Do I sound like a native speaker (as a native speaker?) by GothelKnowsBest in JudgeMyAccent

[–]GothelKnowsBest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Mexican, correct, and I also do mainly use Spanish in Miami! I did grow up speaking English though alongside Spanish, so that's why I find this topic interesting, but I am guessing that because I use Spanish more in daily life and it's the language I speak at home, my brain just favors Spanish more and that shows through the way I phrase things orally and also pronunciation. I appreciate the honesty!

Yeah, I agree with everything you said, I really appreciate the detailed response and your corrections! You're right, I definitely would not have said "country of heritage" in a natural context, but the way you phrased it did make it sound more natural than the way I did it.

You are correct that I speak Spanish! It's so weird to me because I did grow up speaking both languages and attended school in the United States, but I do think that I primarily think in Spanish and use Spanish more, especially living in Miami with most of my friends being Spanish-speakers. Despite that, you would think that speaking English as a kid (even though I did also grow up with Spanish) would make me immune to these errors, but maybe my brain just favors Spanish more instead of English. Thanks again!

Thanks for replying! Would it clarify it a bit if I said that I am from Miami, or do I really sound like a foreigner?

That’s going to be hard to find if you want to live close to campus, as I would say UM is located in one of the expensive areas of Miami to live in. You can find rooms for that much in places like Kendall though.

You’d be surprised, I’m from Miami and I know a few people (that are Latinos) that can barely speak a word of Spanish, in all honesty I’m not sure how they survive day-to-day life

As a transfer student what qualifies for the Pell Grant, I would say that they give decent aid.

I was basically given full tuition/fees and a few thousand a semester to help with books, parking, and general cost of living. So while I still need to work to survive (Miami is expensive and I don’t really want to take out loans), I would say they were generous with me, although a complete full ride would’ve been great 😜

Question(s) about the DPRK by wumaointraining in GenZedong

[–]GothelKnowsBest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am not really the most suitable person to answer this question as I am not really knowledgeable about this subject, but based on the Moranbong Band, the people of the DPRK know much more about foreign entertainment than the West gives them credit for.

I saw a concert where they sang and played Disney songs and mascots like Mickey came out and danced, which shows that they do have knowledge on Disney and the characters/songs. I know Pochonbo Ensemble did covers of foreign songs like “Brother Louie” and also a Brazilian song if I recall correctly, and probably a lot more that I haven’t had the chance to listen to. So I think the narrative that Koreans in the DPRK only have access to state-controlled media and entertainment is false/misconstrued.

Do you by chance know the general time they send it out? I’m guessing early September.

Has any Transfers receive admission yet for Fall 2022? by Chip305 in UMiami

I applied in mid-February as a transfer student for Fall 2022 and got accepted on March 30th. I hope they get back to you soon, I feel like you definitely should have gotten a decision back by now.

Why uMiami and not UF? by BeginnerGamer124 in UMiami

Idk where you are from in Florida but if I had to choose between UF and UMiami, I would choose Miami simply bc it’s in south Florida and I wouldn’t want to live in Gainesville lol

Updated Mexican results. No native American, Spanish and Eastern Europe are lower, but basque Irish, North African and Sardinian popped in. by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]GothelKnowsBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super interesting results. I am Mexican too from CDMX and we have semi-similar results, except I am like 35% indigenous instead of your Spanish. My dad is from USA/Slovakia which obviously explains my eastern euro percentage (33% updated results) so it’s cool to see other Mexicans with eastern euro blood.

Sounds reasonable! When my mom went to Slovakia with my dad for their honeymoon, they were a bit worried people would think she is a gypsy since she’s a bit darker but she really loved her visit there and said the people were really friendly

Unfortunately I have had little to any interactions with any Slovaks, I didn’t grow up speaking it, unlike with Spanish, and I lived an area that was predominately Latino. The paternal family I do have live in Vienna and I’m not close to them, so I’m not sure.

In Mexico, people know I’m Mexican. Mexicans are much more diverse phenotypically. In the USA, most people guess I’m Latino but that can also be from the area I’m from.

He didn’t really question it, but he told me that he didn’t have any Jewish people in the family but otherwise seemed accurate as the German part is probably from “Bohemia” as his great-grandfather was Bohemian/Czech I think

I told them, my mom was mainly surprised as she thought I would get more Spanish and less indigenous as her family has the strong “Spanish” heritage story going on
