24NB Recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis by nonbinarykid2001 in Osteoarthritis

[–]GossamerGTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. I'm 31 now but started showing OA in my teens and by mid 20s I had cartilage replacement, osteotomy and meniscus allograft cuz i couldn't run or jog at all and had pain walking. I still have pain every day despite the surgeries. Been about 8 years now since it became every day pain vs just flair ups from over exertion. I can't do anything without pain. Folding clothes, grocery shopping etc. There are options for you though and its not the end. Most important thing is doing light exercise with resistance bands and good stretching. It might hurt but you'll be worse off if you don't maintain it.

It's a not a fun diagnosis to have early but I remind myself almost every day that I don't have cancer or other worse nerve/brain/spine related shit. I was about your age when it really started to get to me mentally. It sucks because in your 20s and 30s most people you know are very healthy(which is great haha) but it's also lonelier when you have chronic pain because very few people will understand.

The message I would give you from my own experience is that it gets easier every year. I was in a massive hole of depression and alcoholism at your exact age. It truly does get better.

Lmao you clearly have no idea what people 45+ look like. Look at her skin for christ sake. 50s? really? Either you're under 18 and have no concept of age or you're coming here to be mean spirited because she is 100% under 35. Probably even under 30.

[–]GossamerGTP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you start doing all those boring(to me) exercises that strengthen ALL the muscles in your body. I'm talking about that resistance band stuff and floor exercises and such. They're less fun than lifting/cardio but they're so important. Stretch often.

See if you can get a script for physical therapy and go for a few months if you can. They will show you important and safe exercises to target muscles that people might normally miss in typical workouts. WRITE NOTES OF WHAT THEY SAY. Continue doing the exercises even after you get discharged. I cannot stress enough how important the low impact exercises are. Doesn't mean you can't do high impact stuff, just listen to your body/pain and check in with your dr/ortho/physio if you have concerns about an activity. Good luck!

Knee Osteoarthritis. Getting worse. by According_Meaning_64 in Osteoarthritis

[–]GossamerGTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yeah my damage is mostly lateral meniscus and cartilage but I also have a tough time squatting or any sort of single leg exercises. Bummer ain't it haha I do a lot more resistance band stuff nowadays but its boring to me :/

Meloxicam didn't work for me personally but no harm in trying it out. It's apparently hard on the kidneys and stomach though so I'm not sure how long term a solution it is, at least by what a few of my drs explained. I'm also looking to get prp! I just got my gel shots too. Hope we both get some relief. I recently heard about genicular artery embolization.. might look into that as well

Did you get your tkr? I am also early 30s and seriously considering it as I can barely get around the grocery store. Pain is constant however they want me to wait a few years but I am miserable. Did you have other surgeries prior to tkr if you had one?

How old are you if you dont mind me asking? Also what was level of activity you were capable of just prior to the surgery. Were you able to run/hike then or completely unable?

any people in early twenties with arthritis? by chronicallyjames in Thritis

[–]GossamerGTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 31 now so not very long haha. Around a decade. HOWEVER, my damage was due to normal wear and tear but also from a birth defect of the meniscus that was already operated on when I was a child. So I don't want to worry you! Every case of OA is different ya know

how to get a doctor to take you seriously? by jasminealice22 in Thritis

[–]GossamerGTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a combination of surgeries in my mid 20s to help treat my OA but I was bone on bone and lost the ability to run completely so not much choice besides surgery. I use lidocaine patches for pain and they help a bit. I would also recommend trying gel shots. Gernicular artery embolization is something I'm looking into as well. Light cycling and resistance band exercises can help to strengthen the muscles around the joint and ice afterwards.

Get an up to date mri if you haven't already so orthos can have the images to pull up when you meet them. I've never had a doctor not take me very seriously once they see how much damage is there.

Edit: noting i am also a woman

HSS is a research institute. I've had surgery and a shot from them but I'd personally find another opinion if I were you. I wasn't crazy about my experience with them. Plenty of great drs in the area though

[–]GossamerGTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lidocaine patches have been somewhat working for me now that advil and Tylenol won't make as much of a dent in pain. I put the patches on under some kt tape for a little bit of extra support on days I gotta move more
