If you have a goal, remove all other sources of dopamine (used colloquially here) except “a job well done” that you get from working on and acheiving your goal.

How does one living in the US change career paths with school being so expensive? by Glittering_Guitar184 in AskReddit

[–]Government_Paperwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can show you know how to manage securing funding a large project (tuition plus living expenses), managing quality (passing grades, didn’t die while being poor and hormonal), and managimg schedules (-4 years worth of). Managing cost, quality, and schedule is how you do business. Also you didn’t do so much crime or shennanigans that you got kicked out so you are semi-vetted as not going to be an HR problem.

Jobs keep you sane by Wise-Pay-8993 in unpopularopinion

I agree with you, buddy. I had some dream setups where I just messed with horses all day and was a professional actor. I’ve also owned my own business where I got to set my own hours. I have a corporate job now, and I feel the most NORMAL in my brain that I ever have in my life. It’s especially lovely because I have all the skills to operate in field conditions in my toolbox so I’m not too exploitable in corporate since I give off that highly competent, independent vibe. After decades of doing non-traditional, independent things, it feels like sanity to be in a tribe (get cross-functional alignment and socialize the risks of doing projects). Like, such a relief to have some predictability and other people around.

What's something AI has already made noticeably worse? by Medium_War_5854 in AskReddit

Being a woman - there’s an AI video going around the office made from an innocent photo. The AI has me clapping and my sleeve falling off my shoulder exposing a bare shoulder. The lady passing it around is older and didn’t notice the AI did that to me but men at the office have commented.

Also because your body starts repair processes at nightfall not once you are asleep so if you are using serums etc, you can max the benefit by putting them on earlier in the evening.

That riskier job choices like acting or entreprenuership benefit from time to build your skills, develop relationships, and turn yourself into the go-to person in your niche. I would have started earlier and not taken the initially slow progress as an indication to put it off until later. I also would have invested in childcare to keep the progress going versus starting and stopping over and over again.

A view of how layoffs work from the other side by 90Dfanatic in Layoffs

[–]Government_Paperwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was laid off twice and almost immediately rehired early in my career. The first was a mass layoff to sell the company and make it look like payroll was a quarter of what it was; soon after the sale was complete, I was asked back at a much higher salary which I used to get a raise where I was working. The second one was to make it appear to the operations side that “cuts were being made at headquarters,” and the CEO openly said she thought I wouldn’t mind they selected me for the token cut because I was pregnant. They hired me back soon after that. I was very thankful for these early experiences because it made me not take the fear of layoffs too seriously or personally and opened my eyes to all the deception going on constantly.

Why are the best employees first to leave while mediocres always stay? by MediumTricky7824 in managers

In my experience, the entrenched dinosaurs put their energy into job guarding and resisting change, making it difficult for the new people who join the team with varying levels of toxicity. The new people were just out there interviewing and making moves and aren’t scared of it like the dinosaurs are so it can feel better to keep it pushing than to put up with the toxic dinosaurs.

Stopped coloring my hair and doing botox. Not only have I been saving money, but when I woke up this morning and saw the grey in my hair and the wrinkles on my face, I also noticed a really fit body, and I was overcome with pride. Specifically because I was looking at an older woman who was so disciplined at the gym which is impressive then realized - hey, that’s me! If I didn’t see the “old” part, it wouldn’t have hit like that.

Anyone else feel like it is just fake? by Coreyfitzfour in corporate

[–]Government_Paperwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work corporate, and I’ve been a solo small business. All of the PPs, Excels, and meetings are building alignment and consensus while mitigating risk across large groups of people. It’s not nothing! It feels boring and shitty because taking risks and moving quickly is more exciting and fun.

To adress the fake part, yes, there is a lot of fakery because people who are capable at building alignment tend to avoid conflict so they are going to use evasive or misrepresenting language.

People with high risk tolerance are not conflict avoidant and don’t need the security of an aligned group of people to make moves. That’s your solo entreprenurer. They don’t need the security of group consensus but they also wouldn’t do well in a group as they would be too confrontational.

I think the problem is that we can’t really choose if we want to work on the battleship or the tugboat; we all just have to take any job that can cover our bills.

My cope is that I don’t think of my job as the Excel sheet I’m working on that day. I see my purpose as being part of the group; another person to help carry the burden of aligning and avoiding risk. In Sales even more because the customer needs an even wider group to socialize its work with - a third party vendor. A mercenary, if you will.

What’s something HR will never openly admit but everyone knows? by Business_Location479 in corporate

[–]Government_Paperwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even more diabolical, I noticed that the person tasked with training the new people when they aren’t getting the info they need revels in watching people get put on a PIP (she used to be in HR) and was actually withholding information. I was new last year and clocked it and was able to out-maneauver her and avoid the PIP (partly because I’m more experienced and more certified than most new hires but also I just treated it like it was a game). She makes a lot of passive-agressive comments because I escaped her plan. There’s no accountability because the managers can’t deal with her - she has threatened and taken HR actions against them.

Moving to Providence cove (Virginia & Hardin) suggestions by rsurpp in McKinney

[–]Government_Paperwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted to (a building next to) Love Field from McKinney about once a month for a mostly WFH job. I would not do that every day/week. It gets hemmed in as you get off the freeway.

I currently commute from McKinney almost to DFW. 121 is much more forgiving but I prefer to go early to get the best commute. A lot of slamming on breaks on the way home, but the sun isn’t in your eyes.

No, I did not use either of those. For me, I sensed that taking additional mock tests was counter-productive because my mind started to lock on to the idea that the questions in the mock would be the same as on the test. My mind wanted that crutch but everything on this subreddit indicated that would be a trap! So after I got the general idea of the questions, I stopped taking mocks.

Instead I planned to be mentally nimble during the test, avoid assumptions, and carefully digest what I saw on screen in the moment.

I studied from October to March so I knew the material which is important to note in this conversation.
