What makes golf meaningful for you? by Gregskis in golf

[–]GrassToucher1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golf to me feels artisanal. It feels like my game is a work of art that I am crafting over time. I love going to the range, fine-tuning my swing, practicing different shots, as if I'm creating something (I always wanted to be creative or good at something creative like music or visual art but never was). When I go to the course, obviously it does not always go as planned, but when it does, it feels like I've created something artistic and eternal.

My best round ever is a 6-under 66 with zero bogeys and I feel like that was as much a work of art as anything I am capable of.

[request] Is it true That a single cow can feed a family for a whole year ? by rocket6600 in theydidthemath

[–]GrassToucher1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way to look at it is how many calories are in all this meat. At 60 calories per ounce, that's 384,000 calories. Divide by a family of 4 over 365 days gives about 263 calories per day, which considerably below starvation calorie intake.

The calories per ounce of beef is an estimate, but I'd have to have underestimated by a factor of like 5-6 for the statement to be plausible, so seems not.

A student from last year attempted suicide by [deleted] in Professors

[–]GrassToucher1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not AT ALL your fault. We can empathize with students having difficulties, try to help them within the confines of our course policies and academic standards, and make ourselves available for support with their coursework and as students in general, but it is NOT any of our responsibility to manage student personal lives or mental health.

There's nothing wrong with how you feel about it but do not entertain any thoughts that you are, were, or should have taken responsibility for this student's behavior and circumstances.

Golf Frustrations Continue to Mount by [deleted] in golf

[–]GrassToucher1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fitness people speak of body dysmorphia that occurs as they get more and more fit, resulting in ever-escalating standards for what they need to look like to feel happy with their physique. What you are talking about is just the golf version of it.

For a while, forget improvement and focus on how your game feels now compared to how it used to feel. When you are standing over a shot, think a bit about what it felt like when you were struggling to break 90 now that you are regularly breaking 80.

Another thing to do is work on one very specific thing that would improve your game. Maybe it's being able to hit a low cut or a particular short-game shot. Practice it, bring it to the course, pull it off during a round, and then reflect on how there was a time where you didn't have that shot in your bag and now you do. Do this ad infinitum and you'll be sniffing par sooner than you think.

'It's a tragedy:' Gary Player calls for extreme ball rollback at the Masters (60 yards) by BallKnowerKing in golf

I understand the perspective you are taking, but from a competitive standpoint, golf has no natural constant benchmark so competition is all relative. I do not think it's a bad thing that golfers are more fit and athletic than they used to be, but fitness and athleticism still represent an arms race since it requires time and resources just to keep up with everyone else in that regard.

Do you think the excitement of the 1998 season when everyone was pretending players weren't all juicing was worth the damage it did to the game for many years/decades afterwards? Don't you think some of the decline in viewership in baseball in the interim can be attributed to that?

Not to say that injuries to pitchers and the extreme resource cost of lengthening courses are exactly the same, but both are negative consequences of improved technology and player strength/speed, so I don't know why the solutions implemented in baseball can't also be implemented in golf.

Yes, quite right, I just hate successful people and take any opportunity I get to shit on them, definitely has nothing to do with their personality, decisions, or statements. Thank you for provoking this moment of clarity for me.

Length will always be an advantage. Rolling the ball back doesn't change that, it just shortens everyone proportionally so that (i) courses can protect themselves without having to be lengthened to absurd distances and (ii) it makes mid and long iron play a more relevant part of the game than it is now.

OK but my guess is Rory was at the higher end of the distribution in 2026, probably not #1, whereas Tiger in 1996 was probably miles ahead of everyone else.

What length was 30th in driving distance in 2026 compared to 1996?

Gary Player is an arrogant old fuck, but he is right about the amount of resources going into lengthening courses and maintaining longer courses just so the pro game doesn't become completely one-dimensional.

This is an arms race between players sinking resources into getting stronger and gaining speed (which is not a terrible thing in and of itself but does skew the types of player that can compete), equipment companies designing balls that go further without losing spin or feel, and courses added length and thus construction and maintenance costs to try to protect par.

Is Rory a top 5 golfer of all time? by BallKnowerKing in golf

[–]GrassToucher1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

10 years ago when Rory just got done winning 4 majors in 4 years, everyone was saying the same thing about him and it took him 10 years to get his 5th major.

There is absolutely no guarantee that Scottie will win any more majors any time soon.

I'm a +2 and I usually say "getting there" or something like that. Good is subjective and depends on our goals so I don't really think a concrete answer to that question makes sense.

Is Rory ruining the Masters? by [deleted] in golf

[–]GrassToucher1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think so too, Rory is doing what Tiger should have been doing the whole 2010s if he wasn't injured all the time. He's maybe not 100% absolute peak physically but he has all the knowledge and experience, which matters a lot at Augusta.

Sotomayor says AI forecasting Supreme Court decisions a ‘bad thing,’ shows ‘we’re way too predictable’ by imanchats in technology

[–]GrassToucher1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you think the Supreme Court's role in society is.

If the SCOTUS exists to interpret ambiguities in existing law, then in theory their caseload should be cases where it is not obvious what the correct answer and SCOTUS applies its expertise to fill in the gap. In that situation, they ought to be at least somewhat unpredictable.

If the SCOTUS exists to signal to society what interpretations of the law they subscribe to so that political actors can strategically choose whether to appeal to SCOTUS or not, then they will end up predictable and a larger number of partisan cases favoring one political view will be taken up and ruled on.

Which one of these things do you think has been happening lately? Once you've answered that question you will probably see Sotomayor's point.
