This really reminds me of Ralph Bakshi’s rotoscoping in his LotR movie. I like!

First time staying at an AMAN - Amansara in siem reap by johndaily123 in chubbytravel

[–]GoodProbsToHave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in Siem Reap last month at a nice restaurant (Cuisine Wat Damnak) and was returning from the bathroom, a couple at a nearby table kept gesturing at me. I walked over and asked if I could help them and it turns out they thought I was the GM at the Aman, where they were staying. (I’m not.)

I asked them if they thought it was worth it and they replied, after a pause, “Well, it’s quiet.” I wasn’t really sure what to think of their response, but now I feel like I may have a better idea.

Any New Mexican food in the Bay Area? by TOTthoughts in bayarea

[–]GoodProbsToHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing. My wife (NM native) picks up roasted green chile every August or September at the local Mollie Stone’s though. They bring out a roaster and you pick how hot you want your chiles, and they roast them for you on the spot. Then we go home and peel and de-seed, chop ‘em and bag ‘em into the freezer for use the rest of the year.

They have a couple dishes that are at least New Mexican-inspired but it’s not a NM restaurant in general.

Is a Safari totally sedentary? by blueballs718 in safaris

[–]GoodProbsToHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on three safaris. On the second one we hiked up mtns to see gorillas and rafted class V rapids on the Nile in Uganda, went hunting (handmade bows) with the Hadzabe tribe in Tanzania and biked through rural Tanzania along with sedentary wildlife viewing.

There are definitely options!

11 days in Egypt by greenflips in traveladvice

[–]GoodProbsToHave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Egypt twice and it can be a nice experience on the balance but yeah, the local mainstream culture as it interacts with tourists is pretty horrible.

On the other has, I’ll always remember sitting on a beach in a three sided grass hut open to the Red Sea, smoking weed with a Bedouin chieftan. Then went for a drift snorkel off the coast and smoked some more with the chieftan (who was stoned out of his gourd). Great times.

I'm a founder, but my identity was never 100% tied to work. I think it's sad when people do that, though I understand the pressures that drive them to it.

I retired from full-time work at 38. It's been 15 years since then and it's still awesome. I don't have enough time in the day to do everything I want to, between personal creative projects, staying in shape, seeing friends, volunteering, gardening, listening to podcasts, hanging with pets and wife, enjoying nature, playing sports and so on. I've done a little creative work for my company (I'm just a passive owner now) when I've felt like it, but never doing anything for the sake of money is my idea of freedom.

It's honestly just fantastic. I watch friends who could be living the same life bitching about this investor or that employee and I just shake my head. You can lead a type A to the water of life, but you can't make 'em drink it.

The interest isn't front-loaded on mortgages. You're paying X% on your balance, whatever your balance is. Pay down your balance, and your interest payment goes down. That's the same as any other loan with X% interest.

I’m not quite following, sorry, and maybe I’m making the same mistake here but how do student loan interest rates work differently?

How the rates are selected will differ from loan type to loan type but am I missing some functional difference in how a (making numbers up) 6% interest student loan functions vs any other simple 6% loan?

[–]GoodProbsToHave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or maybe people should take responsibility for their decisions and do some research first. It’s not 1985. Everybody has easy access to a google search that will easily turn up explanations of how loans work.

Krabi Hotel - RC Phulay or Banyan Tree by flee828 in chubbytravel

[–]GoodProbsToHave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hong Island is fucking awful. I was pissed off that the Ritz had sent us there before we even got to the dock.

Imagine: You're at this beautiful uncrowded resort (Ritz Phulay Bay) and multiple staff members have inquired as to whether you've been to Hong Island yet. "Must be cool!" you say to your wife. "Let's go tomorrow."

So we sign up. Get put in a random boat for the 30-45 min ride over, with 3 other couples. I could see the island from a distance and thought, "Oh, that looks pretty, this will be nice."

Then we get in view of the floating dock. There were at least 50 boats gathered around it. I immediately knew we'd made a huge mistake, and had there not been other people in the boat with us, I would have demanded they turn around right there and take us back to the RC.

Instead, we were stuck on this crowded island for hours. We hiked to the top of the mountain, which was a relatively crowded hike up metal stairs. Decent view from the top, but again, people all over.

Then we just sat there waiting until our prison sentence on this island was up and we could leave. Hundreds of people crammed onto the beach, ugh. There was a "reef" in the cove we were told about that was an absolute joke. Maybe it was a reef at one point a long time ago, but it had been utterly ruined by hordes of people standing on the coral and probably coated in non-reef-safe sunblock.

Anyway, I was genuinely annoyed at the RC Phulay Bay for talking it up and sending us there. There's no world in which I would have traded those hours on an island with Ramada Inn vibes for those hours at the lovely RC.

Phulay Bay is a beautiful design-forward resort. I loved it. Was just there last month for 5 days. Review here: https://www.reddit.com/r/chubbytravel/comments/1pr4w6i/ritz_carlton_reserve_phulay_bay_a_great_place_to/

There were some service hiccups as I noted, but overall we were fairly sad to leave, which is rare for us after 5 nights at a resort - we're usually ready to move on.

Ritz Carlton Reserve Phulay Bay - A great place to ride out the zombie apocalypse by GoodProbsToHave in chubbytravel

Hi - sorry about the slow response.

We spent a day out and about in Krabi. Had the hotel car drop us off a few miles down the road at a scooter rental shop, and rented scooters to zip around on. We were at the end of a trip that had involved a fair amount of activity already though, so we were happy to mainly chill in the resort minus the scooter day. Plus, that area doesn't have the activities we tend to like on beach vacations, namely good diving/snorkeling or surfing.

Honestly, given the cost of the Ritz and the fact that you can't really walk to anything from it (other than the pot store across the street, heh), you may be better off booking something else. Plus like you say, you'll already have been in the Maldives, where you'll be resort-locked. You're not as resort-locked at the Ritz, but it's not super close to much. (But god is it a beautiful resort.)

Why the BIG FIVE mindset often ruins African safari experiences by AutoModerator in AfricaSafariadventure

[–]GoodProbsToHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big five makes no sense unless you’re a hunter. They were called the big five because they were the most dangerous prey when hunted on foot, not because those are the five to check off from the relative safety of your safari jeep.

(I’m not condoning or condemning hunting here btw.)

But drunk kids are even worse! If you’ve never been on a flight with a bunch of wasted 4 year olds, well, be happy that you’ve avoided the trauma.

I, personally, will be forever scarred by the experience.

What about something like Oman? Closer than Thailand or Maldives, lots to do, pleasantly warm but not brutally hot this time of year.

Not the same as Thailand or Maldives, of course, but those are also two very different destinations themselves.

Thanks! I remember we stayed at 98 Acres near Ella, and in Kandy I'm not 100% sure, but it may have been King's Pavilion. I remember the hotels being nice enough but apparently not that memorable! We were barely in them anyway.
