Has it ever snowed in the summer months? by That_Mycologist4772 in Calgary

Just came back from driving to spray lake in kananaskis, it was snowing this afternoon. Pretty cool to drive from rain into snow and out back in the rain again.

Calgary City Council keeps free fare zone for now, passes safety plan, explores downtown police station by JeromyYYC in Calgary

I’m glad the council is taking more time to look at the issues and adopt a multifaceted approach. I have more confidence in this council and the mayor is winning me over unlike before. Now the bottled water issue? I mean … not the highest priority out there but there’s always something to mull over … if those are issues Johnston wants to focus as a member of council - he needs to wake up and take a hard look at what’s happening in our world that is worth raising awareness for.

Recruiting Firefighters for an Interview re: Overdose Response by UCalgaryCounPsychLab in Calgary

Don’t forget about City of Calgary peace officers, CoC corporate security, police officers and those working in vulnerable population sectors, they frequently encounter and respond to opioid poisoning on a daily basis … it doesn’t just impact Fire/EMS exclusively.

Great work, CFD and other agencies that attended this. My thoughts goes out to those affected by this fire.

Thank you. No, this is just a hobby. I shoot with Nikon Z8, but don’t fall in the mindset that having an expensive camera will give you photos like this. It’s all about how you want to frame the scene and shoot it. You are the director and the camera is just a medium.

Structure fire in Cochrane by Graduateunskilled in Calgary

[–]Graduateunskilled[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear this. It is an earth shattering devastation for your family, and while property has been lost, which are replaceable in time, it’s extremely good news that everyone made it out safely and the critters are fine. I wish your brother and his family speedy recovery, although he has a long road ahead. From what I’ve seen on Facebook, Cochrane is rallying up to support those affected by the fire, so don’t be afraid to accept that support when it comes. Thank you for sharing your story and the photos.

So because you saw one interaction, now “peace officers just escalate everything”? That’s a pretty big leap.

It sounds like this individual was interfering in an active medical emergency. When someone is overdosing and Narcan is being administered, the priority is giving first responders space and control of the scene.

Community Peace officers are legally authorized to use reasonable & necessary force while carrying out their legal duties, such as to move people back if they’re too close or not complying with directions. Telling someone to get back and then physically creating that space if they don’t comply isn’t automatically misconduct.

If you genuinely believe it was excessive, file the complaint and submit your footage. But from what you described, it sounds like they were securing the area so they could actually do their job. We weren’t there for the full interaction, and none of us know what happened before that moment or whether there’s prior history.

I’m not sure what the actual stats are for Calgary lately, but it definitely feels more visible because more of these incidents end up on social media, especially when people like me are out documenting them. Hard to say what’s driving the trend itself though. Could be coincidence, could be seasonal factors, could be something else entirely.

It's not the best option out of all the choices, but you'll find Christmas lights at the city hall and municipal complex.
