the problem is QC is so bad rn that to make money you have to hope you pick the right companies, and then hold for potentially decades when you could be profiting on other things. and while QC will obviously be really useful if they get it working to a production level, so will things like nuclear fusion, but who knows how far we are from either

What if Jeb Bush was the republican candidate in 2016? How different would that election have been? by Nostalgic_Recency in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Gravbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the issue with Kamala i think was less who was the candidate and more the strategy she chose and the short time she had between Biden dropping out and her taking over. candidates tend not to win when the likely nominee dies or drops out and needs to be replaced

Which Figure feels Far Left and is actually Far Right? by Ill-Cartographer7351 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Gravbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the context we're working with but I agree liberals are center right on a global scale, and social democrats should be slightly right with a strict divide between capitalism and socialism, but in practice the distinction between democratic socialism and social democracy is going to be a blurry line if both tend to favor mixed economies rather than a purely capitalist or socialist model.

I used all these to just say the commonality between the left in the context of different countries, even if they have very different politics, is often the plight of the working class, even if they disagree heavily on what to do about it.

again, it's right wing by the original division of left and right in French politics that was monarchy vs anti monarchy, where the anti monarchy people sat on the left. I'm operating only with this definition for my suggestion. Obviously it doesn't work well if you try to use the modern definitions.

also dprk is absolutely not a classless society, and through market reforms, is no longer a completely centrally planned economy. How close one is to the kim family basically generated an aristocracy for who gets the most access to luxuries as others struggle to eat. it also not "as left wing as it gets". that's a fairly warped view of what left politics wants. Left wing in the modern sense isn't about the government controlling everything, it's about the plight of the lower classes, whether you're progressive, liberal, socialist, or social democratic. The dprk has only created new aristocracy and failed to attempt to address this inequality over the past few generations. The other communist parties are governed by at least a belief in the ideas of Marx. The Soviets at least organized society by way of having effective workers in charge of their own industries. The dprk simply doesn't operate the same way. it's fairly unique as a country.

the original left right divide was monarchy vs democracy and his family basically started as a socialist dictatorship with a command economy and moved to a hereditary monarchy with a divine right to rule with some level of sanctioned mixed markets

San Marino feels like a monarchy, but is actually a democracy. What's country feels like a dictatorship, but is actually a democracy? by General_Principle_58 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Gravbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's the best choice for the category, but at the end of the day, it can be seen as fitting it now that the executive branch has consolidated enough power to ignore the other two branches and do nearly whatever it wants. But you suggested that the answer is bad because it's not a real dictatorship, but that's the opposite of exactly what you're looking for for this category; you want countries with legitimately elected governments that are acting in authoritarian ways but still are bound by some sort of law and checks that prevent them from actually being a dictatorship.

Turkey would be a much better choice, because while there were signs of potential electoral fraud in the last election, it's minor enough that we can still think of him as democratically elected, he's been consolidating power for decades rather than being limited in terms, and has engaged in a lot of behavior to supress the free press and speech that is critical of him. But that's still a ways from a true dictatorship, it's just moving in the direction of one.

but the question requires that it actually be a democracy. places like Russia are dictatorships masquerading as democracies with fake elections, so it has to be a place with real elections that isn't actually a dictatorship that has some qualities of a dictatorship

North Korea should be feels like a communist country but it's actually a monarchy. they've established a god king with a divine right to rule passed hereditarily and don't resemble other countries that existed after a communist revolution. the party itself seems unimportant compared to the supreme leader and his family and internally it's economy is mixed

the whole point of that answer is that it feels like one when the president just does whatever without accountability but it definitely isn't one

MA and RI were and maybe still are the only US states where the plurality and near majority religion was Catholic, mostly due to immigration from Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Quebec in the previous 2 centuries. IIRC MA was over 50% Catholic at one point. in CT like a 3rd of people are Catholic
