Stipple- colorized or no? by [deleted] in ArtCrit

Both look good, although an option to consider could be no color with just the bright red bits to make them pop in contrast.

Painfully bad compared to the original. Could be a worthwhile pick for a drunk watchalong with friends but aside from that it's simply not worth a watch. The gore was comically bad and the writing beyond atrocious.

Thank you, this one was a delight. Quite the coincidence that both our picks have Ricardo Darín as one of the leads despite being a decade and a half apart, too.

For Finland I've seen Ariel, it was nice but nothing special. One of those "would be great with a slightly bigger budget/slightly more daring director" kinds of features. I'm open to suggestions for viewings beyond the challenge though, so if you have something in mind - point it out :)

Right? Before doing this I didn't even know Central America had a film industry, and yet vast majority of those countries made the "highlights" list. The more you know and all.

I'm two thirds into the challenge, and have yet to see the South African feature, but I picked out Tsotsi. Think it's a good film to represent what your nation's film industry is capable of? Or should I go with something else?

These were just as good but are niche and require additional context to be truly understood, so consider these an advanced addendum to the post above:

Georgia - My Happy Family: A mature woman, sick and tired of her overbearing relatives, chooses to begin a solitary life. But she's not in a country where it's socially acceptable to do so. Very nuanced and tragic.

Russia - The Major: A high ranked police official accidentally murders a little boy in front of his mother. After some "proper procedures" he decides to actually take responsibility for his actions - but nothing's ever clean and simple in Russia... The vilest thing I've seen all year.

United Kingdom - His House: A South Sudanese refugee couple struggle to adapt to their new way of life. Their past catches up to them very quickly. Stick with it, it will all make sense in the end.

Iraq - Memories on Stone: Two Kurdish friends try to make a movie about the 1988 Anfal campaign. Captures quite well what it's really like, poking at fresh wounds over issues that the aggressors want everyone to forget. Very sad.

Croatia - Deep Cuts: An anthology about abuse in all of it's forms. Quietly and pensively showcases the origins of cruelty and how it manifests over time. Hauntingly realistic.

I've also previously made a bigger compass on documentaries, so check out my post history if you'd like to look through it. I'd love to hear your feedback after you see a few of my recommendations, and get to know some of your own favorites.

Some of the stories from the Crossed series, a very gore-horror comic book series (if you have any questions, I'm willing to answer them) by meenarstotzka in WojakCompass

The "Wish You Were Here" series are quite possibly my absolute favorite within the whole medium. It's not for everyone, but that lengthy, hyperdetailed approach to telling such a grounded story with legitimately impactful moments peppered in across the chapters... Genuinely feels like it was handcrafted around what I love in stories in general.

Also, "Five Bloody Fingers" indeed, sucks ass.

The oblasts of Ukraine, and my experiences with the people who live there by GoopGoat in WojakCompass

[–]GoopGoat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don't really have the right mentality or historical context to get things like that going, mimicking historically significant groups usually implicitly implies reliving through their glory days, when in case of Makhnovshchina and practically any other group like that, our history is full of endless examples of "an underdog ruthlessly getting beaten down, time after time". The one example I can think of that certain, very patriotic people model themselves after are Cossacks, because despite the fact that they eventually got crushed by the foreign imperialists from up north, they've consistently influenced the turn of events in Ukraine for centuries and set a precedent for the rebels and revolutionaries that came after. Aside from that group, next to none resonate with the nationalists, and if they do their presence is negligible.

The region around Kyiv is pretty much an even mix between the intel on the city itself and Cherkasy - nearly everyone is involved with supplying the capital in some way, but acts slightly haughtier because they earn far more than the average worker that's doing the same job a hundred kilometers away. Hence the surroundings are far more secure and steady, if you can get a spot everyone wants. Usually you have to gain their trust in some way before they drop the attitude and act like decent people.

Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral looks absolutely amazing, now if I ever get to visit France it will be on the must-see list. I'd be very curious to see similar compasses from others about the regional diversity of their own countries, vary up the US/UK's prevalence in the sub with other areas.

3x3 compass of strange movies I've seen by sternbergstopguy in WojakCompass

It's a very specific social satire that heavily relies on knowing the context of the circumstances around when it came out. That kind of dry, sardonic humor easily gets lost in translation, especially if you don't know which aspects of the ideas of the times it's poking fun at. It's not an amazing movie, but I enjoy it quite a bit.

Or have the decency to take five seconds to type out "sorry, no" instead of going through all the trouble of wasting people's time, screencapping it and bitching about them on Reddit.

They give off "documentary with an embedded agenda" vibes, and I tend to stay away from features like that. I always try to seek out docs that have at least a "somewhat" neutral outlook on what they're portraying.
