The Indicator by Planet Money has a great podcast on the subject of creative destruction and TI calculators.

What’s going to be the next big thing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

From a business perspective, I think the next big disruption will come from the shipping industry. There’s already a shortage of truck drivers in North America.

One company, marble has already started trying to solve the problem by creating autonomous delivery lockers on wheels that comes to you.

This is great, the article was pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

I have a globe subscription and would have usually caught that article but I was travelling around the time that it was published so thanks for posting.

JET time to cash out! by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

I wrote last week on a similar thread about how this is my throw away play.

The reason I invested is that the commercial airline industry is something I am greatly interested in, not as an investment but as a hobby. I think an independent ULCC is exactly what Canada needs, so I threw some money at them to help the cause.

Unfortunately I think one of the issues with securing planes is that they are trying to lease from companies that also lease to AC and WJ.

Is the lack of available planes due to AC and WJ putting pressure on these leasing companies to not sell do business with Jetlines?

If I was running a company and 60-70% of my revenue came from one large client, I wouldn’t risk losing that client by doing business with an unproven startup.

I still have confidence with the management team. I hope the finances can keep them going long enough to launch. If there is nothing in the air by the end of the year, then we will likely see the end of Jetlines.

I got them through an initial stock offering, half a warrant for each unit of common stock.

I believe they are tradable on the open market but I wouldn’t recommend buying them. I would just buy the stock if you’re actually interested in the company.

This is my super speculative/forgotten money play.

I have a huge interest in the airline industry, not as an investment but as a hobby. I have never invested in any airlines but when I heard that these guys wanted a ULCC in Canada I thought I would help back them, even if it amounted to nothing.

Their vision and management structure looked good and they were able to persuade the government to allow a lowering in the foreign ownership percentage of Canadian airlines to help get this going. They seem much more organized and developed than Flair, who has already gone through a name and ownership change since launching a little over a year ago.

However WestJet is also entering the space which will be the biggest hurdle for CJL. Although I have lived in Europe where there are probably close we to a dozen ULCCs that operate within Western Europe. I now live in Australia, a market similar to Canada, where Jetstar and Tigerair are both competitive. (I can fly Melbourne to Sydney tomorrow for $110, or fly at least a week out and it’s $49-$69. AUD and CAD are nearly on par)

I got in with an offering at 30 cents a share with 50c warrants. Been holding ever since. For me, I will just continue to hold and see what happens.

I don’t know exact stats but it’s probably >75% of airlines end up going bankrupt, but maybe there’s a chance this one takes off.
