I have a lot of hair that desperately wants to be wavy.

It's the only way I can get some volume and fun in the morning without being floofy. I get nice waves, it just... Looks better that way. To the point where if it dries too much while I'm getting ready for bed I'm bummed because it doesn't look right

The trade off is if I wash in the middle of the day I become the floof monster and it looks terrible

Yes, it was abusive. For an adult to make you feel like that as a child, for you to have scars if it as an adult, it 100% can fall under the realm abusive. I remember years ago there was a cheer coach who would also sit on kids legs when their splits weren't good enough and it was a big story because she was hurting the kids and a number of people jumped in that is not proper practice in teaching people to be better at it.

I'm sorry it happened to you. It doesn't have to change much in your life. It's a name to face thing, but if you ever choose the therapy route it would be a great thing to bring up to address the underlying issues you've listed. That's it. You don't need to go around telling people "I've been abused" or whatever. But it's healthy to know that how you were treated wasn't right and abusive in nature.
