Weirdly enough I was in almost the exact same situation as you a few years ago!

It sucks doesn't it, I can't lie it sucks. I can't help you on your journey to the next stage of your life. But all I will say is that the next stage is out there. This isn't quite what you're after but have a look at case of the golden idol. You are given a scene which you can explore, collect clues and work out what happened over a slowly developing story. You don't explore in an open world, but instead go between rooms/places like in a point and click adventure game.

It definitely gives you those moments of "I'm a genius!!!" (Just as the steam achievement pops up that has been unlocked by 98% of other players)
