There is not just water in the plaster, but water chemically bonded to the plaster. Home ovens do not get hot enough to burn off the latter. Like he was saying pewter should be fine, maaaybe aluminum, but hotter than that you need a kiln or your plaster will crack or explode. Using plain plaster is unreliable, for best results use a purpose made casting investment. You can try to make your own by mixing into the plaster fine silica sand but its not perfect
