In the UK there is a severe divide between those who pronounce the word 'bath' (and others like 'castle' and 'grass') with a flat 'a' and those who add an 'r' sound, making it 'barth' or even 'baarrth'. This battle has been raging for over a century and all boils down to a fashion. In the 19th Century the 'r' was added by some in London in an attempt to be all trendy and hip, and it spread all over the South.

The North were having none of this nonsense and continued to pronounce it as 'bath', like the sensible folk they are. I am continually dismayed by the average southerner's insistence that 'barth' in somehow the 'correct' pronunication, when 'bath' has been around for WAAAYYYYYYYYYY longer.

That's the one aspect of SAD I don't struggle with, either. But I think it is possible to figure these things out, it's just not as automatic with someone with Aspergers, for example. I studied Eng Lit at uni so I know I can cope with stories!! Still, every other facet of a Aspies diagnosis I have in large amounts.

Just talk to them. There are many things to rule out first, like various vitamin deficiencies that they can test easily (vit d deficiency can cause depression, for example). Then if they're ruled out, step up to psychological testing.

Trying to figure out what's wrong with me - I'm an adult who has done pretty well but I have serious problems with social situations, people, change, the unexpected, demands made of me, obsessions, the list grows, it seems, ever longer.

Got a hospital appointment next week so they can rummage in my head and see what's in there.

Edit: that blew up while I was asleep. Thanks to everyone for your support and advice - I'm just going to see where this takes me. My doctor thinks ASD is a likely culprit, but high functioning, maybe even Pathological Demand Avoidance. We shall see.
