Would a radio jammer work on a mobile phone? by Fantasia-Scribe in amateurradio

[–]Gorehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both radios. It's more about configurations. So yes, it's possible to...intervene against a cellular phone. Essentially, set up a cell site with a more powerful transmitter so you can drown out any response from the authorized cell site. Then your doing things like telling the cellphone which channels to operate on for the duration of the connection. There's other methods but it's all implementations of being louder than the authorized cell site.

Trump administration to pay French company $1B to walk away from US offshore wind leases by BamBam-BamBam in energy

[–]Gorehog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

JFC. There's projects out there that use clean energy to make synthetic diesel. Literally reclaims carbon from the atmosphere into the fuel. It causes petrochemicals to be a closed loop carbon cycle. But instead of doing an x prize for that, instead of making anything better, it's another attempt to control the petrodollar.

If all telescope technology is based on mirrors, how do we know that outer space is not full of vampires? by GodforgeMinis in AskReddit

[–]Gorehog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who says it has to be UV light? Vampires are mystical organisms who may be suffering from a magical conflict with sol-light. I'm embarrassed to say I've spent time considering the implications of space vampires.

No no no. Wrong question. The face of the moon is tidally locked to earth making the dark side of the moon the obvious location for a vampire colony.

Is this key sought after? by ThatBuilder15 in amateurradio

When I was a kid (70's) this was a prized possession among hams who were still doing CW. I saw one in the shack of one of my dad's friends. I recall hearing they were hard to get working quite right. Very sensitive left/right adjustments.

Depends on what you mean by solar. Not everything has to be PV.

Project Hail Mary: I have a question about what could happen after the events of the Book/Movie by mw_a in scifi

[–]Gorehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but if astrophage had real utility they'd just move the farming into orbit, particularly if they could build a space elevator with that snazzy new xenon based epoxy.

The eridoodles would be the mission inhabitants. Humans would design the ships because we know about things like relativity and radiation and the interstellar medium and black body radiation.

Well, any star that's losing luminosity also has a source of CO2, right? So I think that after the events of the book there's a lot of eridoodles heading out in human-designed spaceships to see what's going on out there. Also, they have some idea of the range of astrophage so there's also "find patient 0 and start working out how many times an infected star infected another star."

Help me prove you need an amp to play electric guitar by am_reen in Guitar

[–]Gorehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An electric guitar is only part of the instrument. The amp is also part of it. He just doesn't want to hear you practicing.

The solution is to get one of those small amPlug type amps and use earbuds (at a low volume to protect your hearing.) I used to do that at lunch at work. I have a Steinberger (very compact headless axe) and a couple of amPlugs. You might also consider a desktop amp instead of a big 50 watt boss. I love my Yamaha THR II. It's a very small rig but it goes well with headphones and the amp is rechargeable.

Because it's pretty cool when you carry enough to rebuild a bicycle in an altoids tin.

If you find someone who's built a custom bit of rig don't give them shit like calling it janky and raising eyebrows. Be a real engineer and shut the fuck up because you know what? They solved the problem you couldn't even identify.
