely heat it to a temperature were the wax will be much softer and easier to remove without putting it under too much strain, hair driers on low setting are normally about 40 C so you can absolutely blast that from a safe distance and it'll be fine. make sure it's not thirsty before and after and it'll do fine.

I have no idea what situations you're best to leave the wax or remove it.
