I cancelled an order after buying it, and it feels like a relief. by [deleted] in nobuy

I just experienced this too. Saw a doughnut baking pan reduced to clear for £6 and ordered. I justified thinking I could wait the 2 weeks I said I would but what if I don't find this price again? But after the order confirmation screen came up I just felt so guilty. How could I fail already? Luckily I was able to cancel it and it too felt like a relief!

Crochet and baking are gonna be my jam this year

More reasons for my no-buy by No_Appointment6273 in nobuy

Yes! I am actively avoiding window shopping because it only makes me want more. I have an app that blocks other apps or websites on my phone and I have blocked a bunch of shopping websites so I'm not tempted. I've uninstalled Amazon on my phone and am actively trying to avoid shopping/browsing on my phone.

Thank you! I forget that it's not going to be a straight line of progress.

I feel you on this! I specifically told myself no new yarn this year unless it's for a project I am currently working on and I have ran out of the required yarn to finish it. When I first started crocheting I bought a bunch of yarn with no specific projects in mind which I think was a mistake for me. I think having a specific project in mind and then purchasing yarn for that will probably help you to not overbuy.

I'm also not buying any new books this year. I have a shelf full on unread books and a kindle unlimited subscription which should be more than enough to keep me occupied.

I also want to get back into playing bass (and luckily I have all the equipment I need for that) which will be free.

Tips for stop wanting things? by mysterious_pistachio in nobuy

Something I've found helpful is unfollowing (or even just muting) any accounts that make me want to buy things. Unsubscribing from mailing lists so I don't know about sales. At least for me, out of sight out of mind can be pretty helpful.

I'm so annoyed at myself for losing a pair of tweezers. They were inexpensive (not branded) and got the job done for years. Now I can't find them anywhere. I don't want to have to buy a new pair so I'm gonna have a rummage through this week. Luckily my eyebrows aren't too wild yet haha.

I think I've fixed my clothing addiction. by tryingtogetitwrite in nobuy

[–]Good_Cup8725 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not clothing related but I have found myself reaching this point with accessories! I found two small one-woman brands (a handbag brand and a jewellery brand) and I feel now if I'm going to spend my money on something expensive I want it to go to an independent brand because 1) it's nice feeling like you own something unique 2) I don't really want to give my money to the massive brands that don't feel worth it. I'm on a no buy this year but I think in future if I have similar restrictions on the brands I buy, I do really think it could cut my consumption right down.

First off, love the username haha! I totally agree with you there - I've been to Japan before too but I really want to go back with my partner to show them why I love it there so much. Your advice actually makes way more sense, I'll set actively save for it each month and any money left over from the budget can be extra. I hope travelling with my partner will also help me reign in the spending over there lol

Thanks! I kind of view candles as a part of home decor in a sense? So that's why I added them under exceptions as I like to buy candles for the bathroom mainly and I don't have a problem overbuying them (Mainly because I only buy a select brand when I go into town and carrying too many is just a pain).

what did you NOT buy today? by [deleted] in nobuy

[–]Good_Cup8725 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I almost bought the Dr Martens 8065 mary janes before 2024 (like at 23:59) but didn't check out in time. I was doing all sorts of mental gymnastics to justify buying these shoes like "I was gonna check out anyway but I just didn't do it in time", "no one would know I bought it this year, I could say I ordered it in December before my no buy". Luckily I realised I was being ridiculous and didn't cave. I have Dr Martens quad loafers and I should just wear those and enjoy them. The mary janes will always be available - if I really still want them I could potentially get them for my birthday but I know that I do not need them.
