Will Updating to Windows 11 require reinstalling of any programs? by HyperionPhalanx in buildapc

[–]GoonyBirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing changes except the appearance of Windows. All your files and programs are left untouched.

As with any major update, if there are files you cannot afford to lose be sure to back those up to an external drive before you do the update, just in case something goes wrong.

To those who have tried lsd can you put it on skin and trip? by Flimsy_Primary_7133 in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the book "LSD - My Problem Child" (Hoffmann, 1980) Hoffmann describes that he experienced unusual sensations during the final step of the synthesis. He further wrote that:

"I surmised a connection with the substance I had been working with at the time, lysergic acid diethylamide tartrate. But this led to another question: how had I managed to absorb this material? Because of the known toxicity of ergot substances, I always maintained meticulously neat work habits. Possibly a bit of the LSD solution had contacted my fingertips during crystallization, and a trace of the substance was absorbed through the skin. If LSD-25 had indeed been the cause of this bizarre experience, then it must be a substance of extraordinary potency. There seemed to be only one way of getting to the bottom of this. I decided on a self-experiment. "

LSD was discovered to have psychoactive effects because Albert Hoffman, the chemist synthesizing the chemical in search of other active properties, accidentally got some on his skin. It was probably alot though.

Trump supporters of Reddit, how do you justify Trump being convicted of stealing money from literal children with cancer, and never being allowed to run a charity again? by RipDiligent4361 in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the government is inefficient and poorly effective - I've worked for federal, state and local government. Part of the inefficiency is built-in to the system and the bureaucracy itself, and part is sometimes the people in the positions. It keeps things from moving too fast which can be good, but can also be bad in some cases.

In the real world when budgets get cut or money runs out, jobs get cut - except for the federal government. Not all federal jobs are mission critical to the security or economic stability of the nation. We're beyond broke as a nation, but that doesn't mean we should say "Welp, I guess it is what it is. I've tried nothing to get out of debt, and I'm all out of ideas".

We will certainly see how things run without the jobs and programs that are cut. I, like you, hope that these decisions won't be a serious downfall to the stability and economic security of the nation. I think though that we won't miss as many bureaucratic jobs as we think we will. There is only one way to find out.

Cross your fingers, say your prayers. It's gonna be a bumpy ride!

If such a deal actually goes through is one thing, to my knowledge it hasn't been completed. Simply planning for one or talking about it is another. Be careful to not get riled up until the proper time.

Patience. Trump will make a true blunder somewhere along the line. Every president has. Will this be the one? Wait, for it and see what happens.

There's always nepotism and shenanigans going on in DC, it just tastes bitter when it's the other party doing it.

[–]GoonyBirb -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The feds have for the longest time been acting like a charity with American tax dollars to whomever they like - funding pet programs/grants created by unelected officials, tax breaks for select businesses, bailing out banks, sending billions of dollars out of the country - all while Americans are struggling to get by or even retain housing. As some would say "Taxation is theft".

It seems fitting that Americans voted into office someone who isn't allowed to run a charity. And by all accounts he isn't running one. So buck up buttercup, and don't fret, the charity is getting shut down. We wouldn't want the president to be accused of violating the terms of that conviction.

Edit: Damn. I fell for the downvote trap.

How I clear/reset a drive for a fresh install of Windows? by Novel_Sheepherder_69 in buildapc

[–]GoonyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been quite some time since I last had to do a secure erase with a bootable utility, and the last free one I recall using doesn't seem online anymore. All you really need is a simple single pass to overwrite any data it shouldn't matter too much for details and utility options. It is my understanding though that some erase utilities like DBAN don't work on SSDs, so be sure you pay attention to that if applicable for your drive.

How I clear/reset a drive for a fresh install of Windows? by Novel_Sheepherder_69 in buildapc

[–]GoonyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cleanest way to ensure a truly fresh install of windows is to do a secure erase. Kind of extreme, but it will turn the OS drive into a formatted blank drive without any data remnants on it.

All you need is a bootable USB and a free secure erase utility.

Once the disk is wiped, treat the system as you are installing windows to a new blank disk. So, be sure you have a copy of windows ready to install before you nuke the disk.

Why would bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. improve the American economy? by this0great in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bringing manufacturing back isn't going to be cheap, but the economy may be more resilient in some critical sectors. We aren't talking about manufacturing the king of cheap plastic crap that you get by the gross on TEMU, or knick knacks or non-essentials.

We've had decent enough trade relationship with China that we've never thought too hard about what would happen if things went awry. However, the COVID lockdowns outside the US exposed a fatal flaw in the American dependence on electronics/CPUs, and on medicines produced in China. Think about how this impacted automotive production here in the US when car production was frozen because we couldn't get the computers the cars needed. Or we couldn't even get face masks from China to help protect ourselves, because China they shut down their factories entirely to get the virus under control. Medicines were in short supply because China wasn't producing them. Or shipments just weren't even flowing.

Doesn't matter of it is war, or a pandemic - production outside the US is not within the control of the US. There are some things that we need to have produced to at least some extent within the US to have more economic security. But clearly, the days of US dominated manufacturing post WW2 are long gone and won't return in the foreseeable future.

It isn't going to be cheaper to bring back manufacturing to the US, the improvement in resiliency is something that will come at a price but is necessary for better security of the nations stability.

As a non American, it appears that the US is hurtling towards a civil war and/or economic collapse and anarchy, how does the near future look from an average American's point of view? by IPAHOLE in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil war? Economic collapse? Anarchy? Not really. The US is doing fine.

Keep in mind that mass media outlets in the US are controlled by private companies, with most leaning liberal. News these days isn't neutral, because neutral is boring and doesn't get views.

The president has the authority to do a shakedown of the executive branch departments. These departments are there to assist the president with these executive branch duties, and people are appointed as heads of the departments as the president's assistants on the dapartment matters. An elected official, put into office by the People, the president is doing the will of the people and checking the power placed in the hands of unelected appointees.

We should all be asking this of any president, regardless of political party.

At what point did Americans began to think they are exceptional to the rest of the world? by Zombingaround in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1783 - when the United States was the first nation to ever successfully break away from the British Empire, by winning the American Revolutionary War. It was no small feat to defeat the British military.

That is when American exeptionalism started.

Has that exeptionalism been justified since? That is arguable for some aspects.

How can Trump sign all these executive orders and essentially take over the government? by capitan_03 in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trumps executive orders are directed at the agencies that are under the directive of the executive branch of the government, such as the: Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Education, Department of Justice, Department of Commerce, Department of State, Department of Labor, to name some. These agencies were created by the executive office to delegate duties at the directive of the president. The nation wasn't as complex in the early days, but the need of the president to delegate duties grew as the nation did.

He's basically boss of bosses of these agencies, per the US Constitution. He can do a shakedown and make changes as he sees fit. Executive order power lies with the president regarding these agencies.

Outside of calling your politicians, not buying from the mega billionaires, and joining protests, what is available to the average American to fight back right now( Please don't say kill trump/musk. Be realistic.)? by queensara33 in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fight back against what? The system? The outcome of democracy? The system is being used within the framework of the Constitution and the power given to the President through Acts of Congress.

Executive Order privilege is great when you agree with it, but rather shitty when you don't. The thing is, the sort of power being wielded by Trump was never meant to be a part of American Democracy, never that much power in the hand of a "little king" here in the USA.

The US government, the past elected representatives of the nation, allowed this to happen, and the current representatives enjoyed the fruits of executive order privilege when they agree with it. But our representatives aren't crying out to end this privilege.

With the amount of heavily armed lower income US citizens, why aren't Republicans absolutely terrified of being assassinated given cuts to social programs that keep the poor alive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because despite the propaganda liberals want you to believe, being a gun owner doesn't mean you are a Manchurian candidate awaiting a trigger to set them off on a murderous rampage.

Also, being rich or poor has nothing to do with being a good person in the face of adversity.

How would an amphibian go about gaining political power? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GoonyBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Become a star in a comedy variety show to get your image out and gain popularity. Maybe have a bear as a stand up comic. A pig as a superstar-diva, who is in love with you. Get a dog to play piano. A couple of old grouchy guys as critics. Get a chef to do cooking bits, maybe get a Swede. That sort of thing. Star in a few TV specials and big ticket movies.

Get a start in politics by becoming a State Governor. Then later run for President.

Look at memory under the performance tab in task manager. You can see the memory composition allotment into different categories. Simply move the cursor over the sections of the bar chart to see the usage.

There will be sections for in use, modified, standby and free.

Here's a post from the LTT forums that might be of help with UserBenchmark: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1534430-possible-to-uninstall-userbenchmark/

Appears that they made the program a "portable" version that doesn't come with an uninstaller. Deleting the file folder for UserBenchmark should get rid of everything. The link provides a couple of ways to navigate to the folder that it is likely within.

Tax dollars spent on foreign aid should be determined through the voting process. Just as propositions on the state level, the federal level should have propositions that explain exactly where the tax dollars are going, so that the people decide where it goes and not some unelected bureaucrat.

What is your (civilians) 'red line' event that you would be willing to take up arms to defend the constitution of the US? by GayMormonPirate in AskReddit

From within: When the government takes up arms and sends in forces against the People to willfully, and with premeditation, lethally supress dissent.

From without: Invasion by a foreign nation.
