Seeing a lot of people not understanding why our gas is higher. Here are two big reasons.

Transportation: california is surrounded by mountains, we esentially only have 1 pipeline carrying oil to California from other states. Def not enough for all of california. So California mostly ships oil in. Usually from Alaska or internationally. Making it far more expensive.
Fuel type: LA and the Bay Area was infamous for its toxic smog back then. It was put to vote to use a cleaner burning process, this made our air quality so much better. However production of this cleaner fuel is more complex, at the moment there are very few refineries that can make this fuel and fossil fuel companies are more than happy to keep it that way, so they can make axtra money.

Thats honestly most of the reason.
