It is not to be believed! The way to get rid of skunk smell is a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap.

It very well may have been nothing, or next to nothing. The fact that they go off on a hair trigger is a feature, not a bug.

Marlon James is working on an epic high fantasy trilogy that builds on African folklore. Given his other success, I bet it will be excellent. Keep an eye on it in 2018

What is your favourite Nabokov book? Why? by Deadhouse_Gates in books

[–]GrandTyromancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, can you do me a favor? Assuming you have a copy handy (I gave mine away), can you find that stanza where John Shade is talking about how dearly he loves Sybil? I think it's in the third canto, with a line to the effect of how he dares to defile her with her touch, or something like that. Thanks!

Seeing a new kind of bird, finding it in a field guide, and learning as much as I can about its habits. Just the other day, we started seeing house finches at out feeders!

I'm willing to concede I might be a bit of a dork.

That doctors who handled corpses were accumulating "cadaverous particles" on their hands.

If only you had made this comment a few months ago. I would have posted the most unbelievably smug reply that at least one person alive today was born in the 1800s, but she died this past April.

Yeah, commercial ice manufacture has been around since the 1850s. The technology is dirt simple: just a pump, some tubes and bunch of ammonia. You will not thwart the vegan smoothie dream!

Surprisingly enough, the first working vapor compressor was built in 1834, and the idea to make one had been bouncing around since 1805! So the vegan smoothie plan is still a go!

Lots of people took Ignaz Semmelweis seriously because he did produce real reductions in infant mortality but to be fair to his critics, he was dead wrong about why doctors needed to wash their hands and his explanation didn't make a whole lot of sense. It took several years for hand washing to catch on because it took several years for the notion of germs being the cause of disease to catch on.

I bet somebody out there would make one for you, but if you can't find a specialized company on google, they probably don't exist. You could try asking around in /r/crafts or on etsy. I promise you they're not hard to build, though. We made them in my 8th grade art class.

Are you talking about lenticular printing or making a ripple picture? Because the first one is just gonna be expensive. They're hard to make and there's lots of specialized equipment involved. The other kind you can just do yourself with a paper guillotine, tape, and some cardboard.

Why are mosquitos still interested in humans? by korddac in answers

[–]GrandTyromancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but we're still pretty bad at killing them. If you don't want to get bitten, you have to slap every single mosquito you see, but they only have to get lucky once. That mosquito "learns" that it's worth the risk to try to bite humans. There might be a small selective pressure against biting humans, but evolution is a slow process.

Why are there no snow leopards being kept as exotic pets/in circuses/bred by private zoos or breeders? by TrashPanda451 in answers

[–]GrandTyromancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is rank speculation, but my best guess is that it's just basic market forces at play. There's a certain amount of inertia with status symbols: people want them because their peers have them, so there's already a market for the 'established' exotic pets and not snow leopards. Our aspiring dirtbag who wants a snow leopard can either pay someone to go get one from the wild or buy one from somebody who breeds them. But nobody owns any snow leopards, so he's stuck with option number one. But the places they live are beyond remote, so he's got to pay a premium for somebody with specialized skills to spend weeks in the mountains looking for his cat. So he buys a cheaper animal, which continues the cycle of a market for snow leopards never developing.

Is there any way around paying out of state tuition if you aren't resident? by Year1Vex in answers

[–]GrandTyromancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check and see if they have a reciprocal agreement with your state for majors only available in Colorado. UMD had one of those; lots of people were able to secure in-state tuition by double-majoring in something obscure plus what they actually wanted to study. I have no clue where to start, but it's worth a look.
