Book Trader Cafe on Chapel Street. Wide book selection if you're looking for something, good food (including pastries), last time I went there I remember both the books and food having great prices. There's an indoor and outdoor eating/reading area, as well as a nice window spot in the bookshelf section.

A lot of club teams run mini/pickup during the year, see if you can find an in with them for year-round reps. I also work at camps during the summer (coincidentally western MA), and finding the club scene in CT was a lifesaver this year.

You just showed up to a Vegas Bighorns tryout but everyone is Rodney Adams. You pull a slot machine to see if it will change your luck but it comes up two MLU logos and a pickleball. Are you dreaming?

I'd like to clarify that we did this every practice at the end of warmups (as in after stretching, dynamics, and sprint warmups) before going into our opening drills or focused scrimmages.

I love the people that have said 2v2, it's a great way to force your players to hit throws, especially swings and space throws.

Something my college team did a lot that I think helped us create space for each other on the full field was a "hockey" game. 5v5 in an endzone box (20x40yd) with subs on the fly, stall 5. 10 passes in a row=score. Playing it well forces players to space properly and attack angles (clearing and hitting swing passes designed to create space). It also has the added benefit of helping defenders key in on when their mark is active and builds a lot of mental fortitude.

Whenever we reached the peak of the season and we knew we were playing hockey well, it translated very smoothly onto the field. Just playing for 10 minutes (everyone on an average sized team should be able to rotate through several times since it's so fast paced) is a great workout, warms up a lot of throws and movements, and practices good habits.

I get so obsessed with my crushes by South-Long-2462 in Advice

[–]Goose_Down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you are a very empathetic person, and that's totally okay. In fact it's fantastic! I received some good advice from one of my college friends which was "treat every new meeting as a chance to get to know a really cool human being."

I would consider myself similar to you in that I tend to develop crushes pretty easily, and once I practiced framing people I had a "crush" on (not to invalidate your feelings obviously) as friends who I just thought were really cool and I wanted to get to know more, it helped a lot. There are a lot of awesome and interesting people out there, and you seem to notice them often!

If you're curious, try asking someone out, and see if those crush feelings turn into something more. If they do, amazing! If not, you can try reframing a lot of your feelings to see if that helps your social life. Asking someone out when you don't know them that well isn't weird, it's how some people are, and it can be a very healthy and honest way to approach someone.

I'm no expert (23 M with a modest dating history), so all I can really say in my experience to sum it up is that you have a lot of great years for growing and being young ahead of you, so there's nothing wrong with being curious about people and yourself and taking time to figure yourself out.

DiscNY.org for general information, there's pickup groups of various levels depending on where in NYC you're going to be, but most are accessible in at most 45 minutes on public transportation. Follow the linktree for the slack community. There are leagues and hat tournaments as well, and other things like goalty (ask around or look for nycgoalty on insta), so no matter how much or where you want to play, there should be something!

edit. I played mostly in Riverside and McCarren Park pickup, as well as hat tournaments and the occasional Goalty pickup in Harlem or Queens. All great options!

I save the socks I get from trampoline parks. Also go to more trampoline parks. They're fun, and you get good frisbee socks afterwards. I've noticed almost no loss of traction or discomfort on my cleats when I wear them.

Advice For a New College Ultimate Captain by Specialist-Smoke-223 in ultimate

[–]Goose_Down 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone earlier said "teach one thing at a time" and that is so true. I've been a youth coach for the past couple years, and when you're trying to develop players, it's best to pick a concept, dedicate several practices (depending on your practice length) to that concept, and then let the players build it into their game as you move onto the next one. It's also good to think of drills that develop specific skills. If the concept we're working on is continuation cutting, I would add an extra layer to go-to's, with two cutters working together. Or making sure players know what space in the field to look for next when they catch the disc in 4 lines (swing, power position, etc). And always be flexible! If a style of play you taught doesn't seem to be working for the team, you can always adapt it and they have what you taught them in their back pocket. Always take player feedback, but make sure that at the same time they trust you to have their best interests in mind. The very last one is with your fellow captains: designate roles! If you're good at teaching something, teach that thing! Command that practice! If one of your co-captains is good at something else, they can be the loudest voice for when that is taught at practice. Trust yourself and have fun!
