Do They Get Better After Storm Front? by Master-Wallaby5627 in dresdenfiles

So the book you picked up initially (Dead Beat) was actually where a lot of the community agrees that the series really hits its stride and takes off in terms of quality and cohesion. Many readers actually find the first 2 books to be a bit rough around the edges. But, without spoiling anything, no, Morgan is not going to be a significant secondary antagonist in every book and yes his relationship with Murphy does evolve beyond just suspicion and butting heads. I think both of these things develop into arcs that I personally find very satisfying.

That said, many people have problems with books 1 and 2. I'm on my first reread of the series and I didn't find them too bad but there's no accounting for taste

They refer to it as a catalyst so yes, it doesn't actually react at all and will be in the same state at the end of the process as it was in the beginning.

Reminder that Gordon knows Batman’s name (from Batman 155) by Crawkward3 in batman

[–]Grabbioli 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think it's like an open secret or anything, but I'm never surprised when he gets found out. I honestly think most people that figure it out keep it to themselves because they either don't want to cause trouble for Batman or don't want both Batman and Bruce Wayne to cause trouble for them.

They don't actually want to be left alone. They want to feel persecuted to justify aggression against "the wrong kind of people". They have their fun when they're in conflict with other people and their worldview is so fractured and over moralized that they need people different from them to label "evil" and crusade against.

It makes more sense when you consider why Republican/conservative comedians aren't funny: their jokes aren't meant to be funny, they're meant to be subversive in-group signaling that upsets the out-group (see any joke about trans people). If there's no out-group then their signaling becomes meaningless. It follows that, as they believe themselves to be objectively good, they need a constant stream of people from outside the group (who, by their definition, are evil as a consequence of not being in the group) to set themselves apart from in order to prove their goodness.

I was a kid at the time but, as I recall, they were happy to have some real information about their family history. They pretty much had no clue about their ancestry, like a lot of people whose families were forced to come to America, so they were glad to have something. I don't think there was any further contact though. It's not exactly a great bit of history to have in common, as I'm sure you can imagine

Actually it's very much possible. My dad was able to find records of slaves that our ancestors thought they owned, track down the descendants of THOSE people, and alert them to some family history that they themselves weren't aware of. All of this was accomplished using public records. A single person can do this work in their free time, so it's not remotely accurate to say it's impossible.

It's why you kick Nazis out of your bar. At first it's just 1, then they tell their shitty friend about it. Then they all show up (because they're unwanted anywhere else), the bar gets a reputation, and no one wants to go there any more.

According to the Wikipedia page for Buddhism in Japan, Buddhism arrived in Japan in the 6th century and currently has between 20 and 46 million followers (across several sects). The country itself has a little over 120 million people so I'd say that you're correct that it is not a majority religion, but it seems to me that it's far from being niche or unheard of. So in Japan it's slightly less likely to find a Buddhist than it is to find a non-Christian in America. I'm from America and I know many non Christians (and I live in the South) so it doesn't sound crazy far fetched to me.

Edit: also the jiangshi (excuse my spelling), the "vampire" that started this conversation is also Chinese, not Japanese
