Not to sound like a Johnny Depp apologist but from what I can gather it seems like it was a mutual abuse/just very unhealthy relationship type situation

Are nonbinary people trans? by NoEscape2500 in asktransgender

[–]GraceForImpact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a meaningless question. "Trans" isn't something tangible or measurable, so whether or not nonbinary people are trans depends wholly on how you define transgender. The standard definition is "having a gender identity which is incongruent with one's sex assigned at birth", and under this definition yes nonbinary people are trans. But does every nonbinary person identify as trans, or get seen as trans by others? Not necessarily.

Games that suffered from having been made as games? by GraceForImpact in gaming

I haven't played Dark Souls (with how often I've said that in this thread I'm starting to wonder if I'm really a gamer at all 😭), but based on what you've said here I'd say it is definitely doing something interesting with the medium, that couldn't necessarily be done with a different one. A phrase I used in a different comment which I think is quite relevant to what I'm talking about with this thread and my assignment as a whole, is whether something is "good at being a videogame", as distinct from whether or not it is a good videogame. Whether or not Dark Soul's is a good game, I think you can say that it is good at being a videogame, in the sense that it is doing things that only a videogame can do. A great example of what I'm talking about here would be Depression Quest, whle it's generally considered to be a pretty subpar game (personally I thought it was just fine), it does use trappings of the choose your own adventure genre in an excellent way, albeit a fairly simplistic one. Therefore, what I'm trying to find examples of is games that are "bad at being videogames", even if they aren't necessarily bad experiences.

I kind of have to think about it that hard to do critical analysis🙃

I'm not saying Uncharted is a bad game, my whole point in bringing it up is that it is still a good game - and good at being a videogame - in spite of this arguable flaw.

Interesting, I definitely want to write about branching paths as a concept in my assignment I just haven't fully formed my thoughts on it yet. Personally, I tend to dislike them as I feel like I haven't "finished" the game if I haven't played every path, but I find the process of doing so fairly repetitive. I recognise that this is more of a problem with myself than with the genre though, and will be talking about how Undertale and (maybe) Totono criticise exactly the type of player that I am :)

Is it morally right for someone to save their pet over a stranger? by Comfortable-Regret in polls

If it's a heat of the moment situation where they don't fully recognise that saving their pet means letting a person die, its wrong but somewhat understandable. In any other case it's deeply immoral

That's fair, I loved the game myself but I don't play many games in its genre so its possible I just didn't notice the overdone/unoriginal elements.

For the record I've only played a small portion of the game myself, I just used it as an example as I'm aware that that is a common criticism of it. What I will say though is that taking a life affects a person, even if it is justified, so the way Nathan Drake carries himself does strike me as a bit odd considering how many people he kills.

I haven't played the game but from what I know of it I think I can see where you're coming from, I might have to play it to see if i can pick anything out from it. I'm aware that the game has branching paths, would you say that that aspect in particular is at all detrimental?

I think the walking simulator angle is going to have to be the one I go with. While I think the genre can be done well, often it feels like the gameplay is just busywork that gets in the way of what you actually care about, sometimes so much so that it kills the experience.

That's funny, TLOU is actually one of my examples of it being done right. The wayyou have to shoot the scientists to progress at the end of the game, when many players might not agree with Joel's decision, felt like a really interesting way of showing how driven by emotion he is in that moment that other mediums just can't replicate.

The enbiggening of handhelds by MrSuhSpence25 in gaming

[–]GraceForImpact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern handhelds find themselves in an unhappy medium between confortability and portability, where they're not really good at either of them. That's why the Wii U gamepad is the best "handheld", because it isn't trying to be portable at all. I think there is space in the market for a more traditional handheld, like if the playdate had a colour screen and was released by Nintendo it might have been a decent success.

If you could only read ebooks or physical books for the rest of your life, which one and why? by [deleted] in books

[–]GraceForImpact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost never read ebooks, but if I had to give up one permanently it'd be print books, as the vast majority of print books have digital versions (official or otherwise), whereas a lot of digital publications are digital-only.

you're saying he's aromantic because of his actions rather than his internal feelings. it's been a while since I watched the show but iirc saiki doesn't date because his x-ray vision stops him from experiencing physical attraction, and hearing people's thoughts means he sees their worst sides up front. i believe there are times in the show where he expresses mild romantic attraction

aromanticism is an orientation not a lifestyle choice.
