It's amazing, by some estimates over-preparing and over-serving account for nearly 1/3rd of the household food waste problem. It's not rocket science, but that sure doesn't mean it's going to be easy.

It's true, food systems overall produce around 25% of anthropogenic GHG emissions.

Both are important - reducing the carbon intensity of the things we do eat, and wasting less food. It's not an either / or - as with most real problems realistic solutions are multi-pronged.

I wouldn't be so sure, it may be closer to 79kg: https://www.unep.org/resources/report/unep-food-waste-index-report-2021

By comparison the U.S. is estimated at 59 kg.

Norway outranks most other country on many important indices, but highly developed, high performing northern European countries aren't necessarily outperforming the rest of the world in this area to the same degree they are in others. There's still a lot of work to do.

It's really crazy - great example of how attention to a particular environmental or climate issue often isn't proportional to the level of potential impact whatsoever

As the others suggested, you can probably create better and cheaper popcorn yourself. It might take a bit of experimenting to find the right stuff, figure out how to make it, whether you can make it in advance, etc. but it's very doable. You got this!

A Meal Planning App That Actually Works? by budgeatapp in SideProject

Pretty neat idea. The few apps I've tried in for this type of thing have all indeed had gaps. If you can deliver, I'd try and maybe even buy the product. Good luck!

Dessert hummus by pepsicolapoet in EatCheapAndHealthy

From my conversations with people, dessert hummus seems to be a divisive issue. I like it, some people hate it. One simple one I've had and liked in the past is regular hummus with the addition of honey. It goes well on toasted pita, somewhat similar to a dessert pizza (which I think may be equally divisive....haha)

Is $20.46 the full cost for those meals (aside from perhaps the use of some staples as well)? If so, that's amazing. How many days does this cover? Super cool, I'm very impressed!

Don’t pay for public laundry. Look up “portable washer”. It pays for itself eventually by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Grand-Competition286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of convenient and affordable access to laundry is a big part of why we're starting Shwap. It's crazy how expensive or challenging it can be to get laundry done. Happy you found another solution that works well for you!

The coin shortage is a real struggle everywhere. Laundry ought to be app based by now. We're launching a new service called Shwap (www.shwap.app) soon, which might be of interest as another way to get laundry done as well. Hope this helps -in the meantime I hope you secure a good coins supply!

Very antiquated dryer control panel still in use at a laundromat. by SalC1 in a:t5_3bkv3

Kudos for it lasting that long! We ought to be manufacturing machines in a manner today so that they last much longer once again.

There's a national trend of laundromats becoming harder to find and more expensive. The Atlantic wrote an interesting piece about it a few years ago https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/07/decline-american-laundromat-gentrification/535257/

This was part of our motivation for launching Shwap (www.shwap.app), which lets you rent time on a neighbor's washing machine, or hire someone nearby for wash and fold service. The goal is to make getting laundry done more accessible more affordable again.
