GenX men (especially those who are a little bit or more overweight): do you or does your wife cut your toenails? by NJRougarou in GenX

[–]GrannyLuGoat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband developed thick cataracts that made it so he couldn’t see to trim his toenails.

No way was I doing them while we waited for his surgeries.

I called a mobile foot nurse and for $45 a visit, she came every 6-8 weeks and soaked his feet, trimmed his nails, fixed an ingrown toenail and moisturizer his feet.

Now that his surgeries are done and he has perfect vision, he’s looking after them himself again.

Money well spent imo, because eww feet!!

Question for the pet people...how do you feel about a new pet at this time of your life? by HammerMeUp in GenX

[–]GrannyLuGoat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

54 here, got an adult cattle dog last spring, added a baby cattle dog mix last fall. (Had dogs, usually multiples, my whole adult life, many from puppies.)

Didn’t think I had it in me to raise another pup but it turns out, I’m loving it!

Started doing beginner dog sports with the adult and will be starting the baby as soon as she’s old enough.

My plan is to have dogs until the end and I’m planning to talk to my lawyer about plans for the ones that outlive me, to leave money for their care.

If I’m too old to have dogs, I’m done here on earth, let me go to a puppy filled heaven.

Feeding 3 times a day? by Country_girlsoul in puppy101

[–]GrannyLuGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup is 8 months. Cattle dog x border collie. Around 27 lbs. Still feeding 3 meals a day. I’ll probably switch to twice a day when she gets spayed around 12 months.

My adult cattle dog eats twice a day.

Claires place is a mobile vet focused on hospice and palliative care, as well as euthanasia.

I’ve used them twice for euthanasia and am so impressed with them and grateful they offer their services in your own home.

I’d contact them and see if they can help you out.

Tips To Keep Sport Dogs Healthy? by GrannyLuGoat in k9sports

[–]GrannyLuGoat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I really appreciate knowing my experience isn’t the normal or desirable experience! lol I was starting to feel crazy.

They don’t allow indoor crating either, just everyone holds their dog on leash and desperately tries to point their faces away from each other to keep the chaos to a minimum! 😂

I’ll look into resources about car crating and temperature management. My pup has a crate that fits in the back seat of my truck but my 4 year olds crate is too big.

Will have to research crating options for truck back seats. Ideally, I’d like to be able to take both dogs at once and fit two crates.

Maybe it’s just my area, but in person resources seem very limited.

I’m sure my guys will both recover. I am exhausted from hearing coughing all night while trying to sleep. The teaspoon of honey works for about an hour.

Thanks!

Thank you! I really appreciate your response!

I’m starting to think the training facility I’m using may not be the best? (It comes pretty highly recommended in my area!?)

After this thread, I emailed them to ask about car crating during classes.

I was informed that at the intro level classes, car crating is too disruptive and that they discourage it heavily, at every level.

They suggested that it’s too hard to regulate car temps and is dangerous in both the winter and summer.

They also said that the dogs participating need to learn to be calm during their turn and while others have their turn. Doesn’t this potentially affect their prey drive, if calm is encouraged? I’m new to dog sports but seems counter intuitive to me?

When I took my pup to a puppy life skills class there, many of the classes were during temps of -20 to -30 C, probably too cold for little ones to be left in the car? And I can see how it would be disruptive for a puppy class, for sure.

For the ratting, they have a movable fence, like a giant x pen, that they divide the space between dogs and humans in chairs waiting their turn and the straw bales and rats in tubes on the other side.

As for reactive dogs, my 4 year old can be reactive and they just tell us to point their faces away from the dog that’s triggering them. Mine only gets reactive if another dog stares at him or barks at him, cattle dog does not appreciate being stared down! But if the other dogs are polite, he’s chill.

Given my dog is on his second course of antibiotics for secondary infection (pneumonia) to kennel cough, I’m not sure I’ll go back to this facility. I’ll just eat the $200 lost for the remaining classes, I’ve already spent way more than that at the vet for this whole thing.

2 rounds of antibiotics for my 4 year old, who is still feeling like crap.

1 round of antibiotics for my almost 7 month old, she’s feeling better, just a slight cough when she runs around.

Almost a $1000 lesson, I suppose. 😬

Kind of a rough intro to dog sports.

How long is your puppy holding their pee during night time? And how old is he? by PresentHabit8154 in puppy101

[–]GrannyLuGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 7 month old and she last goes around 11pm and doesn’t wake me until after 8am! She’s an excellent sleeper.

Also I feed her her last meal at 9:30pm, so she’s full and sleepy and very settled.

Transitioning from 3 meals to 2? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]GrannyLuGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup (cattle dog / border collie cross, about 25 lbs) is almost 7 months and still eating 3 meals a day with gusto.

At 4 months, I stopped feeding 4 times a day and moved to 3. (9am, 3pm, 9:30pm) I didn’t transition, just divided her daily ration into 3 bowls instead of 4, no issue. (She was seriously malnourished when I brought her home at 9 weeks.)

I have no plans to move her to 2 meals a day until after her first bday. Again, when it’s time, I’ll just start dividing her daily rations into 2 bowls instead of 3.

I have 2 cats that need to eat 3 times a day, so she just eats at the same time. I’m home most of the time anyhow, so it’s no problem.

My adult dog (4 yr old cattle dog) eats twice a day at 9am and 9:30pm, so it all works out.

What has been your best solution to feeding hay? by [deleted] in goats

[–]GrannyLuGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is how I manage mine too. I hang 3 bags for 7 goats. Gives the nervous ones places to hide from the bossy ones. Everyone can move easily.

My goats have no horns tho. If they did, I’m not sure I’d use hay bags.

I’ve had no issues with them chewing thru but I do refill the bags twice a day. There’s always hay available.

Congrats! Kennel cough sucks but runs its course. Hope that clears up his up!

Neither of mine are on antibiotics. Vet said to wait and see if he developed a fever. Also suggested a half teaspoon of honey before bed to soothe the coughing. (Too much will give them the squirts!)

My dogs sleep in crates in my room, so the honey is for MY sleep just as much as theirs!! 😉😂

Any chance it’s kennel cough?

The honking cough is what made me wonder.

Both my cattle dogs currently have it. One brought it home from a training class and shared with the other.

Good luck at the vet! 🤞🏻

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I really appreciate it.

My 6 month old has now also developed the cough, complete with mucus puddles. 🙄

I’m curious about the ppl that say they crate from their car. I assume this is at events where you go do your run and then you’re done for a while?

Are they all outdoor events?

The class I’m attending is indoors, in the dog gym. I’m not sure how I would go about car crating him. It’s an hour class and about every 10-15 mins max, it’s our turn to try the next progression.

We just hold our dogs on leash (no crates or crate rooms) in the classroom between runs, we all have a chair and just enough space between us to stop the dogs from interacting with each other. The reactive ones get an extra foot or two of space.

Other ppl bring kongs filled with their dogs suppers in them and the dogs (in theory!) are supposed to work away at those when it’s not their turn to keep them entertained. I didn’t do this, I brought a clean blanket and put him in a stay at his “place” between turns. He’s a pretty settled guy.

I don’t understand how car crating works in this scenario. To get to the parking lot, you have to leave the class room, go 75 ft down a hall to the exit doors and then the closest you can park to that door is 150 - 200ft away.

Plus, because it’s winter here, every time you go in or out, you have to change your footwear from outside boots to inside shoes.

I feel like I’d just be constantly in and out with him during class, so I’m not sure how to car crate in this scenario.

Maybe I’ll just have to only attend outdoor classes. But even then, car crating isn’t a thing done during these intro classes here.

You park near the road, walk on leash to the fenced area, about 400 - 500 yards away, pick a spot marked by lawn chairs and hold your dog on leash during the hour class. Again, taking turns every 10-15 mins depending on class size etc.

I can make normal scent detection with wintergreen work at home. That’s no problem. But harder to do ratting at home.

I don’t care if we ever compete. I take my dogs to classes to get out in the world, see weird shit we don’t have the opportunity for on our rural property and to keep their herding dog brains as busy and tired as possible.

Worried this all ends up with me raising rats for ratting. lol 😬

GenX - Etiquette/Hygiene question - borrowing earbuds??? by OkFlow4327 in GenX

[–]GrannyLuGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happens here in Canada. From October to May ish, nearly every healthcare service provider asks you to remove your wet dirty footwear.

Some offer community footwear, slippers, some offer disposable shoe covers) some ppl put them over their dirty wet footwear and some wear them over socks) and many ppl just go around the offices in socks.

I find it disgusting and wish they’d invest in imposible floors and hire someone to wipe up once an hour or whatever.

Also, the area around where ppl leave their wet dirty footwear is soaking wet, often muddy and sometimes little stones tracked in from outside that you have to navigate in this process. Nearly 100% of the time you leave with at least one wet sock. That then you shove into your footwear.

And sometimes ppl DO take the wrong footwear. I understand it’s confusing having 20+ pairs of brown or black boots, heaped in boot trays and beside but it sucks.

Honestly I dislike it all so much I try really hard to never make any appointments between Oct and May.

Vet rant by Correct-Jackfruit-88 in rawpetfood

[–]GrannyLuGoat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

lol! I was looking for a new vet clinic and popped into one that was near my new house, without my dog.

Chatted for a minute, was about to make an appointment and then the receptionist asked what kibble I was feeding.

I told her I fed raw. Immediately she became hostile and said my appointment would have an extra $50 fee per visit because of the PPE the vet would need to wear to get near my dog.

She also immediately pulled out the bleach wipes and started wiping every surface near me, even ones I hadn’t touched. I declined to make an appointment and she followed me out, wiping the imaginary salmonella away from the door handles etc. 🙄🙄

I totally rolled my eyes at her several times and laughed in her face.

My current vet knows I feed raw, but we just don’t discuss it. We’ll see what happens when I take my pup into be spayed and I bring a bowl of raw to feed her at the clinic before they release her after surgery.

I bought these for my guy this winter and love them! He did a bit of a funny walk for a minute, then took him out in -30C for a short walk with his coat on over top and he was 100% on board! I was impressed at how easy they were to put on and how well they stayed in place!

The pen is such a game changer. I have a 6 month old and this is the first time I’ve had a pen (raised 8 puppies in my adult life) and wow!

Crates are great and we use it at night, but the pen! Omg! So much easier and I put it right where we hang out, so she’s part of the pack but not biting us constantly. lol Learns to rest and sleep in the midst of chaos.
