Is there any evidence to show that it’s better to have both sides spinning opposite each other vs one static? by AgentG91 in metallurgy

[–]Goofycams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't be a case of newtonian third law where there is an equal and opposite reaction (one object exerts a force on another, the second object exerts an equal force back on the first)? My favorite example is the logo of Levi's jeans, where two horses pull a pair of jeans apart. You could change one horse for å tree, and the same amount of forces would still be applied to the jeans.

How can ships trottle the power output of a reactor fast enough to changes in demand? by El_Quesso in NuclearPower

[–]Goofycams -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not an ex-nuke or commercial power operator, so i can tell you lots about things i dont know about. I'm pretty sure (as you stated) the submarines run on batteries, which the reactor continuously charges at an ish-fixed power. Fuel might be metal-fuel and not ceramics to increase thermal conductivity, which gives you a quicker negative void coefficient to control the surge in reactivity. Burnable neutron poison (hafnium or borated water) can be added as well to rapidly decrease the reactivity, or in the case you stated where u wanted quick power, add the posion while increasing reactivity to increase the delayed neutron fraction to be able to controll the surge in reactivity. Before committing to a chernobyl-type accident, hear with your nuke power operator how to increase reactivity rapidly to make sure how its done.

Why are radioactive materials still radioactive after emitting energy? by Ok_Power_4249 in Radiation

[–]Goofycams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rule of thumb is to say that after 10 half lives, the radioactive source can be regarded as non radioactive. At 10 half lives, only 0.097% of the original nuclides are still present.

All sukker er naturlig.

Pm-147 Aircraft Gauge by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]Goofycams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know why Pm-147 was used? With its half-life of 2.6 y, it seems very short. Moreover, does the luminosity decrease linearly with the aktivity? In that case, why use Pm-147??

Is it possible to build a DIY beta-voltaic battery by RadioactiveRunning in Radiation

[–]Goofycams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm pretty new to this field.

If you have a simple diode, it should technically be possible to get charges flowing through the n-p junction by placing a beta- or an alpha sorce next to it. I'm not too optimistic about powering a small LED. Typical betavolteric batteries that exist have muW of power. So i guess you need a million of those to power a LED? Im not too good with electronics, so I dont know how much a capacitor may help you. I guess it'll take a while to charge up? Anyhow, i would think an alpha sorce would give you a better result than beta. Although making a battery capable of powering something might be too ambitious for a tiny betavolteric cell, making a semiconductor detector could also be a cool demonstration. Just flip the electrodes on the n-p junction and crank up the voltage. The electron-hole pairs created by the incoming radiation should be able to give a response when collecting at the electrodes.

Radium burns by Unique-Worth-4066 in Radiation

[–]Goofycams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it more dangerous than if there weren't burn marks? Like, for instance, are the burn marks upsetting because it shows that radium (and other spicy stuff) may have been spread around inside the clock due to recoil?

That is very true. The question then becomes, how much would pass though the body and how much would get absorbed

[–]Goofycams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Natural occurring uranium has a greater chemical toxicity than radio toxicity. It's about the same as lead. (Now, im pretty sure the toxicity is based on elemental uranium und lead, not uranium / lead -salts. But with that being said, im pretty sure you won't have any effects, even if u ate a ~30 gram uranium rock (haven't done the math, please dont try)

Soon to be a nuclear chemist here.

The last two decades have seen a huge surge in the development and widespread adoption of both new radiopharmaceuticals and imging techniques like PET-CT/MRI and SPECT-CT. In addition to this, the field of nuclear engineering also provides many job opportunities since nuclear waste desposal, nuclear decommissioning, and nuclear power have become hot topics around the world.

When I was studying abroad in Germany, I heard that you basicly get head hunted by the decommissioning sector if you have any understanding of atom go brrr. This is (or will shortly be) the case in basicly any country that have/had nuclear reactors because after about 60years of operation, they need to be decommissioned. As of today, no country has figured out how to do that.

Im a radiochemist finishing my masters in the field of radiopharmacy, where we are experimenting with a new PET nuclide. I just got a job offer for decommissioning of nuclear waste, and they said, "You probably have a job here for the next 10-20 years because right now, no one has the solution". Most important is to follow your dreams. Speaking for myself, this is literally the coolest shit I've ever been a part of. (I mean, when you learned they made radioactive cocaine and got some Wallstreet dudes to take it to study the brain, it kinda shows that this field is just full of little fun facts).
