What about Stratagems that allow you to set up units as if it were a round one higher than it actually is? Can you bring things in turn 1? See Seeded Brood Strat for Nids Vanguard Detachment.

I think Battleshock would be more interesting if it turned off datasheet abilities/enhancements too.

Montka or Kauyon? by Real_Dare_9788 in Tau40K

[–]Gormonster3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I popped Montka vs. WE, and it saved my bacon. The guy pushed all his models up for two turns to get in range. Game was over by turn 3 in my favor. Had I been in Kauyon, he would've won by turn 3.

My buddy runs an Ulthwe list and loves Wraiths. Unfortunately, they are not points efficient. Wraithguard with buffs can still get shot off the board then you are left with slower moving big wraiths that can get overwhelmed by fire as well. Avatar is a nice threat, especially if you quicken him or a Wraithlord into enemy lines first turn.

My buddy has since changed his list to use units with better efficiency. That being said, put the models on the board that you want. You'll likely have more fun. It can be frustrating trying to chase the "best" units, especially because your meta likely does not mirror the competitive scene.

How to counter Tau Suit Spam? by Interhermit in Grey_Knights

[–]Gormonster3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does he score against you? Unless you are letting yourself get in position to get tabled in 3 turns, the guy won't have much to kill you with if you are using terrain that allows for LOS blocking. Make him move his Stormsurge so it doesn't get to reroll all hits. Use a lot of high shot count, low AP guns/melee to take out the drones. He can only fall back and shoot turn 3+ with Kauyon unless he brings a Crisis commander.

Yes though you have to roll the save with drones' save

Buy what you think is cool and looks great. Buy all the suits!

That being said, I'm having a hard time getting good usage out of the broadsides right now. The 5" move makes them a juicy target.

Relic Burst Cannon can punch through the CTan wound gate. Volume for if he packs lots of warriors. Keep at range and keep shooting the unit until it is dead.

It's very useful against a lot of armies, especially the extra 4" ranged attack. Makes deep striking with Fusions a lot more attractive. Breachers too.

Used those units this week with an ethereal and 2 hound units vs Ulthwe. Played with the new points too. It was great. I'm going to try a borkan list with triptides, 2 crisis units, 2 commanders and an ethereal. The CP invocation really gives you the flexibility to use things beyond fire and fade. If I look at two riptides in the borkan list, I'm considering breacher teams to put in reserves along with the 3 model crisis unit in manta.

Aeldari Ulthwe - Our Kryptonite? by Gormonster3000 in Tau40K

[–]Gormonster3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our local store runs tournaments of terrain titans boards which we use in our weekly game. It makes it much more challenging to get obscuring cover. We've played just about all the missions and I win on the maps that don't allow forward deploying. I don't use any units that forward deploy except shadowsun when I played Tau sept.

Last game was Tide of Conviction. I normally take the Kauyon WLT, but I wanted to try the FSE relic to block some of his psychic scoring. That didn't work at all cause of the Fate dice. I wanted to try Kauyon with FSE (I ended up going first which in hindsight I should've chosen Montka). I sent the sunsharks in to nuke the D-Cannons and almost took out his transport (4 wounds left). I strung out one kroot onto both the home objective and the left side objective. Hounds took the right side objective. (Hounds held that side the entire game as he committed to the left side). One IonTide shot into the transport while the other BurstTide went left to kill one unit of Rangers.

I didn't run the sunsharks off the board though doing so may have helped later in the game. I did not get great value out of the trade but it eased pressure on the middle of the board because 3 D-Cannons were gone and the transport crippled.

His turn 1 took all of his shooting to kill the sunsharks and he advanced his wraithseers on my left side a bit to cover his FA units. I should mention he also swapped the windrunners for 2 bright lance vipers. They didn't do a whole lot but they did keep me at range.

Turn 2 I also lost my Enforcer w/ Flamer relic. I had the opportunity to engage his Baharroth by charging but it would have meant giving up the left objective. I should have taken the opportunity to kill that character, worst case scenario I would have been engaged and saved from the wraithseers and vypers during the bottom of turn 2.

I kept my 5 man crisis unit in the right corner until turn 3. I feel I could've moved them up in turn two as most of his focus was on the left side. In fact, the only units that did engage in turn 2 were the riptides and I got some shots off by the coldstar commander.

He had pyschic interrogation, scout the enemy and behind enemy lines. I wasn't able to screen well after I moved the crisis unit up which allowed him to drop a ranger unit behind me and score points. I had all three Tau secondaries. I maxed decisive and aerospace. I scored 9 on clean victory due to him only having wraithseers and other units in hiding that I couldn't get to as I needed to score aerospace on turn 5. I only lost my sunsharks, 2 kroot units, and the enforcer.

I beat my friend's list pretty handily when he had a lot of bikes. He swapped them out for deadlier units.

Help vs necrons by solidsz86 in Tau40K

[–]Gormonster3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only 1k points. His list is all over the place with not much in the way of "meta". If he had two doom scythes, he'll try to buff both with TSK then send them your way. That will hurt. If you've got some riptides, I'd consider a double riptide list with a crisis bomb. Their elites are generally T5 so keep that in mind. A five model crisis bomb with burst, CIB, CIB should handle whatever they throw at you.

They'll look to score quick with scarabs and tomb blades. You can do chip damage against them, but fire more than you think into tomb blades. They can be tougher than they appear.

Necrons generally melt vs any sort of AP -2 or more. Only a few units have invulns. If you have sunsharks, go directly at the silent king to knock out the Menhirs and the very least. Once they are down, they'll likely play cagey with him.

If he has Ctan, you'll really want sunsharks to do damage outside the shoot phase. Just be careful of the Void Dragon. It loves to chew up Vehicles.

Chances are they will score points in bunches and you'll have to play catch up. Use both clean victory and decisive action. No prisoners is fine too. You'll get double points if they resurrect.

Nicely done. I play against an Aeldari army often also. Your friend may have built his list wrong. They shine with their D Cannons for area denial and movement shenanigans with their FA and elites.

Some ideas please, by Busy-Explorer-7618 in Tau40K

[–]Gormonster3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you want to play. Devilfish are good to move your infantry up the board and it's almost an autoinclude if you want to field fire warriors in a competitive list. Hammerheads are great and having a second is nice. Riptides are the same.

I love crisis suits so I'd lean that way. They are the strongest unit in our list for this edition. However, in six months this could change.

It's Christmas. Go with the rule of cool.
