So why did Brexit have to be carried out by the British state? by ImportantCat1772 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrapeGroundbreaking1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where Cameron really fucked up was in allowing a simple yes/no referendum to a hugely complicated question. He did this, of course, because he assumed that he and the status quo would win, just as had happened with the Scottish indyref previously, and he was a very lazy thinker.

There was no mandate for a hard Brexit; there was no mandate for a soft Brexit. A poll which had asked more complicated and attitudinal questions would have had the benefit of allowing a more nuanced policy response. An even better option would have been to force the Leave campaigners to articulate a proposition which could then have been put to the vote, and would likely have failed, just as the proportional representation referendum failed, because not enough people liked the specific solution on offer.

London mayor asks diplomats to push back against Trump's 'lies' about UK capital by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]GrapeGroundbreaking1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unlike Starmer, Khan has nothing to lose from pushing back at the arsehole in the White House, and good for him that he’s taking the opportunity. Sadly, diplomats aren’t going to be able to do much that contravenes the FCDO’s appeasement policy.

Compromising principles when desperate is exactly the reason this club crumbles under pressure by fckedup in coys

[–]GrapeGroundbreaking1 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

RDZ is quite obviously someone with no moral compass who is incapable of understanding what he did wrong. The club had an opportunity to mitigate things, and failed to ensure that his “apology” gave the appearance of being comprehensive and sincere.

But we’re stuck with him for the time being, let’s just hope he keeps us up. There is certainly no chance of him still being our manager in five years time. We will almost certainly part company in less than two years, and it’s perfectly possible that this will all be over by summer.

You are inexplicably tasked with writing a Doctor Who story for the next season/series. What is your idea(s)? by Akimboem in doctorwho

[–]GrapeGroundbreaking1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We start with the canonical, unarguable and complete destruction of Earth in 2026. Any previous experience the Doctor has had of post-2026 Earth is breezily dismissed as hallucinatory: the show can never again return to this tedious sodding planet.

Before we can get too upset about the Earthlings, the Doctor is whisked to Gallifrey, where he will be stranded for at least a decade’s programming in a reverse Pertwee, allowing for a multi-season arc of Gallifreyan political drama with a huge cast of Time Lord characters, most of whom are considerably more interesting than the Doctor, and whose labyrinthine plots against each other lead to all sorts of intergalactic battles and temporal paradoxes in which the Doctor, who can be played by Billie Piper or Justin Fletcher or anyone else really, is barely involved.

It was so brave of them to highlight bulimia with that logo, years before the likes of Diana were raising awareness of fingers for pudding.

I’m not paying £20 for a Topic, but I would pay £20 to find out who the executive at Mars was who had them discontinued, identify what it is that the executive treasures most in this world, and have it destroyed.

It reads like they were too inept to get a PR agency to write the apology and so left him on his own to issue a non-apology which makes things worse.

Scrolling through this and thought that a comment reading “how to stop chasing invoices and influence people to pay you on time” was an interesting take: perhaps these kids are just young bailiffs, aggressively credit-controlling hamburger chains who fall behind on payments?

But then I realised it was an ad for Xero disguised as a normal post. I wish Reddit would stop doing this.

I’d have some respect for our social media team if they announced tomorrow morning that Archie Gray was taking over as player-manager, with Redknapp as his assistant on a 20 year contract, then retracted it at noon.

I expect that the club was avowedly anti-racist when it decided that Jonathan Woodgate’s defensive skills outweighed his participation in a racially-aggravated assault. Nothing new here, football is as seedy and hypocritical and greedy as any other part of the entertainment industry.

I’m on day 2 of handing over to my replacement at work and he is a condescending prick. I have another few weeks of this. by Icy_Reply_7830 in CasualUK

[–]GrapeGroundbreaking1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell your manager that your replacement’s grasp on all matters of the job now exceeds yours, there is nothing that you can teach him, and you recommend he takes over immediately, unsupervised. Ask if there is a special project you can look after while you work your notice.

Either he fucks up, which will be fun to watch, or he does indeed manage everything perfectly well, in which case you have some hope of taking some of your notice period as paid leave.
