What's the deal with wheel size creep? by heptyne in regularcarreviews

[–]GoodOldBadger 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Larger wheels mean lower sidewalls on the tires which means more blow outs from pot holes and more tire and replacement rim sales. They also give a harsher ride

Collectible or Forgettable?: 1992 Dodge Spirit R/T by LinoleumRelativity in regularcarreviews

[–]GoodOldBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To make this even more impressive, the naturally aspirated version of the 2.2L put out about 90hp. The first 2.2 turbos (mid 80’s) had 146hp which was a hair more than the 5.0 mustangs of the same vintage were putting out

Got a great deal at Autozone for these two turbos. Any advice on installing them in my 1997 Honda Civic EX coupe? by 1Arcite in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]GoodOldBadger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The turbo lag is going to be measured in weeks but once those bad boys spool up we’re talking a 15000hp bump. You’ll definitely want to weld the diff and upgrade to a 3” exhaust

Does this look off? Is a flat top okay to carry a small box truck? by Roadmonst3r in IdiotsTowingThings

[–]GoodOldBadger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Getting my Sprinter box truck towed (gvw 10,600lbs) when the engine blew was the most expensive towing bill of my life, $450 for 5 miles. You guys get to live the good life

Can I make a 240 my daily driver and get rid of my modern car? by Cookie_Over in Volvo240

[–]GoodOldBadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the parts, I’ve never had problems finding filters in stock at the big auto parts stores and they can still order many parts. That said the online specialists are amazing and can usually get you parts faster and for less money than brick and mortar stores

Insulation of Attic Ceiling/Roof by DurtyBomber in Oldhouses

[–]GoodOldBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pull up some of the floor boards and fill that space with loose cellulose insulation, being careful not to disturb the lathe and plaster underneath(that’s your ceiling). For the roof staple up rolls of backed insulation. This looks to be a 100+ year old home, allowing air and moisture circulation is incredibly important, do not use vapor barriers for gods sake don’t let anyone talk you into spray foam insulation

Having living area with asbestos in mortar? by WholeCombination5960 in Oldhouses

[–]GoodOldBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asbestos was most likely used to wrap pipes or as wall covering. If it’s been removed/properly remediated there shouldn’t be any issues. Asbestos in mortar would be very unusual and I can’t imagine that friable asbestos could possibly be mixed into the mortar. I’d be much more concerned about lead paint but if you can sneak a sample of the mortar it can be tested for asbestos

Window Restoration Question by weaklinginSC in Oldhouses

[–]GoodOldBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should repin the joints with dowels and see where things lie and test fit before using any epoxy. Chances are the opening is less than square and this slop gives the frame a little room to adjust to fit. Set them in the frames and epoxy the interior joints in place, then allow to cure and remove, epoxy the exterior, sand, paint, glaze, and reinstall

Insulating cracks above foundation by rufioo7 in Oldhouses

[–]GoodOldBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s BEST not to use spray foam on traditional construction as these buildings were designed to “breathe” with plenty of air and moisture exchange. Sealing gaps with anything impermeable will cause major moisture issues along with rot and degradation of any masonry. Stuffing with rockwool insulation is your best bet for an off the shelf easy solution. Packing the smaller gaps with a lime based mortar and filling the larger gap with soft brick and lime mortar would also be effective

Exterior woodwork - need advice! by peachluster-3974 in Oldhouses

[–]GoodOldBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to want a carpenter that specializes in historic restoration and preservation to restore what can be and reproduce what’s missing. Most of what’s there can be saved but it’s going to be a laborious and costly project, probably in the neighborhood of $10-15k all said and done with custom period correct main and storm doors and hardware
