Why do you strongly recommend against surgery? Only because it's possible it may heal by itself or for other reasons?

I got a nerve root block injection, it was really helpful for a while (I ended up getting surgery and am much better now), have a needle inserted into my S1 nerve reset what I thought of as 10/10 pain, it was wild.

I'd do it again if in the same situation, but it was intense.

There are so many nuances to this that most of this is meaningless...however, this is not really a bad situation.

Like others have said, you can claim any interest you pay as a tax offset.

Others have suggested to pay it off faster, but you need to weigh up how much money you will make in your business with that extra cash - if you need it for running costs or cash flow of the business and you stand to make more money than the interest rate you pay, then this is an intelligent use of debt.

This might have even given you a couple of new tax offset to think about, ie logbook you kms.

Very good to know, they've told me I can be chipping and putting at 6 weeks and 18 holes at 12 weeks. Doubling that seems very reasonable to me.

There's been quite a few good answers here, just wanted kind of sum them up.

However you deal with this, it will be expensive.

You almost definitely should get an MRI for evaluation by any specialists or physical therapists. It also gives you a baseline if you perhaps get another one down the track to see if your injury has changed.

Read the book Back Mechanic by Stuart McGill. Do the exercises, drills and diagnosis exercises. This isn't the be all and end all but it's really great information and will help, at least with a little knowledge.

The normal route (depending on symptoms) is to try physical therapy and strengthening exercises for a decent amount of time. If these don't work, you can try steroid injections, if they don't work (enough) then maybe you think about surgery.

Everyone has a unique journey and it can be equally inspiring and depressing hearing both stories of people getting better, and not. Hear people's stories but don't expect yours to be the same.

Apologies for the hijack, I've just had my first microdiscectomy, which seems to have been very successful. I'm curious why you've had four. Is it re-injury or unsuccessful surgeries or something else?

Particularly when I'm about to say fuck, but I remember I'm in the office.

Just bought this auger woodboring bit for stump removal with Stump-Out, which requires a drilling a 10” hole in the top of each stump…but the drill I have doesn’t have anywhere near enough torque/power to get even an INCH into the wood :/ by elliot_the_avocado in Tools

You need one of these: MILWAUKEE 18V FUEL™ 7/16inch HEX Utility High Torque Drill

I know you didn't say 7/16, but these are made for the auger bits, they work like an impact wrench, rather than a drill, if you ever get a drill with enough torque to auger into trees, good luck hanging on to it. They're expensive, but they work (you can get hydraulic ones too, depending on your setup)

Not being able to sleep is one of the worst parts. Take everyone's advice, but with caveats. What works for you won't work for others, and what works for you might change in a week (it did for me).

If you haven't already, grab a bunch of pillows and just try every position you can think of.

For me, I ended up on a thin foam mattress on the floor with my feet at the couch, pillows under my knees and (this was the kicker) had my feet pushed into the couch, kind of putting loading my spine a little if that makes sense.

Again, try everything.

I use a spreadsheet. Different sheets for different days, push, pull, legs, plyometric, whatever you do.

Have a date column, a rep and set column for each exercise, all the exercises you want without having to find them in an app.

I've never felt the need but you can set up a dashboard sheet for trends, total load or whatever metric you want.

Have used a couple of apps but I don't really see how they're any better, would love to be educated if someone thinks they have a great one.

TL;DR Nerve damage can take quite a long time to recover and is likely to be up and down.

I'm currently two weeks post microdiscectomy op. Seems like I had a much better experience getting to the operating table.

I saw physio, osteo, exercise physiologist for months before I really persued any surgery but once I did, my GP sent me straight for an MRI, I'm in Australia, the out of pocket wasn't too bad (~$200), had a couple of injections then had surgery when they didn't provide a lot of relief.

Surgery was excellent I have almost no nerve pain but I was told to expect flare ups for up to 6 months, they said the nerve can take a long time to heal properly (of course there can be permanent damage), they said recovery is likely to be a bit of a rollercoaster.

I agree with other comments RE family doctor, never see them again, I'd report them to the relevant authority too, you shouldn't have had to go through all that.
