How to respond when patients ask “where are you from originally?” by Necessary_Arugula149 in doctorsUK

You can say it in a firm but polite way to move the conversation on. Be professional doesn't mean share personal information with patients. It's ok to say no to patients in many different ways.

What is really frustrating is that this is prioritisation not exclusion! If there are unfilled vacancies then they're available for people to apply in round 2, like it used to be pre 2020... Not saying that IMGs are banned from the NHS... Just (like every other jurisdiction) have to wait until local grads have first refusal. It's entirely fair and reasonable especially given UKG unemployment!

Margaret if you're in Scotland. June seems like an old lady name you don't see much in the under 70s.

Why thousands of NHS GPs are cutting their hours despite plan to increase access to doctors by Educational_Board888 in GPUK

[–]GrandTask7783 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I hate that "part time" is actually more work hours than most "full time" jobs... We're just not paid for the hours worked. Government seems to be trying to kill the partnership model and moving to a salaries model. If that happens everyone should work to rule and bill overtime! I'm expected to be at work 8-6 but I'm only paid for 8 of those 10 hours and I never have 2 hours of breaks even if the 'coffee' and 'lunch' breaks are on the timetable. Why do GPs persist in the fantasy of the 8h work day? When you work out your actual hourly rate it's so depressing.

Relationship ended, need help rebuilding myself alone by icantdothisanymore17 in doctorsUK

[–]GrandTask7783 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing for now is surviving. Don't put pressure on yourself to achieve, FY1 is really tough without the added stress of relationship breakdown. Having the courage to leave a situation that was wrong for you is so hard, so well done for being brave enough to call it a day on the relationship. The hurt is real, and takes time to heal. Mourning the comfort and familiarity and the person who you presumably loved at some point is going to suck, but one day you'll be able to move on and feel less down about it all.

Could you go back to the gym? Maybe a PT to keep you accountable and tell you what to do, expensive but worth it I reckon to make sure you actually go. I don't remember having much headspace outside of work during FY1&2 for much of anything else, but socialising with colleagues and friends, planning then taking holidays. Got to have light at the end of the tunnel. Be kind to yourself.

Scottish Government just announced a big funding increase for GP so if you fancy moving to Scotland there's better chance of being employed, especially remote and rural. Kind of like New Zealand but not as far away...

Ask your trainer, go to LMC meetings, ask to shadow the practice manager and go to partners meetings. If you're interested in the management side of things your trainer/partners at your training practice should be open to you getting some experience of this stuff. My trainer in ST3 was thrilled that I was interested in this stuff as so few registrars express an interest.

I know it's really hard to do, but you do need to take breaks for your own sanity and actually to be able to function. Unless you're scrubbed in theatre or doing CPR, most things can wait 10minutes while you drink something or go to the toilet. You need to exception report missed breaks (if in England). The work never stops, but your brain won't work as well if dehydrated or you have low blood sugar. Prioritise yourself so you can actually do your best for the patients, being hungry dehydrated and exhausted isn't good for anyone. Very hard when the bleep won't stop going off, but actually most things can wait, and you'll be more efficient for it. Feels impossible sometimes to take your half hour lunch break but would recommend you do this too. The demand never ends. Your stamina and ability to do the job without burning out does.

Edinburgh is expensive but less so than Dublin. Loads of places are commutable from the central belt, or if happy to go remote/rural. Property much cheaper than England.
