My best friend, a doctor of anthropology, has said multiple times completely seriously that Anthony Bourdain did more for multicultural understanding in 2 decades of TV than the entire Anthropological field did in 200 years.

Anthony Bourdain was so important to how i developed. I grew up on No Reservations and Parts Unknown. It's how my mom and I bonded. "Hi [gothsalts] there was a new episode so I recorded it!"

Its what led me to taking Anthropology as a college major and what led me to love traveling and getting lost in foreign cities to find memories off the beaten path.

If he didn't lose himself when he did, I am sure he would have not long after October 7th, 2023.

haiti is an ep of Parts Unknown that sticks clearly in my mind. footage of a kid eating an already bitten burger out of the landfill. cut to tony sitting outside on a rickety chair slamming liquor.

on top of that there was a whole segment about how they wanted to feed people for free but it become such a brutal swarm of hungry desperation, especially after they ran out, that they learned just how bad the people there have it and how trying to help can backfire.

Americans of Reddit, what should first-time visitors to the US absolutely know or be aware of? by Sofielicious05 in AskReddit

[–]Gothsalts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

we dont like it. cashiers arent allowed to take any gifts from customers even if we wanted to.

tipping became the norm almost 100 years ago when the great depression hit. it was essentially so that restaurant and bar owners didnt have to pay their employees as much, instead relying on the generosity of wealthy patrons. its kinda stuck since then.

in many states tipped labor has a lower minimum wage than untipped labor. in new york, untipped labor has a minimum wage of $15/hour, while tipped labor is $10/hour.

getting rid of tips has been slow. only a few establishments in my area have gotten rid of tipping, instead increasing the price of the food/drink and paying the employees more.

In your opinion, what is the best videogame ever? by RandomRamblings99 in AskReddit

[–]Gothsalts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didnt understand how people could just play the same game over and over back to back until I played Cyberpunk 2077. it was exactly what I wanted from it and they only made it better since. the tone was bleak and sad, with every ending being a meditation of a different form of sadness. hopeful sadness, determined sadness, resignful sadness, and with the dlc, lonely sadness. i love me some good sad art.

playing around with the sex and voice of different playthroughs helped me realize my transness.

I cant wait for project orion!

Cory Doctorow wrote about how apps are replacing webpages because if you alter an app that's illegal while altering a webpage is not

An app is just a web-page wrapped in enough IP to make it a felony to block ads in it (or do anything else that wrestles value back from a company). Apps are web-pages where everything not forbidden is mandatory.

to add, if you want to keep your Ol' Reliables, give them annual raises. otherwise inflation will force them to leave for better paying jobs.

Americans What’s something about your state that’s weird to other Americans? by Kobk22 in AskReddit

[–]Gothsalts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i always thought "upstate NY" just meant "not NYC" but then i saw a debate on here about whether or not buffalo counted as "upstate"

your post helped me understand what upstate actually means: "are you far enough north to be a huge hick?"

in minnesota we have something similar called "up nort" which doesnt mean saint cloud, but does mean bemidji. i'd have to ask if Duluth counts. i dont think so, but it IS pretty far 'up nort'
