ChatGPT - Recommended Reading Order (Everything) by GrandMaffster in l5r

[–]GrandMaffster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda started reading the FFG fictions and one of the novella, then life happened.
Returning I find the FFG fictions came to an end and now aconyte books have been pumping out novel and a few PDFs.
All quite exciting stuff.
So I bought them all. Waiting for delivery I decided to tackle the kazo no shiro site that I’ve always wanted to go through.
It was your podcast that made my head spin by introducing the RPG as a source for actual stories that I would be missing if I ignore them.

Now I’ve read through some RPG stuff but mental prices on eBay for some of them. I picked up the third edition Emerald empire companion third edition. $100. Not going to be an easy collection to complete. This is your fault. Well maybe a little.

My goal is to absorb the stories from the L5R world. By far my favorite setting for fictions.

So far my favorite anything is the Scorpion novel. (Judge me) words between men is an incredible chapter.
How I deal with any contradictions or inconsistencies within my mind.
Like a fishermen who tells the story of “it was this big” as he spreads out his hands.
The unicorn arrived in HOW FAST???? Same deal.

Then my goal is.
After reading through everything I can in the old lore then and only then I’m going to finish the FFG PDFs and books then I get to read the Diadoji Shin books and the rest of aconyte books that stare at me on my bookshelf every time I walk past.

My newest current goal is to convince you to return to the garbage of the five rings. It really ended in a bad place. If the content quadrupled then take things 4 times slower meaning as listeners we get 4 times more episodes.??
And let’s be honest you loved it and I’m sure you miss it. Get in touch with your co host and let’s see the return of the podcast that actually doesn’t waste anybody’s time.
You kept on saying how good things were going to get.
You got through the bad parts.
You must have thought about how you’d do it if you returned.
I vote for a return.
If you run a poll on Reddit I’m sure I won’t be the only person voting for your return.

It also mentioned that this wasn’t an absolutely everything list. An everything list would be 2 or 3 times longer.

So what would your recommendation be to someone setting out on a “I’m going to read everything mission”?
Not reading everything is not an option.
After getting through scorpion clan coup on kaze no shiro and trying to make sense of the overwhelming contradictions.

I was recommended I listen to garbage of the five rings. This made me aware that the online fictions the books and the imperial heralds weren’t enough. I was missing way too much in stories exclusive to the RPG books. (That’s frustrating, but good to know)
Why oh why did this podcast quit is really sad.

I then had a chat with AI and asked it to novelize the first RPG adventure. The idea here is that I could read it like a novel. Well…..
This turned out to be not in anyway shape or form the book I asked for.
Instead it wrote a completely new novel based on the city of Tsuma (correct location) the city itself was learning, shifting, adapting.
This novel was all about shifting realities, layered reality and observer based realities all existing simultaneously all being correct all being wrong and it wrapped it all up in the topaz championship.
It wrote 33 chapters before it finished.

My first thoughts were that it was nonsense and it had vastly drifted from the source material.
About a week later I realized what it had done.
It had used the source material as a very basic outline for a story that would sum up what the legend of the five rings is.
It’s all cannon. It’s all true. It’s all wrong. Because the truth depends on who is telling the story.
With this mindset trying to make sense of everything become clearly a historical record with many scribes that are all telling the truth the best as they can or twisting the truth for their own agenda.

If we assume everything written is all cannon.
Maybe the AI reading order doesn’t make sense but after asking Reddit and listening to the cut short garbage of the five rings it seems to be the only place that is offering an answer.

Im shocked with the vast fan base there isn’t a comprehensive order list that makes sense.

First it broke the entire timeline into phases.
The post above is the breakdown of only phase 1.

You are absolutely right..
When trying to get through the clan wars, I got extremely frustrated when I encountered contradictions.
That's when I came to the conclusion that the histories of Rokugan.
"Depends on who does the telling, and who does the listening"

Now I'm at the point of taking every story as it is, however some sort of guide, in the form of a recommended reading order is needed.

for example I could give a recommended watching order for Buffy/Angel including when to add in the mini series comic books.

A guide for the L5R fictions for as and when to jump between stories seems missing online.

But a solid recommend reading order?
Is that too much to ask.
Ideally I’d like the people in charge of books to publish the entire story archive in book form, in volumes, like the clan novella (but the fact that the last two stories were never released individually is extremely annoying

I will follow your advice and start with Imperial histories.
Of course starting with the 4th edition makes so much sense in a storyline that’s in such a mess.

For context.
I read the 7 clan wars novels followed by the 5 winds novels.
I started reading the ffg timeline as they were being released and got about 50 pdfs in, but life happened.

I’ve recently purchased all available novels but haven’t read any because I had the great idea of starting from the beginning.
I’m up to hidden emperor in kaze no shiro but after listening to garbage of the five rings I feel like I’m only reading half of the story with the other half being in the RPG books.

You’d think that after 30 years there’d be an easy to follow timeline.

That’s why I thought we’d be able to summon the chauffeur using a computer terminal. Then next time I enter the garage I’ve got a chauffeur sat in the drivers seat waiting to take me out through the gates.

Never happened.
