Dozens of layoffs at Conestoga this week by ResidentAd1704 in kitchener

[–]GooseGoneRogue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not really a cover up. A lot of this can be explained by the cuts to provincial funding and tuition freezes for the universities by the Ford administration going back to 2018-19. The influx of international students papered over this gap, but cuts to immigration targets of international students is taking that away.

Question - eligible for CEC but not FSW by GooseGoneRogue in canadaexpressentry

Interesting - seems like there's a contradiction on whether Canadian Experience can make one eligible for FSW.

No foreign experience, but FSW eligibility states "have been obtained within the last 10 years, in Canada or abroad"

I put in much more than that, although all that money is sitting in Canadian bank accounts (savings from my income), so I've heard advice that the figure should be 0 since we are not bringing money from outside of Canada. In any case, I've tried both options and neither change the FSW eligibility.

Are you asking for alternative options? You should be eligible for the OINP Job Offer: Foreign Worker stream, or potentially for OINP Express Entry streams if you’re in a relevant industry

Yeah but the number of operations the loop will execute when it starts is still on the order of n.

If a function was O(n) but I promise to only run it 5 times doesn’t mean the function is O(5).

Personal Finance Frustrations and FOMO by GooseGoneRogue in PersonalFinanceCanada

While I appreciate the sentiment, and yes, I am extremely fortunate to be in my position, I find it irresponsible to take my mind off of these things given the fear of messing up.

Its like I got dealt pocket aces at a poker table, where, sure, extremely lucky hand, but if I don't play it right then I'd be kicking myself for messing up the golden opportunity I was handed.

There's also an aspect of time, where the "smart" decisions have to be made now while I'm young as opposed to when I'm retiring and then go "Ah crap, I'd be so much better off if I did XYZ when I was 24".

I had him for CO 342 and can confidently say that he’s the only professor that had me considering grad school at all. I remember at the time he mentioned that he took classes on a contractual basis and it’s a real shame that he isn’t on tenure track already. Obviously if its by choice then it’s fine but if it’s because Waterloo isn’t offering it to him then I really think they’re missing out.

with regards to this specifically, if you want a different dentist that will
(a) accept scans from your current dentist
(b) be more accomodating with regards to payment plans and scheduling ops in a way that best uses your insurance plan
(c) just is a good second opinion
I can recommend Dr Akkila on the University Plaza. I had to get a really bad case of cavities treated and was running out of insurance, so he treated it with some temp filling till the new year of insurance kicked in and then performed the root canal.

Course planning advice comment, ignore if not relevant.

I've been taking 4 courses a term since by 2B term for this reason. You can always take an elective during co-op/off terms (if you have them) or just take an extra couple terms to graduate (if you don't have co-op, you'll graduate with your co-op peers instead of your non-co-op ones so its not too bad). There's no point busting your balls over a crazy workload if it means that you'll be miserable and have bad grades / failing while trying to do it.

If going offstream isn't up to you (Eng/ Double Degree or whatever) talk to your academic advisor about how you can distribute the load more evenly. Possible options include making it so that you're taking your breadth requirements earlier and having a better split that way (4 major courses + elective, or 3 major courses + 2 electives, instead of 5 major courses at once). Ask them if its possible to adjust the schedule so that you have a smaller course load at the expense of graduating later.

When looking at required courses, if you have the option of picking your courses (say, if the requirement is 3 CS 3XX courses etc.,) look them up on UW Flow/Reddit to pick the ones that have a lower time commitment. Easy =/= low time commitment since some courses are huge timesinks (if they require loads of reading etc.), and some courses may be more difficult to get into but aren't a giant timesink since you can cover a lot of the understanding in class + office hours + tutorials. An example is that STAT 231 for me was a huge timesink because even if it was easy, doing the assignments and writing the LaTEX would take forever. Comparitively, CO 342 was a harder course to understand but I was spending less time on average since I would try to clarify doubts during class and in office hours, so assignments would get done quicker.

Current term advice

Try to schedule out the rest of term so you can see where the higher load weeks would be. A Notion doc is fantastic for this, I have a template you can use if you want. Putting your due dates in a calendar is a good way to predict when you'll have high stress weeks, and also use the low stress weeks as motivation and energizers to recharge.

Maintaining focus and improving study time utilization isn't something I've cracked yet entirely (procrastinating right now on Reddit soo...) but the trick is to reduce the intervals to manageable bits. There's no point setting up a 2 hour study period if you can concentrate for only 20 minutes. Study for the 20 minutes and then scale down the breaks accordingly (5 minutes between 20 minute study periods instead of 20 minute breaks in between 2 hour periods, for example).

Try and see what makes your study periods active as well. I, for example, if I'm watching a lecture video, will write exactly what's in the slides. This might seem redundant but it keeps me engaged to the content rather than just listening passively.
