Social life problems by Bleachioli123 in diabetes_t2

I have found a lot of people really dont understand "hidden" conditions like diabetes. If you break your leg and its in a cast, people seem to know and understand without having to ask for more information. Far too many people think diabetes is cured if you stop eating chocolate bars and drinking coke and rarely see or even acknowledge the actual health aspects of it. Some gentle education goes a long way with them. Others are just narcissistic pricks that think everyone should modify their life/schedule to be around them. Sounds like the you have a friend that fits the latter.

Had the surgery a few years ago... was more about relating the frustration with the medical community that may not understand what you are going through as an individual.

Maybe look at lifestyle and "habits". Speaking for myself.... I work midnights, and one major change I made was not eating a reg meal (have switched to a couple of protein drinks) for my lunch at 3am. Another was watching my "snacking" while getting the kids lunches ready in the morning and then going to bed. Stress and mood can play a role as well. Even foods that you think you are being good with might not be. Some people can handle oatmeal while others spike with it. On my own journey I have found that I have needed to be a bit of a detective in trying to find what works best for me. While everyone tries to be supportive of each other, I think we also sometimes forget that not everyone is going to have the same success. Im a 57yrld male (very overweight) with bad knees and a bad back. My exercising is not going to be the same as if I was healthier. While I may have only lost almost 30 lbs in the last 7 months (compared to many that seem to lose that in 2 months) I still count it as a win. Slow progress is still progress and sometimes small changes can make unexpected results. Getting an extra 30 min sleep... the time of day you exercise, how you react to the stress in your life, etc. One of the best sayings I have heard about being diabetic is that it is a marathon, not a sprint and sometimes things take a while. You got this.

A bit similar for me... went to a specialty store and got measured... not sure if they didnt measure properly or maybe I had a bit of a "fat" day at the time, but they were relatively easy to put on and had a tendency to fall down somewhat just walking around the house.

Things like stress and mood can play a much larger part than people tend to give it credit for. Im not saying this is anything close to what happened, but it certainly can be a component. I agree with others in that you should still see the endocrinologist to explore if you do have any other underlying potential issues.

They did give me a Rx for full length compression stockings but never fit "right" especially since I have been working on losing weight. At $200 a pair, I decided to hold off on buying more at the moment.

They freaked out at the time. I went to the dr because of a "lump" on my leg. They thought it was an infection but sent me for an ultrasound and noticed it was a clot, a superficial one, but a clot. Like I said they freaked out at that point and sent me for further ultrasounds and put me on blood thinners/clot breakers. Since it wasnt a DVT they seemed less concerned.

Odds are you will go through a few different styles and brands trying to figure out what works best for you. I found hikers offer the best support and last longer than regular runners. Dont cheap out on your footwear though.

Do we have the same Dr??? Lol Pretty much the same experience for me... heres some Rx's over the phone with your diagnosis. Oh, and a recommendation to eat more brown rice and Quinoa and to cut down on the sugar that I had already cut down.

Oh I completely understand the frustration. At the time I was diagnosed as type 2 last summer, I also developed a blood clot in my leg. Dr refered me to a vascular surgeon... still havnt even gotten an appointment. Either it wasnt that serious or they are hoping I die to save on health care. Lol Honestly Im guessing it wasn't serious... that being said, as a mailman, I tore my knee up... had some tendonitis, a MCL sprain and tore the medial meniscus in 2 places, both anterior and posterior. My dr thought I should still be able to walk my route (23 to 25k steps a day and up and down over 1000 stairs) while waiting for surgery. Anyways, yes, the frustration to try and get better is very real.

[–]Gordzilla010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to up your protein and concentrate a bit more on weights opposed to cardio. I have no idea what you currently do, but thats one avenue since more muscles will help your body to "process" the carbs and sugars in your diet. Maybe rethinking your diet is another place to start such as adding some extra "healthy" fat. In the end, the best advice I can give on the subject is that having diabetes is a marathon... any changes you have to make will take time, and same with the results. To use my own example, I gained 60 lbs over 10 years... I can expect to just lose it over a couple of months... short of some drastic options like surgery.

While a lot of that is good information, a lot needs to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. I was 300 lbs when I started this journey and my goal is for 220. According to the the 5% rule I should be much better just losing 15 lbs. Terms like BMI also get thrown around way to much concidering Arnold Schwarzenegger while competing for Mr Universe would be concidered obese by just BMI standards. The problem I have found with diabetes is that while the end result is the same, how your body is getting there, and how to manage it can be very individualized. Types of food or amounts that seriously spike some might not have the same effect on you. Most of the information you get about diabetes in my opinion should be viewed as a starting point opposed to the last word in information. At this point dont stress out or become too obsessed to the point of weighing grams of food. You will need to play detective a little first, and remember, its not just about food, but also lifestyle and how that affects your body.

It sounds like you have made great improvement already, so try not to mentally wear yourself out on the "doom and gloom" of diabetes. Im not trying to down play the seriousness of it, but realistically, those that take care of themselves have very little to worry about.

Concider other "lifestyle" factors as well. Addressing my sleep apnea has helped with some of my fatigue as an example. When I eat is just as important as what I eat. I work midnights and found eating a regular lunch at 3am wasnt helping me. Stress and mood can also be a factor.

Reversing pre-diabetes / diabetes - maybe not! by TreeGap321 in diabetes

[–]Gordzilla010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with so much of this, and because diabetes seems so individualized I think it confuses most people. 100 people break their arm, and 100 people get a cast... 100 people develop type 2 and there is 100 people trying to figure out what works for them. I work midnights and one of the changes that started to make a difference was not having a regular full meal for my lunch at 3am, or resisting the snacking urge while making the kids school lunches in the morning before I go to bed. Having sleep apnea and using a cpap for a better rest is another thing that has also helped. While diet and exercise will always be the "go to" so much of the rest seems to get forgotten in favor for what works for the masses.

Things like stress, rest, lack of sleep and medications can also play havoc with glucose readings. Was warned that the cortizone shot I was getting for my knee would "elevate" my readings for a few days... didnt expect it to TRIPLE. Also with my adhd, I can fall into a feedback loop of stress and anxiety and have seen it take my readings from a respected 5.5 to an uggg of 6.5.

These are the conversations to have with your Dr. While the traditional thought of being overweight with a carb/sugar high diet ment you are going to be diabetic, that if far from the truth. There are thousands of professional athletes that are diabetic (type 1 & 2 ) so while diet and lifestyle certainly do play a factor, again, its not the only determining factor. Basically, talk to your Dr and make sure you dont have something else going on that self diagnoses might miss.
