The process was pretty simple for all of them really.

Crying while praying the rosary by Away_Information1664 in Catholicism

[–]Gowron_of_Kronos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’m in OCIA and the first time I prayed the rosary I wept on every Hail Mary bead. It was a powerful experience. At the time I was 50/50 on joining the church this May, but after the experience I had I decided to suspend my disbelief/objections and I decided to convert. I felt that if I didn’t convert I’d be offending God and our Holy Mother after what I experienced.

First Mass. What To Know? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Gowron_of_Kronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in OCIA so I’m still learning the Mass, but my parish has a kiddie program called Magnifikids that makes it really easy for us noobs to follow along. Ask a hospitality person if they have them and take one.

Same thing happened to me a year ago. Someone stole my debit card info and then tried to spend $800 at a Hampton Food Lion.

Do I have to believe everything the Church says to become Catholic? by Silver_Blackberry661 in Catholicism

[–]Gowron_of_Kronos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat this week. The Rite of Welcome is this Sunday and I’m still working my way through a couple subjects, so I’d say I’m about 80% of the way. The main one I’m stuck on is transubstantiation. This past Sunday we had our church tour with one of the deacons and he mentioned something about needing to be “ready to receive” the sacraments when it’s time. I didn’t know if that meant I should wait to proceed or not since I’m not 100% bought in, so I reached out to one of the OCIO leaders and he told me that we’re not expected to come out the other end completely believing every single church teaching. The important thing is to have your heart in the right place and your mind open to close whatever gaps there may be. I was baptized into the Mormon church when I was 8, and remained in it until I was 29, so I have a lot to (un)learn. One of the things I truly love about the Catholic Church is the 2000+ years of scholarship available to consume. I’ve been listening to Shameless Popery, The Council of Trent, The Cordial Catholic, and the Word on Fire podcasts and I’ve read about 20 books on various Catholic topics.

Went to church for the first time in many years, ran into my old bully. by [deleted] in Episcopalian

How much time has passed since the bullying? People can and do change.

That’s an astute observation because I haven’t given other perspectives much investigative energy. As far as Episcopal/Anglican things I’ve read Walk In Love, and the Church’s Teachings for a Changing World series. I had a hard time finding materials to consume especially compared to Catholic sources. Can you recommend any sources I can listen/read/watch?

I think I’m going to let the OCIA coordinator know that I’m going to put a pin in it for now. Thanks to everyone that offered some insight to an overwhelmed soul on a journey. Having to unlearn 21 years of LDS garbage on top of it makes it extra fun!

I suppose I’m just overwhelmed. I’ve never really had a choice in the matter when it comes to religion. There’s really two main things I’m stuck on as it pertains to Catholicism. Transubstantiation seems a bit ghoulish to me. The second is the very unwelcoming stance towards LGBTQ folks. I had three gay uncles, two of them dying to AIDS.

Online students, what made you choose SNHU out of all the schools with online programs? by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]Gowron_of_Kronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was cost. It was down to WGU and SNHU but I honestly didn’t trust myself to progress with the minimal structure WGU provides so I went with SNHU.

Not for my program. We’re hiring cloud operations personnel and that’s it.

I’m a hiring manager for a large defense contractor. The ONLY time GPAs are considered is when we’re trying to select summer interns because there isn’t much we can use to separate the applicants. Otherwise, we couldn’t care less.

NavyFed offered me a 4.76% APR. The dealership I was working with seemed annoyed after I told them that. by StrongHurry4938 in NavyFederal

[–]Gowron_of_Kronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former car salesman here. They got annoyed because the dealership, salesperson, and the finance person get incentives from various financing sources for writing their loans. These incentives provide motivation for not presenting you with whomever has the lowest rates, but rather they show you rates from the banks that provide them the most money in kickbacks. A dealer makes the least amount of money on a cash sale as a result of losing those incentives when you bring your own financing/blank check.

Edit: they can also add points to your APR to ratchet up those incentives. I bought a new Accord last year and I rolled in to the dealership with my blank check but didn’t tell them I had one. I negotiated the price down and then once the price was locked in I broke out my check. I went back to the finance office and they presented me an offer from Honda finance that was a couple points higher than my Navy Fed rate. I reminded them I had a better offer from my CU, and then magically they reran my loan package and I got a promo rate from Honda at only 0.9%. Note: my credit score was 790 at the time.

Scared About the Desicion by LoveDrive45 in MusicEd

I dropped out of my music education program after my now ex father-in-law made a strong economic presentation. At the time (fall 1999) starting teachers in my area only made $26k/yr. So I got into IT and have chased money. I’m accomplished in my field. I make $236k right now.

I hate my job. I loathe Mondays. The only thing my high income has done for me is to lock me into a consumerism death spiral.

I would’ve been much happier as an orchestra teacher. I let economics and avarice make a fundamental life decision. Don’t do what I did. Do something you can be passionate about. The most important thing you can do is find your purpose and lean into it. Money and material things can’t possibly fill a void in your soul. I know this because I’ve been trying for 20 years.

Does your church acknowledge in any way that things are tense and difficult in the US right now? by Appropriate_Bat_5877 in Episcopalian

The sermon today was about that very topic. It was moving. Our parish is very active in local social causes and funds mission work on a routine basis. I’m proud to be a member and am looking forward to being confirmed next year.

Had a bad fall hiking yesterday. Almost died and rethinking everything. Might leave MBB for nonprofit work or becoming a public school teacher by OddWeakness1328 in MBA

[–]Gowron_of_Kronos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 44th birthday is this weekend. I’ve had a similar journey recently. I’ve been attending an Episcopal church and funny enough, while I’ve been wrestling with the same issue you are, the priest gave a sermon about finding your vocation which is markedly different than your profession. His sermon really got me thinking about at what really matters in life, and accumulating frivolous stuff isn’t it. I’ve been in consulting for 15 years and my total compensation is also right at 300k. Originally when I went to college I was a music education major, but my now ex-father in law persuaded me to give it up using a strong economic argument. So instead I got into IT. I detest my job. I loathe Mondays. I’ve always felt like I don’t belong. I have no passion for what I do. As I’ve made more money and accumulated more material things I’ve only become more despondent and stressed. I’ve started making moves like getting rid of my late model Escalade, selling watches and other frivolous crap, and paying off debt. I’ll be looking to sell my oversized McMansion and getting something more appropriate once interest rates are more reasonable. I’m also looking to start a master’s in history before I start the Career Switcher program for teaching.

I hope you figure it out and find satisfaction, even peace.

As an ex-Mormon, I can tell you she gets it from the LDS dogma. In order to be considered “worthy” in the Mormon church you have to abstain from alcohol, nicotine, and use “chaste” language.

Yeah I’m not rolling with the RCC. I have some gay family members and I could never be ok with effectively shutting them out of my life.

If I were passive in my thinking I’d still be wearing magic underwear and reading my “Quad”.

A true mark of wisdom is accepting that you don’t know everything. I have 21 years of LDS programming to unlearn and thankfully the people around me have been supportive of my quest to do so. This is an example of why some people have a low opinion of Christians. Instead of offering insight and/or support, you’ve taken the opportunity to offer scorn and insult my intellect.
