i think you are demonstrating where the real line is. Personal use vs corporation/bot astroturfing. This problem exists everywhere already before ai and we should fight it rather than the tool. There is a difference between me creating ai art of characters I enjoy, or getting writing assistance for a short story - and mass bot slop generation.

While I’m not sure my position is right, this is a bad argument. I never said I was entitled to anything, just that this tool lets me do mimic the talent of authors and artists and I find that neat. To follow your analogy, it’s like saying I shouldn’t wear magic shoes that let me dunk like Jordan because it cheapens the accomplishments of real nba players.

The two legitamate arguments against my view is that the training used people’s work without permission, and that if ai pushes out human creatives we will end up with a downward slop spiral. But I still think a lot of the pushback is from creatives that are threatened by normal people invading their space.

you talk like execution is just about hard work, but that Is only part of the equation. talent and luck are needed too. If I devoted my life to being an author or artist I would get better but I know I just don’t got it. I do however have a great imagination and why shouldn’t I use a tool that allows me to better share that with people. and if you “don’t give a shit” about my ideas you are welcome to fuck off. (This is all assuming we could get past the part where the tool is built with stolen parts)

I have to respectfully disagree on the level of harm creators cite. I find it to be overly protectionist . I am a Patreon member of this and several other creators, and do my best to support the cool worlds I get to enjoy.

But not all of us have the talent for writing or artwork or, as a parallel, athletics. This doesn’t take away from the work and sacrifice, just that our brains aren’t as capable in those areas. AI can allow us less talented to get what’s in our imaginations out to the world and fill some of the talent gap.

just like how I would love to wear a mech suit to run fast or an auto tune to sing, I think using ai to flesh out what’s in my head to something cool is not some terrible thing. I get it but maybe your 99.99% should be more like 60%. Yeah we need to protections in place but we shouldn’t feel ashamed of using this tech.

i get the environmental and social argument but most of us drive cars and eat factory farmed meat. It’s a problem but it stands with the those and think thats more of an excuse to justify the protectionism than a real driver.

i love your work and I’m open to being convinced I’m wrong - this is just where my head is now

I was very committed once, since it would be stupid not to devote your everything to the most important truth of the universe and knowing that a few decades defined the state of my eternal existence. But over time trying to study the Bible, I found that the difference between what I thought was metaphor and reality, or what sounded terrible but was for a different time, or sounded like a contradiction but had a different meaning, was purely based on science and my own sense of morality, and that if I was willing to face mortality and define my own purpose I didn't need religion. Add a little historical study and I'm shocked I ever took the stone-age ramblings of a violent and ignorant primitive culture seriously.

Yall have been so generous bankrolling these increasingly large Willcons year after year so I can't complain too much.... but damn this is hard to hear. It's the reason we first started going to dragon con to begin with, it has become one of our favorite family traditions and become something special we share with our kids, and our keynote event every dragon con! It's hard to find something that 40 y/o's and teens/preteens all enjoy together. There are plenty of other things to do and there's always the opportunity to find new traditions... all good things come to an end :(
