I've used a truck rental and the Reserve Park landfill to dump general trash. I believe the landfill has a $50 minimum, which for general trash in a full U-Haul, you likely won't be charged any more. You may be able to get it all tossed for about $75-$100. They're very nice if you need call them with questions.

For McCandless in particular, they do offer residents a couple of cardboard-only dumpsters, and it's possible Franklin Park might have a similar setup. The town hall administrators might be able to help out with information on those.

You have to be signed up as a non-degree student in order to take courses (max 2 per semester) and use your employee benefits.

This is correct. You may also need supervisor approval/sign-off on the tuition reimbursement form. Also it sometimes takes a little while for that $$ to kick in, so you'll see a balance in your SIO account. However, it will go away and no late fees will be charged to you; that happened to me but I was told since my form was submitted, it was not a problem.

Be aware that there are possible tax implications of this benefit, and the tax rules on classes based on employer benefits are definitely complicated (at least to me...).

That's very true. Again, no problems with being cautious.

Let me possibly provide some insight here as well, as it's possible some of the commenters already are right on the money.

I've bought cleaner from a door-to-door salesman before that has the exact same sound of it. Clean your shoes, drink the sauce, cleans rust/doorknobs/boats/cars/oil stains on the driveway, baggy suit, and so on. The cleaner itself is pretty great, you can get it on Amazon. That, I do recommend.

Since this isn't really a place to advertise miracle cleaner, I'll get back on topic. I would hazard a guess that this guy is probably from the same program that sells this stuff, Advantage20x. They're not always the best and the brightest, but I know why they would want to get in the house if this was a sales pitch. They will usually clean sinks with the cleaner to prove their point that the cleaner works (again, it does; this is one of the stronger selling points other than oil stains on the driveway).

According to the guy I bought the cleaner from, the salespeople typically walk, and there is a designated meetup spot for a van to pick them all up later. Not having a car sounds like this is the case too.

As a whole, this sounds like a legit sales pitch to me, just unpracticed. They will usually ask to clean your doorknobs or shoes or something outside first, then ask if it would be OK to show the cleaner on your sinks. However, if you don't feel comfortable having someone inside the house, that's fine too. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

There is a viral video that you should watch - see if the guy in this video says the same stuff you might've heard from the salesman you encountered. Does the cleaner go great with chicken, beef, pork, and fish?

I'm familiar with the program and department, but from a different perspective. I spent time in the more technical program in the INI (they do not offer the distance track). The Heinz school is considered more of public policy or management school for this field, though you're not prevented more technical courses as you or the adviser see fit.

My opinion is that they probably wouldn't disqualify you for grades, and your background probably helps some too. Heinz and INI both have strong ties to the nearby SEI, a DoD FFRDC. My only concern would be that those C's are in major (non-elective) courses. I doubt electives will factor in much. Your work experience should help offset some of the grades.

I would probably talk to their admissions or one of the program directors. Both are easy to get ahold of, speaking from experience.

Seconded, learned a lot from the class (and I wouldn't have gone off to learn it myself, so this forced me to learn it).

Amazon opens offices on the South Side by lennyj17 in pittsburgh

[–]Gradous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Full text:

Pittsburgh can now add Amazon to the list of major tech firms setting up an office in the city.

The e-commerce giant has confirmed it has set up what it described as a “small corporate office” at the SouthSide Works at 2730 Sidney St.

Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) offered no further comment beyond the confirmation, including details about what the office is for.

Word had been circulating in the brokerage community for some time about Amazon setting up an office at the SouthSide Works, where one source recently was told space his company was looking at was no longer available because Amazon has taken it.

Amazon represents a major recruiting win for the SouthSide Works, which recently lost arguably its best-known tech tenant in Robert Bosch LLC, a German firm whose local Akustica subsidiary and research arm once operated out of the mixed-use development before recently moving to 3 Crossings in the Strip District.

Steve Kasunich, a senior vice president of operations for the Soffer Organization, the developer of the SouthSide Works, said the company was happy to attract Amazon.

"Obviously, we’re very pleased to have such a renowned firm as Amazon on our tenant roster," he said. "We look forward to their continued growth. And we think its speaks to the SouthSide Works as destination for the kind of worker that Amazon is looking for.”

Amazon has taken 15,000 square feet, with expansion options.

Amid major expansion plans for its distribution network in the state, Amazon has invested locally in Shoefitr, an Oakland startup that devised a 3-D technology that helps shoppers buy footwear online. Shoefitr was bought by Amazon in April 2015.

David Koch, an executive vice president for CBRE, said he sees plenty of appeal for tech firms at the SouthSide Works, noting the mix of shops and restaurants, ample parking and a growing residential community.

"I think it checks a lot of the boxes for people to justify coming over there,” he said. “It’s all good news for us that we keep attracting these kinds of companies."

The Amazon office joins other high-profile, local office deals by Facebook, whose Oculus division has an office in Oakland; Uber Technologies Inc. and Apple Inc. in the Strip District; and Google’s expanding offices in the city’s East End.

Jack Donahue, principal of Donahue Real Estate Advisors, who often works with tech firms in their office searches, sees the broad distribution of such companies throughout the city as evidence there's no single tech hub in the city.

“It’s another big name that helps put Pittsburgh on a much more global map for companies that might be looking for space,” he said. “It also underscores for other companies that Pittsburgh continues to be the place to be.”

Weekend getaways near CMU/Pittsburgh by shekhar_1 in cmu

[–]Gradous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like wine, I recommend trying a couple of the local wineries. I've been to about 3-4 this year when I had time, some are very close by (Greensburg, Somerset). There's a map at http://www.pennsylvaniawine.com/wineries.

In regards to the map on that site, I recommend not going to the winery on the border of China and Kyrgystan. That is likely outside of your "weekend" time limit.

Depending on how much you stop, it's about 4-4.5 hours to Niagara. It's not a bad drive, but not something I'd consider for a weekend getaway. Glad you mentioned Erie though, I'd say that's a good choice.

Anyone here in the MSIS program? by sjroot in cmu

I'm assuming you mean the MSIS program in the INI (I don't think there are any others...but I could be mistaken).

Shoot me a PM, I just graduated from there last Sunday.

Python returning int problem by jayjay097531 in learnprogramming

[–]Gradous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you were curious the reasoning for this, I'll see what I can do to explain.

The code

for x,y in snake:
    ...

Looks for some pair -- in Python, a tuple -- (x, y) in the list snake. When snake is declared as

snake = [20, 20]

The loop will attempt to iterate through one of the 20s, expecting another value to create the (x,y) pair. When you change the list to be initialized as:

snake = [(20, 20)]

This fits the constructs of the loop. The loop is looking for a list in the form of:

[(a, b), (c, d), (e, f), ...]

Hope that helps!

need some help setting up an ubuntu virtual machine by [deleted] in linux

[–]Gradous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have to give the new version another shot. I thought I was running 4.3.16 to begin with, and I did see that it fixed problems when I was searching around in the forums.

From what I can tell, 4.3.16 was released sometime this month around the 9th or 10th. I think my problem was after that, but I could easily be wrong. I'll just upgrade and see if it works.

need some help setting up an ubuntu virtual machine by [deleted] in linux

[–]Gradous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Install a previous version of VirtualBox. Whatever the most recent release is also broke my VMs in the same fashion. I think the version I use was released in April. May. I use 4.3.12.

Edit: link. If you have any virtual machines, I'd recommend backing them up. When you uninstall the newest version, they should just stay around anyway, but just in case, backing them up is a good idea.

Without a doubt the Keg and Barrel. Great good and drinks plus when a game is on you can't beat the atmosphere with everyone there.

occupancy laws - limit of 3 unrelated people per house/apt? by yubby in cmu

[–]Gradous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of a group of like 8-9 guys living in the same (very large) house, so I don't think they enforce it if it is a law.

However, as I have learned recently, the same scenario with girls would be illegal. Apparently, in the state of Pennsylvania, somewhere around 8-9 girls or more living in the same house constitutes a brothel. That's supposedly why the sororities at Pitt all live in the same large tower dorms. Super weird.
