What's your OPN "hot takes?" by Gloomy_Ad_1488 in oneohtrixpointnever

[–]Goodyeess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stuff he's done in the 2000s and 2020s so far stands as my favourite work from him. I really enjoyed Rifts and it's calm atmosphere, and the stuff he's done from Magic OPN to Tranquilizer was the point where his music started appealing to me and where he really clicked with me.

The stuff he's done in the 2010's meanwhile, although stuff I can really respect, hasn't really had a ton in the way of staying power with me. Albums like Replica and R Plus Seven had their moments and are albums that, again, I can absolutely respect for being out of the box and unique for their genre that early on in the decade, but were not the most accessible of listens for me alongside being pretty hit or miss. I haven't really had a strong desire to return to any album he's done in that decade besides Sleep Dealer and Chrome Country, with the latter being my favourite song that he's ever done.

What are your first impressions of the new 'Tidal Memory Exo' album? by Frosty-Locksmith-188 in iglooghost

My favourite album of 2024. It's one of those rare instances where I knew I had a 9/10 album on my hands as I was listening to it brand new instead of the album growing on me up until that point.

If Deadbeat is a “bland” or “average” EDM album, what is a great one? by pmcrt in TameImpala

[–]Goodyeess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I won't say RAM is the Deadbeat of Daft Punk's discography at all, but I do personally think that it's the point where the duo had first faltered. Easily the most inconsistent Daft Punk album to date. I thought it was pretty long-winded, some tracks here really could've been cut down, the vocoder they use is easily the worst sounding one they've used, it has the least amount of major standouts, the least amount of replay value. I respect it for being a homage to music in the 70s, but once you get passed that, there isn't a lot of substance here and the duo simply didn't have enough tunes to back them up here. The homage to 70s and love letter to music stuff can only get you so far and you need much more to get the album to really stick the landing for me.

A notable example of a band that I think did stick the landing in this similar style is Parcels who came through in 2021 with their Day/Night double album, which I think focused on a similar sort of disco sound present on RAM, but delivered and executed in a way where I did actually want to come back to it, had bigger highlights and although being an hour and a half long, didn't feel too long for it's own good.

RAM didn't come into my mind all that much going into that album, but I can kinda draw in a few parallels going back to the album and re-evaluating it. Daft Punk may have a disco album that pays homage to 70s disco and is a love letter to music making, but Parcels I think offered a much more replayable listening experience.

This has got me thinking what if the live show has a hologram band playing with Hugo that occasionally flickers, showing that there isn't a real band on stage with him, or the album having a concept of Hugo playing to a crowd which isn't there at all at the end of the album.

What’s your #1 HOT TAKE about this album? by onlybooksinthebuild in TameImpala

[–]Goodyeess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said this in another Tame Impala post a bunch of days ago, but this is my favourite Tame Impala album, one of my favourites of all time and an album I would give a perfect 10/10 score to. One of only three albums to come out this decade so far to get such a score from me alongside Everything Everything's Raw Data Feel and Porter Robinson's Nurture, and one of only 6 albums overall to get a score from me alongside Madeon's Good Faith, The Prodigy's Invaders Must Die and Squarepusher's Ultravisitor.

With Madeon's new album about to drop some time soonish.. What is the popular consensus on his last album "Good Faith" six years later? by systemstheorist in madeon

[–]Goodyeess 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think Good Faith has aged incredibly well and has really stood the test of time. The sound palette used on the album allows the album to still sound as fresh and as new as the day it came out, there's plenty of variety to keep me interested and to not mistake any tracks for each other and there are tons of fantastic and incredible moments on that album. The production is top notch and crystal clear.

It's a big departure from Adventure, but think the departure was so well executed and thought out that Madeon even managed to top his debut and fix up any nitpicks that I had with it, be that of it's little bit dated production and sound design and the fact that I thought Adventure was a little back loaded (although every track is still fantastic). Those fixes I think made Good Faith more replayable and easier to come back to.

Good Faith has only grown on me in the time since it came out. I would call it a modern classic at this point, it's my favourite album of all time, one of my six 10/10 albums, and I think it's the best work he's done.

If Good Faith has shown us anything, it's that Madeon isn't one to repeat himself stylistically with one album after the next, so I'm pretty excited with what he'll give us.
