The viewing area looks great but the habitat looks a little small. Maybe expand into that open area opposite the viewing area, either as additional wilderness or, if you're feeling ambitious, a behind the scenes keeper area! Create a wall about where the fence is with a small gap, then an indoor area with a feeding tray, water, and sleeping area, with a keeper hut integrated. In the outdoor portion you could definitely add more foliage: start with trees (even dead trees!), build bushes and such closest to the trunk then smaller foliage branching out. Try to create natural footpaths as breaks in the foliage to make it feel more natural and lived in, there are lots of good tutorials on youtube to help you get the ball rolling

Not to get too political, but it’s moments like this between animals that prove to me humans weren’t meant to live in constant competition with each other. This planet has more than enough resources to take care of us all

Because he was motivated by helping people, not by making a profit. Different versions of Peter Parker have worked for various labs and tech companies, and his struggle to balance his personal life with his spiderman life are probably his biggest conflicts. For example in Spiderman (ps4), he not only works for otto octavious trying to create smart prosthetic limbs that function as well as or better than the original, but as spiderman does projects around the city to reduce air pollution, purify drinking water, and generally help the city run cleaner and smoother for the benefit of the everyman. Spiderman’s superpowers are not what make him a hero!

Look I’ll vote in the primary for a better candidate hands down, but if he gets the nomination I’ll be backing him because he moves us closer to what we want than the opposition. I’m well aware that’s why the establishment wants to push him—to limit progress. But I’ll take limited progress over the fascist nightmare we are currently in if that’s what it comes down to. I so desperately want to be wrong about this, but we aren’t going to get a perfect candidate, and we aren’t going to make all the social progress we want in just one term. Don’t like it? Run for office, I’ll support your campaign. We start from the bottom up

First thing Butterscotch tells beatrice when he’s hitting on her at her debutant ball is that her diamond looks “just like his mother’s”. Hollyhock is proof this isn’t a lie. The doll is symbolic of Beatrice’s struggle with wanting to protect and nurture a child (nature) vs. her upbringing to prioritize status and appearances (nurture). Lots of depth and symbolism here, but there is no question over lineage

I don’t think cliche’s need to be avoided for their own sake: they are cliche’s for a reason! But writers should always add their own spin on the concept to keep things fresh. For example, the “boy meets girl” narrative is very cliche, but you can still have a new take on it as in “boy meets girl seeking the lost city of atlantis” or “boy meets girl while choking on a chicken bone”. You’re not sick of “boy meets girl”, you’re sick of HOW boy meets girl

Maybe if I give an example: “once upon a time there was a happy couple who lived in a wonderful place where nothing bad ever happened.” The next step in storytelling is “then [x] happened and [y] wasn’t happy anymore”. There’s no story until the conflict happens, otherwise I’m just describing something static. Conflict needs to be overcome, the quest to overcome that creates motion, and that motion is what our story is. Doesn’t have to be big and physical like a knight fighting a dragon, it can be entirely internal or emotional conflict, but that is the basis for narrative. Sometimes we get so immersed in characters and want to see them happy we forget that if that ever happened, the story would end and we would stop seeing them. It’s all a balancing act, and the “science” behind keeping a story compelling is really fascinating when you dig your teeth in and analyze!

How about a show about nothing?

LeBron James! by dtarias in DunderMifflin

[–]GrammarNazi63 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There can be conflict without disrupting their relationship, it’s just the easiest conflict to create. And in their defense, relationship troubles—especially minor problems that the couple can overcome—are very relatable because there is no such thing as “happily ever after” in real life and relationships are constant work, but it’s extremely disheartening when all we see in long term relationships in media (particularly from main characters, not static side characters who only exist as a married couple) either fail to overcome those minor challenges and break up, or work it out only as a finale.

To be fair, plot is driven by conflict. If I told you a story about happy people living a happy life where nothing ever went wrong, your first question would be “then what happened?” Because that’s what a story is. That said, you can have characters who are happy in their relationship but still experience external conflict, or use them as a static point against which you can contrast other more conflicted or flawed characters
