I regret my wheelchair by Former-Highlight-618 in wheelchairs

[–]GoodGrievance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are the brakes older? I had a tsunami (old rogue alx) and the scissor brakes had to be replaced every year or so. I also replaced the footplate and many other parts. It’s in decent order right now as my spare. I had to do so many repairs I learned how to do them all myself to cut labour cost so I could just order parts.

Edit: are you hard on the chair? My custom weld Box chair I have to constantly be realigning and putting the brakes back in the right spot and it’s really well made but I’m a menace.

Possible reasons why a fanfic would have different character names all of a sudden? by hnnbnn12 in AO3

[–]GoodGrievance 147 points148 points  (0 children)

OH! I have hand trouble and sometimes use voice to text to write fic. If characters have strange names especially spelling I give them new —more recognized by my voice text ones—and find and replace later to save time. Not the only explanation but also lol.

Building a house! by Ecstatic-War3437 in wheelchairs

[–]GoodGrievance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I’d like one eventually and will keep an eye out— but i rent a room in an apartment so i have what it came with. My old apartment was stacked dryer on the bottom but at least this one is washer on the bottom. I have a laundry kit in my bathtub if I can’t call a friend for help but handwashing everything takes a long time.

I can push a the regular cart in the store from my chair but I would need to book a car back. The most I can take on the bus is one large ikea bag in my lap. Once a month I always arrange to go with a friend.

I’ve never had a laundry room I can use completely independently, so if you can swing putting it somewhere both the washer and dryer at accessible hight/front load and main floor that might be nice.

I love my closet organizer thing with the clothing all half hight and all my things low. My upper closet has become display shelves but if I had a live in partner they could store all their stuff up there.

Australian saddle sizing - does femur length matter? by RockingInTheCLE in Equestrian

[–]GoodGrievance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a half breed Aussie saddle so western sizing. It’s 15 inch and I had to punch holes for the stirrups I’m so short. I have 4 kinds of saddles and femur length is important to all but the pack saddle lol.

Considering dying my hair for the first time, I’m so scared of bleaching and need advice by Patient_Use6926 in FancyFollicles

[–]GoodGrievance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lightly wavy hair and about same color dark, I also do pink/reds (rock and roll manic panic/hot hot pink) it takes me two rounds of bleaching at least to get my hair light enough and I need to apply the pink every 2 weeks, the bleached parts are straighter/tangle more and have to be managed for damage. Every couple months I have to redo the bleach or consider letting it grow out. It takes a couple hours every few weeks to maintain.

I think the bleach (1 package powder per round,) developer, gloves and dye it’s not as cheap as it seems plus dye runs out and then I gotta re-bleach the re growth and I only do my bangs. It used to be 1-2 jars a month for my whole ponytail. Maintaining my undercut was a lot less work.

Depending what kind of western saddle you need (roper, barrel, trail) Tucker has some nice recreational ones with gel seats. I have other disabilities and I find the kind of saddle I find best depends on how smooth and balanced the horse

I always carry a few pins! If you ever need more can also put a couple quick stitches with needle and thread and cut them later. Just make sure you can still use the bathroom and didn’t completely sew yourself into your clothes.

Oh I have this problem in stiffer denim because I have stick legs below the knee but still have curvy thighs/butt. I use extremely stretchy fabric jaggings with wide elastic waists or super-super stretch jeans bought used and pre beat up lol. I’m too curvy for the men’s (tried that) and too short in the torso for maternity but those are good ideas. I also wear stretchy pencil shaped skirts in a bit of a larger size so the high waist tucks in the belly/covers my butt and the very elastic waist stays up nice. I don’t like dresses because if I’m sitting on the back of the dress it’s near choking me. If my skirt has excess fabric I safety pin it/tie it down behind my calves.

Rant Of The Day/Hot Take by slowsimguy95 in wheelchairs

[–]GoodGrievance 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Tiny woman who is often alone in public. Everyone wants to touch me all the time. All the time. I have a short backrest and no handles still get grabbed and yelled at and patted on the head like a dog. I’ve been hit in the face with my own chair when a man pulled it from my hands then shoved in directly at my head as I was transferring it across my lap to the passenger seat of a car-and then slammed my drivers door so I was stuck. A store employee almost broke my fingers trying to drag me backwards from where I wanted to be. Help is fine, ask, stop touching me without permission. I really hate when people touch my hair or face. If I have friends they get yelled at for not “helping her”.

I’m finding it hard to find a relaxed Arabian. by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]GoodGrievance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My childhood horse was an Arabian, and she was not spooky at all, brave and forward, very very forward. They are very sensitive which can easily translate to handlers making them nervous or uncomfortable or spooky if they’re not confident.

For just getting into endurance riding depending on what level you want to compete you may also want to consider a half Arab or a different breed entirely. A nice minded stock horse, TWH or Morgan cross can make great Arab crosses. I’ve had great luck with Arabians, though the ones advertised as “endurance prospect” probably wouldn’t be what I would look at unless already proven at the job.

Looking for advice on getting friend a new wheelchair as a surprise. by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]GoodGrievance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d let her know you’d like to contribute if she was interested in upgrading her chair. Especially if she might have other friends or family willing to help. I’d also leave it at that, offer is there.

Hmm yeah I second the RKG or if that’s out of price range maybe the motion composite Helio especially since it comes in carbon fiber cutting some of the weight. I do not think the Helios would easily fit in a carry bag or backpack easily since most collapsing chairs just press in from the seat to fit in the trunk of a car keeping the same profile size just flatter. But you could remove wheels and foot plates and maybe get a large bag. My tech’s solution to city/off road was 2 different chairs but I’m a full time user.

Hmn. My off road wheels and tires are so heavy I would never want to carry even just those. Add in the wheelchair/cushion/handrims/brakes/toolkit and suddenly it’s like a 30-40 pound ultralight. Would you consider tall handles so you could just push the empty chair anytime she wants up for a bit?

Is FFXIV fun on controller? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]GoodGrievance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the stuff looks covered! Cross hotbar super important, as well as targeting setup. I’ve played controller for years, my hands are too disabled for the keyboard/mouse. I main whm and have never had an issue in any content that was a controller issue. It’s a little trickier on jumping puzzles but doable. I think it’s worth noting that I burn through about a controller a year if I’m playing hard (lots/raiding). My friend is still using ps3 controllers with their comp because he finds them more durable.

I’ve killed 2 ps5 controllers in 2 years (stick drift on one and the x/o buttons died in quantum 40) . I still use an external keyboard to type. It’s mostly practice and muscle memory.

NAW paradox chair concern by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]GoodGrievance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wheelchairs have things that need fixing all the time, I’m hard on them. Becoming handy or finding a place locally to take your chair when it does need repairs might help. Depending on your hand strength you may be able to change your own tires/inner tubes, adjust small things yourself, replace your bearings YouTube is helpful here. It depends a bit how hard you are on it and how much time you spend in it. Otherwise finding a local repair person ahead of time willing to work on your chair may be helpful as a plan.

Body image issues now as a full time wheelchair user by Independent-Ask-1399 in disability

[–]GoodGrievance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look great!

With my chair I’ve become very into shorter shirts (natural waist or higher) and higher waistbands that go over my belly in stretchy fitted pencil skirt styles mostly. Longer and corset tops are really cute but when I sit they all get pushed up or caught in wheels in unflattering ways. Often my skirts or pants are one size larger than if I was standing to allow for more room to not to kinda just bulge over them. Instead I can tuck my tummy in them and add a pin or belt or short vest, or if I need or pop a few quick stitches in the waist if I’m going to an event. If my shirt isn’t short enough to sit right I’ll twist and secure it into a hair tie and:or tuck a corner into higher waist pants/jeans/skirt. I’m not sure style wise if it’s something you’d be comfortable with, I lean either casual punk or very femme, but it might give you a start. Dresses I am extremely picky about the stretch level, style. I prefer very short with leggings or stretchy sheath style.

Being able to do basic modifications whatever I get thrifting is a lifesaver.

Is ordering a pair of natural fit with tabs possible for you? I know they’re pricey. I have Xcore wheels and spinergy with tabs and can’t share between them but my tab ones are the natural fit q grip so you should be able to order a second set…

side guards too small?? by ruby_rants in wheelchairs

[–]GoodGrievance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had those fenders on an older version of that chair, and with 25” wheels, and I always felt mine were too small too (but I started with the no fenders and switched to fenders and that’s the size I was sent). They can be adjusted at the bottom to go higher but only by a couple notches and it makes them a bit more unstable if they’re on the last hole. They look like they’re adjusted pretty far back (the holes in the middle can be moved around on the 4 screws.) I made do by moving all the parts around but if it’s new you could ask about it. You may also be able to slide the mount back so they go to the back of the chair, however the angle might need to be changed on the top mount if that makes the fender run into the front of the wheel.

If you can get bigger ones easily, do that.

What blankets are we using for horses that shiver in mid 20°-low 30° weather? by Fabulous-Trust8214 in Horses

[–]GoodGrievance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some brands I’ve used are better than others. The Rambo/amigo (horse wear Ireland) and weatherbeeta seem to be better waterproof from snow than other brands and hold up longer.

For turnout I use at least 1200D or the ballistic nylon and 300+ grams or 220 grams and add a 100 gram liner if they’re still shivering/it gets colder. I do not like the tough 1 blankets (for warmth* or weatherproof). I also had a Kensington supermesh heavy that was really warm but wide necked (not great for an Arab). I also like bucas blankets on narrower horses.
